  General Notes:

The parents of John 1778 are unknown. However, comparison of Y chromosoma STR (single tandem repeat) DNA of a descendant of Ellwood Clinton Coddington to several known descendants of Stockdale (1569-1649) proves that John (1778-1845) does descend from Stockdale. Regarding him as a son of Benjamin (1730-1793) is merely plausible, given dates of birth, location, etc. Others have suggested he may have been a late, unrecorded son of Joseph (1730-1806), the schoolteacher of New Paltz. But the New Paltz Dutch Reformed Church has continuous baptism records throughout the period of John's birth, and no John is mentioned.`
His son John Jr. removed to Seneca Township, Lenawee Co., Michigan by at least 1840, and another son Alva followed ca. 1880. Alvah stated that his father was born in New York State and his mother in Ireland.
A John Coddington appeared on the tax rolls of Walkill, Orange Co. New York in 1803 with real estate worth $150 and personal property worth $71, but this is probably John. On the other hand, the "John" of the record may simply have been the Jonathan Coddington c. 1774 who appears in other Walkill records. ^335,2440
