in Topsfield, MA. She had moved there recently after living for five years
in Duxbury, MA. Prior to that she had lived in Ardsley-On-Hudson for 28
years and before that in Dobbs Ferry for 36 years. Mrs. Cowles was born
Ethel Margaret Coddington on March 5, 1902 in Walden, NY. She graduated from
Centenary Collegiate Institute in Hackettstown, NJ, and later earned a
Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from Syracuse University. She was a member
of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Margaret married Noble Pitt Cowles on October
17, 1927. They were married 38 years and had four children. Margaretės
ability in music found expression throughout her life. As a teenager she
played piano in dance bands as well as church, and she also played for
silent pictures. During the 1940ės she was an organist and choir director at
Summerfield Methodist Church in Dobbs Ferry. Later she accompanied soloists
and groups at church, nursing homes, club events and at family gatherings.
Mrs. Cowles was a longtime member of Aldersgate Methodist Church and
belonged to the Dobbs Ferry Womenės Club for more than 50 years. She was a
talented homemaker with a keen sense of style and considerable skill at
sewing and needlework, especially in the art of hooking rugs. Margaretės
fortitude in facing lifeės challenges was an inspiration to many of her
family and friends. Mrs. Cowles was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy in 1954
and her husband Noble in 1965. She is survived by her son Donald, her
daughters Susan Snyder and Sara Walden, eight grandchildren, 11
great-grandchildren, two nieces and five nephews. Visiting Friday, February
18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. Services will
be at Aldersgate Methodist Church at 11 AM Saturday, February 19. If friends
wish, memorial gifts may be sent to Aldersgate Methodist Church or the Dobbs
