"Brothers of Ullapool" from Tanera sinks off Olderney

This article was published in the 25 November 1825 edition of the the Inverness Journal;

On the 18th ult. the Brothers of Ullapool sailed from Tanera for the fishing at Glendow, parish of Assint, and about midnight struck an island in the entrance to Loch Olderney and sunk, when four of the seven men onboard unfortunately perished, viz. John McKay, owner of the vessel, Angus McDonald, John McDonald, and Malcolm McDonald, all belonging to Ullapool.

And the following death notice was published a week later in the 2 December 1825 edition of the the same paper;

Drowned, on board the Brothers, on her passage from Ullapool to Glendow, on the 18th ult. Mr Angus Macdonald, aged 26 years, third son of Mr. John Macdonald, Customhouse, Ullapool. His premature death is deeply regretted by all who knew him, and his amiable disposition will long endear his memory to his afflicted parents and relations.

The 1825 Lochbroom Militia List (see 25militia.htm ) only notes Angus McDonald at Ullapool (# 110 in the list, occupation "Fisher", age "Under 30"). The second article above looking to be a death notice submitted to the paper by family, mentioning only Angus indicates the other two MacDonalds were not his brothers.

Likely the two other McDonalds were not listed in the Militia List as under 16 years of age, the Parish Register records the christenings of two sons at Reiff to a father John McDonald in that period that might refer to them;

The parents and family of those boys are in the 1841 census at Reiff 41-18 , Their brother in that Household, Donald MacDonald, was a gt-gt-grandfather of myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross (EMAIL: [email protected] )
