A 1911 article in the Evening News relates that Joel and his brother Horace were indicted for illegally obtaining monies of Warren Township while the former acted as treasurer for the town. The arrests were made after a three month investigation by Special Supreme Commissioner Hugh K. Gaston. Joel Coddington pleaded ["non vult" =nolo contendere??] to the charges and at the time of the newspaper article was awaiting sentencing. ⁸⁰⁰

The cause of her death was malignancy of sigmoid with carcinomatosis of abdomen.
