"Christian Miller located in Indiana when a young man and lived there many years. He married Mary Ann Coddington in 1832.
In 1847 they went to Huntsville, Missouri, to outfit for crossing the plains. In the spring of 1848, they started out with two wagons in a train of 40 others. The trip took four months and ten days. With him besides his wife and children were his brother ISAAC and his family. Isaac distinguished himself as an Indian fighter, serving in both Modoc Wars - 1855 and 1860. (DLC 780 Linn Co., Ore.)
Christian Miller settled on a section of land one-half mile south of Albany. In the spring of 1850 he sold his property for $500 and bought a squatter's right to another one-half section of land near Knox Butte, land now owned by his son Mart. A cow was the price paid for the squatter's right of 320 acres to Edward Streitheoff.
During his life in the west he seemed to have the happy faculty of making the best of things, and success rewarded his untiring industry and wise management. A change from farming came in the golden year of 1849 when he went to California and ran a pack train from Sacramento to the American River. Christian Miller deserved great credit for his rise in life as he was a man of little education. Not being able to sign his name, he depended on shrewdness and common sense. In later years when success came, and luxuries of life were possible, he recalled, with thankfullness for present blessings in dark days wherein privation and poverty played a large part. He died in 1874 at 65 years of age." (Oregon Pioneer Days---By Theodicia Miller Townes).
