  • Marriage: Marcy ALWARD on 24 Dec 1781 398
  • Died: 14 Jul 1842, New York, New York Co., New York, USA at age 83

  General Notes:

farmer worker, soldier in Revolutionary War, lived in Woodbridge until abt 1784, then removed to Perth Amboy until abt 1801, then to NYC. He was illiterate and his applications for pensions conflicted. He was, however, sure that he had been an express rider and had taken messages to and from General Washington, a draftee for 6 months in a company commanded by Capt. Matthew Freeman, a volunteer under Capts. Nathaniel and Asher FitzRandolph, and a volunteer in the whaleboat service under Capt. John Storey in the last part of the War.
On March 4 1841 deposed that he was at Valley Forge and was there chosen to act as spy behind the British lines during which operations he was often in great danger and was wounded in the face. This would also seem to be the period when he was an express rider and delivered Gen. Washington's messages. 3881
