President and treasurer of Board of Education of Summerville, NJ, at different periods (1885-1896). Sheriff of Somerset Co., NJ, 1889 to 1892 (Coddington, 1920). Wrote about the history of the Coddingtons and lived in Somerville, NJ. He and his daughters were active in the Somerville Baptist Church - a wing of the church is named after them. Also a member of the Somerset Historical Society in 1912.
Wiley (1896) relates a story by Dr. Messler from his history of Somerset Co. that Lewis Mundy Coddington was a descendant of Thomas Coddington, first Sheriff of New York City, whereas Lewis Mundy Coddington actually descends from Benjamin (1680).
Wiley (1896) states that Lewis Mundy assisted his farther in the management of the farm until he was 21. His father was elected Sheriff in 1868 and appointed his son deputy. He thereafter became deputy county clerk, and in 1881 became a clerk in the Surrogate's Office. Besides his public offices, he was mainly involved in the insurance and real estate business (Wiley, 1896). ^855,856
