The following information and notes are based on photocoppies of a microfilm of the 1881 census, it differs in places from the 'as enumerated' transcription available on fiche at LDS Family History Centres, and I think repairs a few transcription errors made there. The first draft of this file and the introductory notes were done by Donald MacLeod in Auckland New Zealand, who has ancestors at Altandhu; CONTACT INFO
This file, and a large number of other files link from my web page at index.htm.
Any notes or corrections regarding the families in these files, please contact Donald, or myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross, directly, at [email protected]
I have arranged the columns in the order of the original census forms as below;
Name. Relationship to Head of Household. Marital Condition. Age if Male. Age if Female. Occupation.
Each Household is followed by notes that show the Enumeration District (all Altandhu was in #2), the page number, address as described by the enumerator, and places of birth. Also included in the first paragraph of the notes were any extra comments made by the enumator, such as referring to someone as "Blind".
The Households are identified by place, year of census and the enumerator's schedule number for the house.

Sibla MacLeod Niece 9 Scholar
Notes on this Household:
This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 8, the address listed as "1 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom.
In the 1871 census this family was at Altandhu 71-40, with Mary's then living husband Duncan as Head of Household. In 1891 census the family is at Altandhu 91-56, by then Keneth has married Margaret MacLeod.
Mary's death is registered as 12 June, 1887, Informant her son Kenneth. The registration confirms her husband had been Duncan MacLean, and says her parents had been John MacLeod and Anne, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
Cannot find the birth of Sibla in the I.G.I.

Alexander Do Son 4 Scholar
Murdo Do Son 3

Notes on this Household:
This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 8, the address listed as "2 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom. Flora is marked as "Imbecile".
In the 1871 census Flora's husband, John McLean, was Head of Household, see Altandhu 71-38. Cannot see this family in the 1891 Altandhu census.
The death of Flora is registered as soon after this census, 24 April, 1881 at Altandhu, aged 63 years, Widow of John McLean, Crofter. Her parents are noted as having been John Macbeth, a Tailor, and Christina, maiden surname McKenzie, Informant her son-in-law, Kenneth McLean.
I think Isabella's missing husband was Kenneth MacLean, as the I.G.I. records the birth 25 April 1874 of a son Kenneth in Lochbroom to that couple, have not yet picked out a likely Kenneth in earlier censuses as the husband yet though.

Notes on this Household:
This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 8, the address listed as "3 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom.
In the 1871 census this family, with William's Widowed mother Ann, was at Altandhu 71-39. Mary is listed in that census as born in SutherlandShire.
William and Mary, with a 14 year old nephew William, are in the 1891 census at Altandhu 91-55.

Notes on this Household:
This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 8, the address listed as "4 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom, except Mary MacLeod marked as born in Glenshiel, Ross.
In the 1871 census this family was at Altandhu 71-41, Murdo's occupation then as "Crofter", and his Widowed mother Catherine, "Ketty", then still alive.
Murdo dies 28 March, 1884 at Altandhu, son Roderick the Informant, his occupation noted as "Missionary of West Coast Missions". The death registration notes Mary's Maiden Surname was MacRae, and Murdo's parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Catherine, Maiden Surname MacLeod. Based on earlier records I think the Maiden Surname for Catherine was "MacLean", not "MacLeod".

This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 9, the address listed as "6 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom.
Cannot pick out John in earlier censuses, however Ann was a MacLean, she was in the 1871 census with her parents and other relatives at Altandhu 71-53. Her parents are in this census, with a six year old daughter of John and Ann named Mary, at Altandhu 81-45. In the 1891 census the family is at Altandhu 91-51.
A sixteen week old child of John and Ann, Murdoch, dies 13 April, 1887.
Henny is likely some relative of John, born 1 February 1861, she was in the 1861 census as a 2 month old at Altandhu 61-8.
Alexander Maclean in the next Household, Altandhu 81-35, is an uncle of Henny.

Young John marries 27 January, 1887 at Inverpolly to Christina McLean, also from Altandhu, a daughter of Kenneth McLean and Jessie, Maiden Surname McLeod, cannot see her in this census, but her parents are two households away at Altandhu 81-37. Notes on this Household:
This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 9, the address listed as "8 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom.
In the 1871 census this family was at Altandhu 71-44, John was marked then as "Married" but his wife Ann was not in the Household. By time of the 1891 census John the father has died, John the son has married Mary (?) from Ullapool and is living at Altandhu 91-41, and the other three children are together at Altandhu 91-50.
John's death is registered as 13 May, 1887 at Altandhu, Informant his son Donald. The registration states his wife Anne had been Maiden surname MacLean, and his parents had been another John MacLean and Anne, Maiden surname MacLean.

Notes on this Household:
This Household appears in Enumeration District #2, on page 9, the address listed as "9 House". All were marked as born in the Parish of Lochbroom. John is marked as "Deformed".
In the 1871 census this family with two older children was at Altandhu 71-45. In 1891 census Kenneth, Janet, and John are at Altandhu 91-49.
A daughter of this family, Christy, marries 27 January, 1887 at Inverpolly to Kenneth McLean, also from Altandhu, a son of Alexander McLean and Flora, Maiden Surname McKenzie, he is in this census with his parents two households away at Altandhu 81-35. The registration notes her mother Jessie (Janet above) was Maiden Surname McLeod.
There is a memorial stone at Badenscallie burial ground referring to this family erected by a nephew, Roderick MacLean, after Kenneth's name it has "Boy" in brackets, implying he was blonde or yellowish hair, "buidh" being Gaelic for the colour "yellow". It notes Kenneth died November 1899 aged 72, and wife Janet maiden surnamed MacLeod died 9 October, 1893 aged 63 years. Also on the stone are noted two other people, likely brothers of Kenneth; Hugh MacLean died March 1900 at Achnahaird aged 72, and Donald MacLean died March 1907 aged 77.

The Parish Register records the marriage 9 January, 1850 of Kenneth McLean of Altandubh to Christian Stewart resident of Polglass, a daughter of Duncan Stewart of Polglass. Chirsty was with her family in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-12 (all the Polglass familys were enumerated as part of Achiltibuie that year). Two of Chirsty's siblings, with other relatives are in this census at Polglass 81-13, and Alexander Stewart at Polglass 81-14 is a brother.
Kenneth has three brothers at Altandhu in this census; Alexander at Altandhu 81-35, John at Altandhu 81-36, and Murdo at Altandhu 81-45. John's 1887 death registration notes their parents nad been John MacLean and Anne, Maiden surname MacLean.

Murdo's parents have both died since the last census, father Murdo's death is registered as 19 February, 1877 at Old Dornie, age 94 years, a Widower. Though Informant of the death was his son John there were no people surnamed MacLean at Dornie in the 1871 or 1881 censuses, possibly a daughter of his was married to someone there.
