GREEN BROOK - Robert J. Coddington, 79, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2008) at Somerset Medical center, Somerville. He was born Nov. 29, 1928 in Plainfield to Warren F. and Ada M. Westercraft (misspelled) Coddington and had resided in Green Brook most of his life.

Bob worked as a steel worker at Buffalo Tank Corp. in Dunellen for 36 years. He then worked in the maintenance department of the Green Brook schools for 10 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of Dunellen United Methodist Church. Bob was an avid golfer and was a co-founder and past president of the Green Brook Golf Association and a member of the Piscataway Senior Golf League, as well as the Jersey Players Golf Club. He, along with his son, Robert, played chess weekly at the Piscataway Chess Club. As a member of the Green Brook Fire Department, he and a brother built the first big Christmas star displayed on the mountain at Washington Rock. He had been a 21-year member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 105 F. & A.M. in Bound Brook. Bob also held the distinction of being the Little League coach with the most wins in its history. He was a 1946 graduate of North Plainfield High School.

His family includes his wife of 58 years, Helen R. Paterson Coddington; three sons, James Coddington and his wife Judy, of Bound Brook, Todd Coddington and his wife, Jennifer, of Bound Brook and Robert B. Coddington and his wife, Lisa, of Bridgewater; three grandchildren, Christopher and his fiancée, Nara, Rachel and Sarah; and a great-grandson, Robert Christopher.

A service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Dunellen United Methodist Church, 150 Dunellen Ave., Dunellen, with the Rev. Hazel T. Shue officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at The Mundy Funeral Home, 142 Dunellen Ave., Dunellen.
