Col. 2th Regiment NGNY Capt. US Vol. in Civil War. Commissioned 2nd Lieut. 51st. Regiment NY Vols, attached to Burnside's Corps. In all engagements near Richmond, brevet captain prior to Antietam (wounded, Capt. on staff of General Potter). Wounded Jackson, Mississippi, participated in siege of Knoxville, contracted typhoid fever. Resigned from Army due to broken health. Studied law but never practiced, devoted time to looking after his estates and those of his family. Col. several years after war.
