  General Notes:

Famous Captain during Revolutionary War. Died of wounds received June 23, 1780 at or near Springfield, NJ.
"Capt. Nathaniel FitzRandolph was one of Woodbridge's Revolutionary War heroes, and was called "Capt. Natty" by his friends and admirers. His tombstone indicates that he was born in Woodbridge in 1747-8 and his death was caused by wounds received in the battle of Springfield on 23 June 1780. His was captain of the Middlesex Militia, then elected naval officer of the Eastern District of New Jersey on Dec. 12, 1778. The day before his election the Council ordered that a sword should be purchased for him, as a fitting tribute to his patriotism, and this was later given to him (Styker's Rosters).
On June 24, 1778 he, with fourteen men, made an attack on the enemy's guard, opposite Elizabethport. He had returned to his home, and in January, 1779 was taken from his bed by his captors and conveyed to New York and there imprisoned and cruelly treated , until 26 May, 1780, at which time he was exchanged, it is supposed, for a Captain Jones of the British Army (Stryker's Roster). p. 48
Gravestone says, "Capt. Nathaniel Fitz RANDOLPH, d. 23 Jul 1789, in 33rd year of his age. Here lies beneath this stone repofd, Patroiot merit ftraitly houfed; His Country called, he lent and Ear, Their Battles fought, and refted here. E. Price." 558,2125
