  General Notes:

John Coddington was a weaver and soldier in the Massachusetts militia under Major Simon Willard in the War against the Confederated Indian tribes, called "King Philip's War. " He is mentioned under date of 20 Nov 1675, as entitled to £3 00 00 for service. Also mentioned on page 360, under date of 20 Dec 1675, as entitled to £1 15 00 for service). He moved about 1677-1683 from Boston to Woodbridge, NJ at which village he was constable in 1692.
The town of Woodbridge was part of the agreement between Daniel Pierce, John Carteret, John Ogden, and Luke Watson, dated Dec. 11, 1666. They obtained a deed Dec. 3, 1667, whereupon Pierce as surveyor laid out the lands to the associates. The original deed from the Indians was dated Oct. 28, 1664. The town was named after Rev. John Woodbridge of Newbury Mass. By 1672 Woodbridge contained 30,000 acres and 120 families (Clayton, 1882).
John first purchased land in Woodbridge from Jonathan Dennis and Wm. Bingley in 1683 and the records show that he extended his land holdings there in 1684 and again in 1691. His will cannot be found but the wills of his sons Benjamin and John can be seen at the Secretary of State's Office at Trenton, NJ. Described as yeoman and weaver. He is the ancestor of nearly all Coddingtons in North America.
In "The Oliver Connection" David Kendal Martin suggests that the widow Sarah Coddington, who died intestate in 1738, was the third wife of John Coddington. He reasons that the fifteen heirs who agreed among themselves how to divide her estate included four Oliver's. He therefore supposes that Sarah's maiden name was Oliver, and that the only possible Coddington husbands were John (b. 1653) or his son John (b. 1689).
Note: some have thought that this John Coddington was the son of William Coddington and Ann Brinley (see letter by Mary Gates R. Alfonte), but that ignores the overwhelming evidence documenting the lives of and connections between John of Woodbridge, John of Boston, and Stockdale of Dorking, co. Surrey. 1,117,200,273,274,275
