This is a notefile based on the families found in my transcription of the 1891 Census for Reiff, Faochag, and Camusglassellan. This and the other 19th century census transcriptions and notes are linked to my main introduction file; index.htm.
This census recorded the people who stayed the night of 5 April, 1891.
Camusglassellan was a hamlet of only two houses, and as the people enumerated there were often included with Reiff, I have included their data. Faochag never had more than two Households, and the families there were also often included with Reiff. This census only one family remains, and as the Head of Household is a 70 year old Widow I suspect this will be the last census when this most northerly of Coigach communities was populated.
As with the earlier censuses I have relied on good background and help from other people, the data presented on these web pages was in large part collected by them. I have created a contact file, with links to their emails and webpages where available; CONTACT INFO.
There are doubtless errors here not just in transcribing the data, but in interpreting it. Please, send me your data or corrections at [email protected], and I will add it!
Following the enumerators numbering system the households are numbered consecutively from 14 to 37. Faochag was spelled as "Feuchag", Camusglassellan as "Camusaghlashan", and Reiff as "Reef". I have ignored the page separations, as many households spilled over from one page to the next. I have identified the households by using a prefix of "91" to denote the 1891 census data, and a suffix based on the enumerators numbering.

Notes on this Household:
This Household is on Page 3 of Enumeration District 2. All marked as born at Lochbroom. This is the last Household at Faochag, which is today uninhabited, the enumerater in 1891 spelled the placename as "Feuchag".
Jessie's husband Hugh died 16 December 1884 aged 56 years. They were together in the 1881 census, when this family was at Faochag 81-2.
The Household at Reiff 91-17 includes the Widow and a son of a brother of Hugh, Duncan MacKenzie. And Jessie Ross at Reiff 91-23 is a sister of Hugh.
Many of my correspondants have MacKenzie ancestors who were part of this family, the MacKenzie family that this is a remnant of had a mill at Faochag in the late 18th, early 19th century period. See the file at Faochag.htm.
Hugh and Jessie had a son Murdo who went to Inverness, and whose descendants include Ron McKenzie in B.C. (CONTACT INFO). Murdo died 1923 aged 73 years, and is burried at the Badenscallie burial ground, commemorated on the same stone as his parents. Cela Beale in N.Z. (CONTACT INFO) on a recent holiday visited the burial ground and transcribed all the MacKenzie stones!
Hugh tells me one of that Murdo's daughters was his aunt Jessie, and though he has not yet found her birth registration, we wonder if she was the child above, visiting her grandmother?
Jessie was a Kerr, her sister Isabella was wife in the other Faochag croft in 1881 (Faochag 81-1), but is missing in this census. The MacLennan family history says Isabella and her husband John MacLeod moved from Faochag to Reiff after 1893, so I am sure she must still be in the area somewhere!
A sister of Jessie, Mary, is with her husband Alexander McLeod at Reiff 91-37.
Another sister of Jessie, Alexanderina, is married to Duncan MacLean and living at Reiff 91-28.
Three other Kerr siblings emigrated to Tasmania in 1853, Ron Williams (CONTACT INFO) is a descendant of Chirsty who went then. Ron and his brother in law Geoff Butler (CONTACT INFO) have done lots of research on the Coigach Kerrs.
Janet "Jessie" died 20 December, 1916 aged 95 years. I wonder if she stayed on till then at Faochag, possibly with the aid of various grandchildren? Regardless, the homes at Faochag are all now abandoned and in ruins.

Since the 1881 census, when this family appeared at Camusglassellan 81-1, Annie's husband Norman has died.
Annie was a MacLeod from Culnacraig (I think she was one of the "Bain" MacLeods there).
Roderick marries 28 July, 1910 at Altandhu to Bella McLean, his residence noted as Cammusglassellan, hers as Reiff. The registration notes his father then deceased, Bella aged 39 with both parents deceased, they had been Norman McLean and Mary, maiden surname MacLeod, Bella is in this census with her Widowed father at Reiff 91-19.

Annabella's absent husband is Donald. This family (with three older sons missing here) was in the 1881 census at Camusglassellan 81-2.
Donald and his son Murdo are away at the gamekeepers lodge at Aultbae in the Kinlochluichart area of neighboring Contin Parish, with son Kenneth nearby, see 91 Aultbae.
Kirsteen Urquhart of Troon is a descendant of this family. Her friend, Bill Hurring (CONTACT INFO), is researching the Reiff Urquharts, and has provided most of the following notes.
Annabella was a MacKenzie from Ullapool, she and Donald married 7 February, 1867. He dies 22 August, 1893, and she dies 17 November, 1922.
Catherine was born 19 June, 1875, it is thought she died unmarried in 1961.
Annie was born 21 January, 1878.
Young Donald was born 25 June, 1880, he married 9 July, 1909 to Mary Douglas, and died 19 September, 1942.
Isabella "Bella" was born about 1883. She later marries Nicol Leitch, but has no children.
No notes on Roderick, other than that he was born about 1886.
Since the last census, Donald's widowed mother Annie has died, but four of his siblings are living at Reiff 91-22. Mary McLennan in Reiff 91-32 is also a sister of Donald.
After Donald (senior) died in 1893 this family left Reiff.

Since the 1881 census at Reiff 81-22, Annie's husband Duncan has died. His death registration in 1888 gave his age at death as 80, the Informant was his son Roderick above.
Annie is originally from Lochinver in Assynt Parish of Sutherland. Her marriage registration to Duncan 5 March, 1833 says her maiden surname was also MacKenzie! Her death is registered as 9 February, 1899 at Dornie, aged 89 years, though Informant of the death was a nephew Alexander MacKenzie she was likely at the home of her daughter Henny, see Dornie 81-2. The registration notes her parents had been Roderick MacKenzie and Margaret, Maiden Surname Morrison.
Roderick died unmarried 9 February, 1896 at Dornie, aged 43 years, Informant his nephew, Murdoch McLeod (that would be the son of his sister Henny).
In 1883 Duncan testified on behalf of the young fishermen of Reiff to the Napier Commission on the plight of the Crofters. See duncan.htm.
A sister of Duncan, Janet "Jessie" Ross, is at Reiff 91-23. A brother of Duncan, Hugh, has died since the last census, though his Widow is at Faochag 91-14.
A daughter of Duncan and Annie was Mary. She married Donald Morrison and was in the 1881 census with Donald and 7 children at Achiltibuie 81-23.

Since the 1881 census at Reiff 81-20, Annie's husband William has died. Annie is listed in this census as blind.
Annie died 19 October, 1894 aged 89. Her death registration lists her father as "William McDonald, Farmer", and her mother as Mary McLeod. The Informant of her death was her son Kenneth, who is in this census at Reiff 91-29.
Eliza was listed as "Elizabeth MacLeod" in the 1881 census.

Norman and Bella, with a sister of Bella named Mary, were in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-19.
Norman was originally from Altandhu, though he lived a while at Camuscoille with his parents Donald MacLean from Altandhu, and Margaret Nicolson from Culcain in Assynt, and were there at Camuscoille in the 1851 census. His parents were also gt-gt-grandparents of Donald MacLeod in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO).
Norman's dead wife was Mary MacLeod, her sister Margaret "Maggie" is at Reiff 91-35. A brother, Alexander was at Reiff 81-3 in the last census, but is missing from this one, probably he has died since.
The death is registered 6 August, 1888 at Reiff of Mary MacLean, single, aged 25 years, daughter of Norman MacLean and Mary, maiden surname MacLeod, Informant her father Norman.
Bella marries 28 July, 1910 at Altandhu to Roderick McLeod, her residence noted as Reiff, his as Cammusglassellan. The registration notes both her parents then deceased, Roderick aged 58, he is in this census with her Widowed father at Camusglassellan 91-15.

Notes on this Household:
This family was in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-18.
At 8 p.m. on the 24th of March, 1887, a fishing boat was swamped, and two sons of this family, Hugh and George were lost. Also drowned were Roderick Ross, whose wife Maggie was a sister of Hugh and George (see Reiff 91-30), and a first cousin of Roderick, also named Roderick Ross. Only George's body was recovered, see the file at fourmen.htm
Iba (MacPherson) Ross married a son of the youngest child of Roderick and Maggie, and she recalled hearing that Maggie's father Donald MacDonald was still alive at the time of the tragedy, so given that his wife Elizabeth is a widow here, he must have died sometime 1887-91.
Elizabeth was maiden named MacLeod. I do not think any of her siblings are still here in this census, but the various Urquharts (Reiff 91-16, Reiff 91-22) are descended from her sister Ann, and Mary McLennan in Reiff 91-32 is another daughter of Ann. Barbara MacLean at Reiff 91-27 is a daughter of Elizabeth's brother Murdoch MacLeod.
A daughter of Donald and Elizabeth, Chirsty, went to Tarbat where she married my gt-grandfather Andrew Ross in 1870. Young Maggie Ross above might be a daughter of Chirsty, as her birthplace is given as Tarbat, however I think it more likely she was a daughter of Chirsyt's half-sister, another Margaret, who had two sons with father's name not noted.
Young Alexander above goes to New Zealand sometime after this census, where he joins his older brothers Donald and John, who emigrated earlier. Margaret Ward in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO), is a granddaughter of John who has sent me the following information on the three brothers;
"Donald Brown McDonald and Alexander McDonald went with (John). Neither of the brothers married - Donald had a butcher's shop and Alec was a shepherd and met an untimely death in a dray accident. John has approx 40 living descendants - about 10 in Australia and the rest in NZ except for our son, Derek, who is presently living in Germany."
John's wife in New Zealand, Isabella MacLean, was a daughter of Coigach people as well, her father Murdo MacLean was from Altandhu, (see Altandhu 51-104), and her mother Hughina MacLeod was from Polbain. (see Polbain 41-3).

Notes on this Household:
Mary and Christina, along with Christina's brother Kenneth, were in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-17.
Mary was a daughter of John MacLennan and Isabella MacKenzie, and her husband had been Kenneth MacLean from Altandhu.
Since the last census Mary's sister Isabella MacLeod has died, though two of Isabella's children, Roderick and Maggie are at Reiff 91-36, and a third, Murdo is at Reiff 91-31.
Kenneth MacLennan at Reiff 91-32 is a brother of Mary, and so is Alexander at Reiff 91-25.

Ann Urquhart, mother of these four, has died since the 1881 census when she appeared with them at Reiff 81-14. A sister of Ann, Elizabeth (MacLeod) MacDonald is still alive at Reiff 91-20.
Annie's death is registered as 24 May, 1903 at Reiff aged 80 years, Informant her brother John, parents noted as having been Murdo Urquhart and Ann, maiden surname MacLeod. John's death is registered as 24 March, 1913 at Reiff, aged 85 years, parents names match.

Donald Urquhart, a brother of these four, is missing from this census, but his wife and children are at Camusglassellan 91-16. Mary Mclennan at Reiff 91-32 is another sibling.

Notes on this Household:
Jessie and Eliza were in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-16, with Jessie's son Roderick, his wife Maggie (MacDonald see Reiff 91-20), and two of their children. Since then Roderick has drowned with two of his MacDonald brother-in-laws, and his cousin also a Roderick Ross. See notes at Maggie's household at Reiff 91-30.
Janet "Jessie" had a brother, Duncan McKenzie, who has died since the last census, but whose wife and family are here at Reiff 91-17. A brother of Janet, Hugh, has also died, Hugh's Widow is at Faochag 91-14.

These three were in the 1881 census (with badly matching ages!) at Reiff 81-15.
Two more unmarried sisters of these siblings are in this census at Reiff 91-33, a brother, Alexander, is missing from this census, but his family is at Reiff 91-34, another brother, William, has died since the last census, his Widow os at Reiff 91-35.
Another sister, Rachel, married Donald McLeay from Letters, and by time of this census is living at Ullapool (see Ullapool 91-a). Donald was a half brother of Mary McLeay, who is a gt-gt-gt-grandmother of Catherine "Cela" Beale in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO). Cela has obtained Donald's death registration 17 June, 1894, the cause of death was listed as "shock from blow by cow"!
This family is referred to in the book: "Cromartie ; Highland life 1650-1914" (SOURCE) on page 309. According to that source, William Gunn, the Factor of the estate recorded in 1887 that Hugh was 55 years old, paid six pounds rent per year, but was fifteen pounds, twelve shillings in arrear. He owned at that time six cattle and seven sheep, an old boat and two old nets, and could not say when he could pay his arrears. He had been unable to sell his stirks at the last market; he had made no improvements to his house or lot for generations.
Gunn is quoted in the book as saying about Hugh;
"He is able bodied but devoid of energy and stock dwindling down, case does not look encouraging. Complains lot to dead, sour in temper and evidently existing in the idea and hope the Crofters Commission will reduce his rent as well as cancel his arrears. Should be summoned for payment of arrears which evidently he does not intend to pay unless forced."

This family was in the 1881 census, at Reiff 81-13.
Kenneth in Reiff 91-32 is a brother of Alexander, and Mary MacLean at Reiff 91-21 is a sister. Since the last census Alexander's sister Isabella has died, but two of her children, Roderick and Maggie, are at Reiff 91-36, and a third, Murdo, is at Reiff 91-31.
Margaret was a MacLeod originally from Achnahaird, her son Angus above was named for one of her brothers. From the 1881 census it looks like Angus was then living at the community enumerated after Camuscoille, which I think was Achnahaird. (enumeration district 2, page 22).

This family was in the 1881 census, with four other children (including Kate's twin sister Margaret), at Reiff 81-9.
Janet was also a MacKenzie! She married Roderick 30 January, 1862.
A brother of Roderick's, Murdo, was married to a Catherine McLeod, and had at least one child, Alexina, who married a Murdo McLeod, and are grandparents of Alistair MacLeod, who is now the Highland Council official genealogist! (CONTACT INFO). I do not yet have the 1891 census transcribed for Tanera, however, in the 1881 census Murdo's widow and children were at Tanera 81-16.
Another brother of Roderick was John, who married Janet Stewart from Ullapool, and emigrated to Tasmania in 1853. John and Janet's descendants include Gwen Smith (CONTACT INFO).

Interesting that Murdo and Barbara were first cousins, as noted in their marriage registered 4 April, 1878, Barbara's mother Rachel, maiden surnamed MacKenzie, was a sister of Murdo's mother Catherine.
Barbara's maiden name was MacLeod. Elizabeth MacDonald at Reiff 91-20 was a sister of Barbara's father Murdoch.

This family was in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-8.
Alexanderina "Lexy"'s maiden name was Kerr. Her sister, Mary MacLeod, is at Reiff 91-37. Another sister, Janet "Jessie" is the Widow of Hugh MacKenzie at Faochag 91-14. Another sister, Isabella, married John MacLeod and hers was the second family at Faochag (missing on this census, but reportedly living at Reiff after 1893).
Three other siblings of Lexy emigrated to Tasmania in 1853, Ron Williams (CONTACT INFO) is a descendant of Chirsty who went then. Ron and his brother in law Geoff Butler (CONTACT INFO) have done lots of research on the Coigach Kerrs.

In the 1881 census this family was at Reiff 81-21, next door to Kenneth's parents; William MacLeod and Ann MacDonald, both houses then on the same lot. His widowed mother Annie is in this census at Reiff 91-18.
Hannah ("Johan" in 1881) was from a MacLeod family on the nearby island of Tanera, her parents there Duncan MacLeod and Mary MacKenzie, that family in the 1881 census at Tanera 81-1.
Kenneth had been the Tenant since about 1862, and a few years before this census he had built his house, barn, and byre with no help from the estate.
The book "Cromartie : Highland life 1650-1914" (SOURCE) refers to Kenneth on page 308. The Factor for the estate, William Gunn, wrote in 1887 that he had five cattle and twelve sheep, and had a boat for the salmon fishing. He was in debt to the estate for both rent and meal. The stated presumption was that the debt was a legacy of the famine several years before. The rental book quoted by the source said: "he has no cattle he can sell at the moment".

In the 1881 census this family was at Reiff 81-16.
At 8 p.m. on the night of the 24 of March, 1887, a fishing boat was swamped, drowning Maggies husband Roderick, his cousin (another Roderick Ross), and two of Maggies brothers, George and Hugh MacDonald (see Reiff 91-20).
Roderick's widowed mother Jessie and sister Eliza are at Reiff 91-23. A sister of Roderick, Jessie MacLeod, is at Reiff 91-34. She named two of her children Roderick, the second I am sure in honour of her recently drowned brother.
I have exchanged emails with Andrew Muir (CONTACT INFO), whose wife Iseabail is a daughter of a son of Murdo above, (and so is my third cousin!). After consultation with Iseabail's mother Iba, they have provided me with lots of data on the generations of Rosses that followed in Reiff (and continue to this day!).
Hugh above emigrates to Australia far as Iba was aware. He signed as next of kin, living in New Zealand when his brother Roderick joined the army in the first world war though.
Murdo married Jane "Jeannie" MacLeod from the neighboring croft, and was grandfather to the current Reiff Rosses.
Young Roderick emigrated to New Zealand. He joined the 1st Bn. of the Wellington Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, in the first world war. A Private, he was wounded in France and sent to a military hospital in England. He died of wounds 20th December, 1917, and was buried at Brookwood Military Cemetary outside London. It is unlikely he left family in New Zealand, as his next of kin info listed his mother in Scotland.
As Rodina is an obvious dimunitive of Roderickina, I think she must have been born following her father's death in 1887. She later married, and her now elderly daughter Mary is still living in Ullapool.
A fifth child of this family, Donald, is at Badenscallie with his aunt Ann, (a sister of Roderick Ross), and Ann's husband, Duncan Stewart, see Badenscallie 91-26.

This family (with only the two oldest children of course!) was in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-12. Barbara is listed as born in Assynt, Parish of Sutherland.
Murdo has two siblings in Reiff 91-36.
Murdo's mother Isabella was a MacLennan, Kenneth in the next household, Reiff 91-32, is his uncle, and so is Alexander at Reiff 91-25, Mary MacLean at Reiff 91-21 is his aunt.
Young Jane was also known as "Jeannie", years after this census she married Murdo Ross in the previous croft, Reiff 91-30, and is grandmother of the current generation of Reiff Rosses.
Young Hugh dies 20 December, 1918 of war wounds as a Private in the 10th Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders, and is buried at Badenscallie.

This family was in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-4, before 1891 they move to Altandhu.
Alexander in Reiff 91-25 is a brother of Kenneth.
Mary's maiden surname is Urquhart, four of her siblings are at Reiff 91-22, another brother, Donald, is missing from this census, but his family is at Camusglassellan 91-16.
A daughter of Kenneth and Mary named Anne married Roderick MacLeod from Inverkirkaig in the neighboring parish of Assynt. Mary Ann MacLeod above is their child. Anne and Roderick were gt-grandparents of Donald MacLeod in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO) through Mary Ann. A year after this census young Mary Ann has a brother Kenneth born, grandfather of Roderick "Roddy" Dykes MacLeod in Scotland (CONTACT INFO). Donald and Roddy have been major contributors to the data on this website! Roddy notes the children of Anne and Roderick as;
Before the 1901 census, John marries to Barbara McLeod who is in this census at Achnahaird 91-4. Barbara's brother Murdoch was a grandfather of Kate Ferris who lives now on the Isle of Lewis, CONTACT INFO.
Murdoch "Post" McLennan above was born November 1853 at Reiff and died 5 February, 1929 at Blairbuie. He married firstly 21 August, 1902 at the Bath Hotel, Glasgow, to Jessie MacLeod (31 years old at marriage, daughter of John McLeod of Polbain, deceased, and Christina, maiden surname McLeod, see Polbain 81-18). There was a scandalous divorce 15 July, 1903; Jessie had exchanged coded letters with her employer, a Presbyterian Minister in England, she arranged assignations with him the nights before and after her wedding, that he presided at. Murdoch did not call the Minister as co-defendant upon being paid �550.
Murdoch married secondly 1906 in Coigach to Mary Moir Campbell. Mary was maiden surname Campbell, she was first married to (?) Moir, and had three daughters with him. Mary was the district nurse. Murdoch and Mary had two children.

"Is there a family link to the MacLeod family at Reiff 91-34? Lance Corporal Roderick MacLeod enlisted in the 4th Bn Seaforths before being transferred to the 7th Bn. He left for France with my Gt-Uncle Murdoch. Mary Anne��s first husband Lance Corporal Murdo Campbell son of Alexander Campbell Polglass was also with them and succumbed to Pneumonia in Boulogne and buried at Wimereux 1915."

The 1901 census has Christian living with the family of Alexander McLeod whose family is in this census in the next Household at Reiff 91-34, her relationship in 1901 shows her to be a sister to Alexander.
Three unmarried siblings of these sisters are in this census at Reiff 91-24, a brother, Alexander, is missing from this census, but his family is in the next Household at Reiff 91-34, another brother, William, has died since the last census, his Widow os at Reiff 91-35.
Another sister, Rachel, married Donald McLeay from Letters, and by time of this census is living at Ullapool (see Ullapool 91-a). Donald was a half brother of Mary McLeay, who is a gt-gt-gt-grandmother of Catherine "Cela" Beale in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO). Cela has obtained Donald's death registration 17 June, 1894, the cause of death was listed as "shock from blow by cow"!

This family (with Jessies now absent husband Alexander) were in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-7. Jessie is listed as deaf in this census.
Three siblings of Alexander are at Reiff 91-24, and the 1901 census shows Catherine and Christian McLeod in the previous Household, Reiff 91-33 are also sisters. Maggie McLeod in the next Household, Reiff 91-35, is Widow of William McLeod, another sibling.
Another sister of the missing Alexander, Rachel, married Donald McLeay from Letters, and by time of this census is living at Ullapool (see Ullapool 91-a). Jessie was also known as "Janet". Her maiden surname was Ross. A brother of hers, Roderick Ross drowned in 1887 when his boat was lost, Roderick's widow and four of his five children are at Reiff 91-30. The unusual naming of Jessie's fourth child as a second Roderick was likely in honour of her dead brother.
Jessie's mother Jessie, and her sister Jessie are at Reiff 91-23.
Both Alexander and young Roderick enlist in the Seaforth Highlanders during the First World War. Roderick was a Lance Corporal with the Seventh Batallion when he died in Battle 9 April, 1917. He is buried in France.
The Commonwealth War Graves Comission has recently put its massive data base on line (SOURCE), which includes a few historical details on the death of Roderick;
"St.Laurent-Blangy is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, adjoining the north-east side of the city of Arras. Mindel Trench British Cemetery is about 105 metres north of the road from St. Laurent-Blangy to Gavrelle.
Historical Information: Until the 9th April, 1917, the British front line ran practically through the village. The trench (known to the Germans as Mindel Trench and called in 1918 McLaren Trench) was taken by the 9th (Scottish) Division on the 9th April, 1917 (date of death of Roderick), and the cemetery was made by the side of the trench after the battle.
The cemetary was used by fighting units and Field Ambulances until September, 1918, and it was called at times by the names of Stirling Camp and St. Laurent-Blangy Forward Cemetery. There are now nearly 200, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, a small number are unidentified. The cemetery covers an area of 827 square metres and is enclosed by a low rubble wall."
The 1901 census shows that Roderick W.'s middle name was "William".

Roderick's absent wife is Mary.
The death of four month old Henry MacLeod is registered as 15 June, 1888 at Laid of Reiff of hooping-cough, clearly young Henrina above was named to honour him. The registration notes Mary's maiden surname was MacKenzie (Informant was Roderick).
Murdo in Reiff 91-31 is a brother of Roderick and Maggie. Since the last census their mother, Isabella, has died. Isabella was a MacLennan, three of her siblings are in this census; Mary MacLean at Reiff 91-21, Alexander MacLennan at Reiff 91-25, and Kenneth MacLennan at Reiff 91-32.

This couple were in the 1881 census at Reiff 81-3.
Mary's maiden name was Kerr. Her sister, Alexanderina "Lexy" MacLean, is at Reiff 91-28. Her sister Janet "Jessie" is the Widow of Hugh MacKenzie at Faochag 91-14. Another sister, Isabella married John MacLeod and also lived at Faochag; they are missing in this census, but reportedly lived at Reiff after 1893.
Three other siblings emigrated to Tasmania in 1853 aboard the Sir Allan McNab. Ron Williams (CONTACT INFO) is a descendant of Chirsty who went then. Ron and his brother in law Geoff Butler (CONTACT INFO) have done lots of research on the Coigach Kerrs.
