Jefferson and his older brother Edmund Randolph went to California in 1850. One of the ships was the Hannah Sprague.

Lived with first wife for four years before separating in 1858. Filed for divorce in New York and New Jersey, finally granted in Lake Co., Indiana in 1870. Coddington v. Coddington states, in part, "...said parties lived together as man and wife until July, 1858...that defendant then deserted the plaintiff and now not only refuses to return to him but said defendant refuses even to speak with him or have anything to do with him whatever...
and...
Defendant has for more than ten years been separated from her husband, that soon after the marriage of plaintiff and defendant, she found that she could not live with him in the relation of husband and wife, so utterly incompatible were they in their temperaments and tastes; to have done so would have been to the total destruction of the happiness of the defendant; she therefore abandoned the plaintiff and has ever since continued such abandonment."
