  General Notes:

The 1880 census for Centralia, Columbia Co, Pennsylvania lists four households headed by Coddingtons. Christy Coddington is the oldest, born about 1820 in Ireland. With him are his wife and two children, Mary and William, both born in Pennsylvania. William and his father Christy worked in the coal mines. Christopher Coddington, born abt 1846 in Pennsylvania, lists both his parents as born in Ireland, and heads a second household. Likewise, Henry, born about 1852 in Pennsylvania, works in the coal mines, and lists both of his parents as born in Ireland. Finally, May Coddington, born about 1845 in Ireland, heads a household with her two sons, both born in Pennsylvania.
It seems likely that all these heads of households are related. Probably Christy is the father of May, Christopher and Henry. If so, he must have emigrated in 1845-1846 with his newborn daughter May and probably pregnant wife Ann. Subsequent children were all born in Pennsylvania. The men worked in the coal mines and the women kept house.
In 1880 May was 35 and her oldest son William was 8. She probably married in about 1870-1871, but her status as head of household suggests that she was a widow or separated from her husband sometime between 1873-1880.
Note: According to a letter of John I. Coddington (IB 486(1)), the Irish Coddingtons descend from the family from Cheshire who took their surname from the town of the same name, and later moved to Ireland. ¹⁴⁴
