The following communities are in the south-east area of Coigach. Historically this area was always part of the Barony of Coigach, though starting 1861 the Households of that part of Coigach "beyond the great rock" were enumerated separate from the rest of Lochbroom. Today it is more common to consider Coigach as the peninsula, and though the files on this website concentrate on that part, I am slowly adding more data here.

On Loch Achall is an island, said once to be inhabited, a "crannog". An article titled "ARTIFICIAL ISLANDS IN THE HIGHLAND AREA" in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquarians of Scotland, February 10, 1913, digitized online at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/PSAS_2002/pdf/vol_047/47_257_302.pdf includes a paragraph;

Loch Achall, Ullapool.-- Mr Hay Mackenzie, National Bank of Scotland, reports: "There is a small island or cairn of stones in Loch a Chal, Rhidarrock Forest, two miles from Ullapool, which is said to be artificial. . . . There is a path, now covered with water, leading to it, but which can easily be seen when the water is clear."

A contemporary referance notes to it as home of Torquil MacLeod, presumably Torquil Cononach MacLeod, the last MacLeod Baron of Coigach. Matthew Shelley working on his University thesis in 2006 studdied the "Gordon Maps", digitized online by the National Library of Scotland at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/index.html He notes them as "drawn up in the mid-17th century but relying on survey work from the 1580s-90s". Matthew notes the map shows a structure on Loch Achall and has text;

"Avon Challoskag in ye yle wereof Torhill McLoyd dwelleth is ye march between Loch Brym and Coigach. ye said river pleasant wt woods and plentifull in salmond."

An early black and white photograph of a thatched cottage at Ardmair, near Ullapool. It was occupied by the MacLeod family, the last occupant being Colin MacLeod. The community later erected alternative accommodation on an adjacent site and Colin lived there until his health made it no longer possible to do so. He died in the 1980.

The Parish Register records the christening 22 September, 1811 of "Sibila" to father James MacKenzie at Lochbroom, one of last three records at the bottom of the page, unfortunately just off my photocopy so place of James residence and possible note of his occupation have not been seen yet.

The death of Sibella "Isabella" MacKenzie is registered as 11 October, 1865 at Ardmair, aged 54 years, married to John MacKenzie, Lotter and Labourer. Her parents noted as having been James MacKenzie, Forester, and Barbara, maiden surname MacKenzie, Informant was her husband John.

Isabella MacRae                              30   Female Servant
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 5 of Enumeration District 10, all are noted as born in county.

Margaret with her second husband, the two children above, and three more, is in the 1851 census at Ardmair 51-59, her second husband, Murdoch MacLeod, away from home then.

It is likely Margaret was already a Widow by time of this census, she remarries soon after to Murdoch MacLeod, this family shows up in the 1853 emigration to Tasmania by fifteen Coigach familys aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see them in the passenger list at McNab 526

A daughter of Margaret and her second husband, Catherine, is a five year old on the emigration, her great-grandson Roderick "Rod" Edmond was born in New Zealand and lives in England. Rod notes Catherine married in 1872 at Launceston to James Edmond, they lived at Melbourne and had thirteen children, the youngest, Charles Roderick Edmond, was born in Melbourne but died in Hamilton, New Zealand, the son of Charles Roderick, Rod's father, is still alive at 92. Rod has written a great book telling the tale of two of his interesting great-grandparents, one being Catherine. See Migrations: Journeys in Time and Place

Rod Edmonds notes Margaret was maiden surname Stronach, fifth of seven children of Alexander Stronach, an InnKeeper at Garve in Contin, through Alexander she was a granddaughter of Rev. Alexander Stronach, a Minister of Lochbroom in the 18th century. Margaret had married 3 December, 1835 to Alexander MacKenzie. Rod thinks as Margaret had a child within a year of this census that Margaret above may be Widowed.

Rod notes Margaret's second, soon to be, husband Murdoch MacLeod is in this census at Strathan, a small inland hamlet of only a few households between Ardmair and Morefield. See Strathan 41-1.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10 of Enumeration District 6, Catherine was listed as born at Ross, Strathcanard, her daughters at Ross, Ardmair. The age for Christy does appear to be "2", likely either an enumeration error, or she was a daughter of Bella.

In the 1841 census this family was at Ardmair 41-10. In 1861 Catherine and Christy are at Ardmair 61-54.

This Household appears on page 11 of Enumeration District 6, George was listed as born at Reiff, and Janet at "Drumerun", which I am sure is the community near Ardmair now known as Drumrunie, though their places of residence as listed below in 1850 were Ardmair and Polglass.

George and Janet with four children are in the 1861 census at Ardmair 61-51.

George was a son of Murdo MacLeod and Margaret MacLean at Reiff, my own gt-gt-grandparents. He can be seen with them in the 1841 census at Reiff 41-7.

The marriage of George McLeod, a Tailor resident at Ardmair, to Janet McLeod resident at Polglass, was registered as 4 July, 1850. Unfortunately the forename of Janet's father disapears in the spine of the original document in the photograph on the microfilm of the census, though he is clearly described as a Crofter at Polglass in the wedding registration. My assumption is she was the 20 to 24 year old "Jannet MacLeod" in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-13, all Polglass families that year enumerated as at Achiltibuie. That family in this census at Polglass 51-54.

The births of two of their children give Janet's maiden surname as MacLeod also.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 11 of Enumeration District 6, All listed as born at Ardmair, Ross, except Martha at Achindrean.the transcription I have may be in error, but it shoes "Kenneth" as a daughter.

In the 1841 census this family was at Glutton 41-2, a small farm between Ardmair and Achendrean, in 1871 they are again at Glutton, see Glutton 71-2.

A descendant of this family, Ann Nelson, has emailed lots of data, she notes Martha was maiden surname MacKenzie.

In the 1841 census this family was at Strathan 41-1 .

Since the last census son Murdo has married the Widow Margaret MacKenzie (she was in that census at Ardmair 41-14), their family is in this census at Ardmair 51-59, Murdo away from home. In 1853 the family goes to Tasmania as one of 15 Coigach families aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see McNab 526.

This family was in the 1841 census at Ardmair 41-12, Margaret's now missing husband John then Head of Household. Have not yet identified the family in 1861, but in 1871 they are at Ardmair 71-21.

The death of Margaret Tuach MacKenzie is registered as 5 May, 1893 at Ardmair aged 93 year, Widow of John MacLeod, Crofter, her parents noted as having been John Tuach MacKenzie, Farmer, and Mary, maiden surname MacDonald.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 12 of Enumeration District 6, Charles listed as born at Langwell, Christy at Ullapool, and Lexy at Blugsarry. Malcolm Bangor-Jones remarks that though this Household was enumerated as at Ardmair, it was part of Strathan.

Have not yet identified these three in the 1841 census.

Charles was a descendant of the Mackenzie of Langwell family, he appears in the Mackenzie of Achiltibuie descent chart at position 2-1-4-3-3-1-9. His death is registered as 12 August, 1855 at Langwell, aged 47 years, unmarried, "Gentleman", and the registration notes his parents had been Thomas McKenzie Farmer, and Catharine, maiden surname Robertson. (Thomas was styled "IV of Langwell", sixth in succession of his family to hold that farm), Informant of the registration was his brother John. Registration of Charles' Inventory in 1857 notes him as "sometime residing in Langwell, thereafter at Strathan, latterly at Ullapool, parish of Lochbroom, co. Ross".

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 12 of Enumeration District 6, Sibbla, the mother, is listed as born at Achall, the rest at Ardmair.

This family was in the 1841 census at Ardmair 41-11, in 1861 they are at Ardmair 61-53.

The Parish Register records the marriage 23 February, 1832 of John MacKenzie, resident Morefield, to Sibylla MacKenzie, resident Kenachrean.

The Parish Register records the christening 22 September, 1811 of "Sibila" to father James MacKenzie at Lochbroom, one of last three records at the bottom of the page, unfortunately just off my photocopy so place of James residence and possible note of his occupation have not been seen yet.

The death of Sibbla "Isabella" MacKenzie is registered as 11 October, 1865 at Ardmair, aged 54 years, married to John MacKenzie, Lotter and Labourer. Her parents noted as having been James MacKenzie, Forester, and Barbara, maiden surname MacKenzie, Informant was her husband John.

In 1867 Colin marries Margaret Fraser, she is in this census at Morefield 51-133 as "Peggy". With three children they are in the 1881 census at Morefield 81-33.

Sibla's mother Barbra Mackenzie, "Forrester's Widow", is in this census at Kenachrine 51-85 with a 17 year old visitor from Ardmair, Margaret MacKenzie; a daughter of John and Sibla.

James MacKenzie at Morefield 51-122 is a brother of Sibbla, he was with their mother in the 1841 census.

These two were in the 1841 census at Ardmair 41-3, Margaret then Head of Household, likely widowed before then.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 13 of Enumeration District 6, all are listed as born at Ardmair, Ross, except "Mabell" at Achmore, Ross. I think it likely the forename of "Mabell" is mistranscribed, in 1841 wife of Roderick looks to have been "Annael".

This family was in the 1841 census at Ardmair 41-7.

Barbra Munro was in the 1841 census at Ardchairnich with a 55 year old Ann Fraser and a 20 year old Janet MacKenzie.

The death of Roderick is registered as 23 March, 1856 at Ardmair, aged 77 years, the transcription I have does not say if he was a Widower then or identify his wife. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Margaret, maiden surname MacKenzie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 13 of Enumeration District 6, Christy listed as born at Morefield, Ross, James at Ardmair, Ross, John at Ullapool.

There are a few baptisms recorded in the Parish Register that may be John, both look to be a few years to early;

Likely James and John were sons of Alexander MacKenzie and his wife Annable, in 1841 Annable was a Widow at Ullapool 41-73, matching age John was there, and James may have been away at the Caithness fishery.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 14 of Enumeration District 6, all are listed as born at Ross, Ardmair. Forename of "Jean" may be mistranscribed, but matches 1841 census. Relationship of Alex Robertson does look to be "Son", though as noted below he looks to have been a grandson.

In the 1841 census this family was at Ardmair 41-9. In 1871 Mary with her unmarried brother Angus is at Ardmair 71-19.

Alexander Robertson was with this family in the 1841 census, it is likely his father has died before then. His marriage is registered as 6 June, 1872 at Ullapool to Catherine MacKenzie, she is in this census with her family at Achendrean 51-15. The marriage registration notes Alex's parents as Murdoch Robertson, deceased, and Margaret McLeod.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 15 of Enumeration District 6, Margaret listed as born at Ross, Lochbroom, her children at Ross, Ardmair.

Margaret's missing husband is Murdoch MacLeod, he was in the 1841 census with his family at Strathan 41-1, that family in this census at Ardmair 51-44.

Margaret looks to have been already widowed from her first husband in the 1841 census, at Ardmair 41-14.

This family emigrates in 1853 to Tasmania aboard the Sir Alan McNab, see McNab 526, there are notes on descent there.

Young Catherine abovr was a great-grandmother of Roderick "Rod" Edmond, who was born in New Zealand and lives in England. Rod notes Catherine was born 4 July, 1849, married in 1872 at Launceston in Tasmania to James Edmond, they lived at Melbourne and had thirteen children, the youngest, Charles Roderick Edmond, was born in Melbourne but died in Hamilton, New Zealand, the son of Charles Roderick, Rod's father, is still alive at 92. Rod has begun work on a book which will be a tale of two of his interesting great-grandparents, one being Catherine.

George was a son of Murdo MacLeod and Margaret MacLean at Reiff, my own gt-gt-grandparents. He can be seen with them in the 1841 census at Reiff 41-7.

Murdo was born 14 August, 1856, and Alexander was born 20 August, 1859, the birth registrations say that Janet's maiden surname was also MacLeod.

George's father died in 1856, but he has other relatives in this census; Murdoch McLeod at Reiff 61-7 and Donald McLeod at Reiff 61-14 are brothers. Elizabeth McDonald at Reiff 61-23, and Ann Urquhart at Reiff 61-19, are sisters. Elizabeth was a gt-gt-grandmother of myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross (CONTACT INFO), and Ann is a gt-gt-gt-grandmother of Roderick Dykes MacLeod in Scotland (CONTACT INFO), and Donald MacLeod in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO).

In the 1851 census this family was at Dalvraid 51-137.

Andy Ross at Fort William descends from young James, I have not yet added all the information Andy has shared into this and the Polglass files, but that info included;

My Great Grandmother was Margaret Isabella MacKenzie from Polglass. She married James Ross, son on John Ross. Here are my notes on Margaret, some of which are plagiarised from your site!!!

Great Grandmother
In 1851 she is aged 4 and she is living with her parents at Polglass 51-68.
In the 1861 census she is still with her parents at Polgalss 61-63 aged 15 and described as a scholar.
In the 1871 census she is living with her parents at Achlochan71-67 and her brothers and sisters. She is said to be 25 years old which would make her birthdate at 1845. She is described as a dressmaker.
In the 1881 census she is aged 33 and described as a shepherd's wife and head of the household living at Glenoykel along with her children: John 7, Murdo 5, Alexander 4, Henrietta 2 and Thomas aged 3 months.
In the 1891 Census she is aged 43 living at Caplich, Strathoykel, Sutherland with her husband James also aged 43. Along with them are their children: John 17, Murdoch 15, Alexander 14, Thomas 10, Henry 8, Christopher 6, Elizabeth 5 and Isabella 2.
In the 1901 census she is living with her husband James and family at Caplich. She spoke both Gaelic and English. This census verifies that she was born in Lochbroom, Ross-shire.

She died on Christmas Day at 07:00AM in 1916. She died from chronic fatty infiltration of the heart and pulmonary congestion. She was certified dead by Dr. J.D. MacRae from Bonar Bridge. Her death was registered by her son Henry on the 29th of December 1916. Cannot make out name of registrar other than William but surname looks like Munro.

She is buried at Tutim Cemetery in Strathoykel, inscription on stone:

CR-E27
This stone has now fallen.
James ROSS, died 19 August 1938, age 91; his wife, Margaret MACKENZIE, died in Caplich, 25 December 1916, age 72; their daughter, Henrietta, died in Salochie, 4 August 1875, age 4.

Now Margaret had an illegitimate daughter to Angus MacLeod in 1865, she was called Janet MacLeod, also known as Jessie. I see in your notes on Margaret and Jessie you thought Jessie died young, well no... here are my notes on Jessie:

Janet/Jessie was born at 11:00 AM on the 10th September 1865 at Elphin, Assynt. She is registered as illegitimate, but her father is named on the certificate as Angus McLeod, Tenant. Her mother is Margaret MacKenzie, Domestic Servant from Polglass.

Her birth was registered by both her mother and father which is a requirement by law if the father is to be named on the birth certificate of an illegitimate child. She was registered at Kirkton Assynt on September 25th 1865 with Registrar Angus McEwan, but her registration is also transcribed into the register at Coigach as per Interim Registrar Donald MacRae.

Jessie is first mentioned in the 1871 census. She is living with her grandparents and mother at Achlochan 71-67, Coigach, Ross-shire. Her parents were not married, her father being an Angus McLeod.

In the 1881 census she is still living with her grandparents, at Achlochan 81-1, but by this time her mother was married to James Ross, my great grandfather.

I cannot find Jessie after the 1881 census as Janet or Jessie McLeod, so I assume she has married, but to whom?

The death of Elizabeth is registered as 9 February, 1883 at West Lodge, Rosehall, Sutherland, age 74, her parents had been Alexander McDonnel, a mason, and Henrietta, maiden surname McDonald, Informant her husband John.

The death of John Ross is registered as 6 October, 1890, aged 82 years, occupation Shepherd, at Rosehall, Sutherland, Widower of Elizabeth MacDonald, his parents had been Donald Ross, a Shepherd and Catherine, maiden surname MacLeod, Informant his son-in-law, Norman MacLeod.

In the 1851 census this family was at Ardmair 51-43.

Thie 1871 Glutton transcriptions were emailed to me July 2005 by Ann Nelson who has ancestors among the people above. Ann included a large number of notes, she wrote;

I have spent several delightful hours reviewing your web pages on the Coigach area of Co. Lochbroom. I am writing because I wonder if some of my ancestors fit in to the various families researched on your website. Here is what I know starting from most recent in time.

Colin MacDonald was born in Letters (according to the 1851 census) and baptised in Lochbroom March 1831, the eldest child of Murdoch MacDonald and Janet McLennan. He lived in Ardindrean until about 1865 when he emigrated to Canada settling in Keppel Twp., Grey County, Ontario. Colin married first Georgina McKenzie daughter of John McKenzie and Catherine Campbell in 1857. Georgina died in 1858. He then married Mary McLeod in May 1863. Mary was from Glutton and was the daughter of Martha Mckenzie and John Mcleod. (More about this family below)

Murdoch (aka Murdo) Macdonald (born c. 1805) married Janet McLennan (probably 26 Feb 1830 as per the IGI). They were the parents of Colin mentioned above. Murdoch and Janet were in Ardindrean for the 1841; 1851 and 1861 census. The 1851 census indicates Murdoch was born at "Crosstown" Rosshire although that may be an incorrect transcription. I have no idea where that is. Murdoch came with his son Colin to Canada and died in Keppel in 1889. The 1851 census (for Ardindrean) indicates Janet Mclennan was born at Braesmore c. 1800. I believe she died shortly after 1861 but I have not been able to find a death registration for her in Scotland. In addition to Colin, Murdoch MacDonald and Janet Mclennan had the following children: Catherine (born at Ardindrean c1832 and died at Letters in 1861; she was married to Hugh Rose); Justina (born c. 1834 in Ardindrean; married to William McDonald in 1854 and died at Letters in 1915); Alexander (born about 1837) and Donald (born about 1839).

Colin MacDonald's second wife (as mentioned above) was Mary Mcleod. On the marriage registration to Colin in 1863 she is listed as being from Glutton; her parents are listed as John Mcleod and Martha Mackenzie.

Martha Mackenzie died on June 8, 1882 at Glutton on the same day that her brother, John MacKenzie, died at Morefield. Martha is listed as age 82 and the widow of "John MacLeod, crofter". John MacKenzie is listed as age 77, crofter, and married to Margaret Fraser. Martha and John's parents are listed as "Thomas McKenzie, deceased pensioner (Chelsea) and Catherine McKenzie nee Mackenzie (deceased)" The informant for both Martha Mckenzie and John Mckenzie's deaths is Kenneth Mcleod son of John Mcleod and Martha McKenzie. On the 1881 census Martha (spelled "Moriah"), is listed as being born at Strath Canaird and her son Kenneth (with whom she is living is listed as being born at "Glutton"

John Mcleod died at Glutton on March 1, 1881. On his death registration he is listed as crofter, age 80. His parents are listed as "Hugh MacLeod, crofter (deceased) and Isabella Macleod (Mackenzie) (deceased). The informant is his son, Kenneth Macleod.

Roderickina Do Visitor 20 House Servant
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 21 of Enumeration District #6. Hugh noted as born at Kenachrine, Ross, birthplace of Margaret and Roderickina Ancestry transcribes at "Tancoll, Ross" (possibly Tanera or Achall?).

In the 1841 census Hugh with mother Catherine and servant Margaret, likely same as above, was at Morefield 41-49. Hugh is in the 1861 census with his wife Mary, and again servant Margaret, at Kenachrine 61-26.

Hugh dies 29 March, 1891 at Ullapool aged "about 105 years". Noted as House Carpenter latterly Pauper, Widower of Mary McKay. His parents are noted as having been John McLeod and Catherine, maiden surname McLeod.

Hugh dies 29 March, 1891 at Ullapool aged "about 105 years". Noted as House Carpenter latterly Pauper, Widower of Mary McKay. His parents are noted as having been John McLeod and Catherine, maiden surname McLeod.

Somehow during the course of his life Hugh gets crdited for living at least 20 years more than he looks to have done from census records.

The Ashburton Guardian, New Zealand, includes an article 18 May, 1890, that transcribes as;

      Hugh MacLeod, Morefield, parish of Loch Broom, County of Ross, Scotland was born in the adjoining parish of Assynt, township of Elphin, Sutherlandshire, on the 24th of November, 1783, so that he is now in his 107th year. He is still as "straight as a lamp-post." He says he gets up in summer between 5 and 6am, and goes to bed at 9pm. In winter he rises at 8am, and retires at 10pm. "I had," he says "to drop the croft, as I could not cultivate it at last, but I still cut my own fire (peats), and I carried home on my own back a creelful (84lb) yesterday." Continuing, he states: - "I take porridge and milk for breakfast, as I always did throughout my life; potatoes and herring and fish and mutton (salt), when I can get it." While in this humor he observed that he had grown fond of tea, which was absolutely unknown in his younger days, and that he was very heavy in chewing "thin witst."

This Household appears on page 22 of Enumeration District #6. Isabella noted as born at Isle Martin, the rest at Kenachrine.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-25, Isabella's husband Charles alive then.

Andrewina with a brother William emigrates to Tasmania in 1853, see McNab 525, that listing has them resident at Morefield.

The Parish Register says William McKenzie (the 1853 emigrant) married 6 January, 1853 to Mary Matheson. Mary is with her Widowed mother in this census at Ullapool 51-109. Her parents were Duncan Matheson, sometime carter of fish from Gruinard and Ullapool to Conon Bridge and latterly InnKeeper, an occupation continued by his Widow Flora, maiden surname Tolmie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 21 of Enumeration District #6. Kenneth noted as born at Ullapool, Ross, Margaret at Achiltibuie, Ross, birthplace of Murdo and Duncan is unclear, likely is "Ullapool".

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-30.

With them in 1841 were Alexander and Margaret now in the next Household, Kenachrine 51-83, presumably Alexander was a son.

The index to Civil Registration notes the 1886 death in Lochbroom of 87 year old Margaret Matheson, other surname MacKenzie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 21 of Enumeration District #6. Birthplace of Alex and Margaret is unclear, likely is "Ullapool", the children at Kenachrine.

In the 1841 census Alexander and Margaret were at Morefield 41-30, with the family now in the previous Household, Kenachrine 51-82, presumably Alexander was a son.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 22 of Enumeration District #6. John noted as born at Ullapool, his wife at Ardmair, the four children at Kenachrine, the grandchild at Morefield.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-31.

The Parish Register records the marriage 21 January, 1813 of John MacLeod, resident Achachall to Cathrine Stewart, resident Airdmare. MacKenzies and MacLeays who were residents at Achall also had occupation as Forrester.

Kenachrine 51-85

Barbra McKenzie Head Wid 60 Forrester's Widow
Margt McKenzie Visitor U 17 House Servant
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 22 of Enumeration District #6. Barbra noted as born at "Lochbroom", Margaret at Ardmair.

In the 1841 census Barbara was at Morefield 41-32. Margaret is a granddaughter of Barbra, she was in 1841 with her family at Ardmair 41-11, her mother "Sibella" (many spelling variations in records) was a daughter of Barbara and her late husband, James MacKenzie, Forester at Achall. Margaret's family is in this census at Ardmair 51-47.

In the 1861 census Barbara is Visitor to family of another James MacKenzie, at Ullapool 61-46, that James is married to Helen, maiden surname MacKenzie, and Barbara may be related to either. (The Parish Register records the marriage 9 August, 1849 of James McKenzie, Labourer resident Strathcanaird, to Helen McKenzie, resident Morefield, the name of Helen's father is lost in the fold of the page, though he is noted as being a crofter at Morefield).

James MacKenzie at Morefield 51-122 is a son of Barbra, he was with her in the 1841 census, his christening was registered as 31 October, 1813 at Achall to mother "Widow MacKenzie", suggesting Barbara's husband, James MacKenzie, Forester, died that year. Within three years of that Margaret MacKenzie at Achall married Donald MacLeay from Contin, who had position at Achall as Forester, likely following James. As there was only a few families at Achall, my guess is the Forester James MacKenzie was a brother of the Margaret who married Donald MacLeay.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 22 of Enumeration District #6, place noted as "Rhuardchaidle". The age of Isabel might be mistranscribed. Isabel noted as born at Glastullich, her children at "Rue", likely short for "Rhuardchaidle", the visitor Mary at Coigach.

In the 1841 census this family was at Ruath 41-2, Isabel's husband, Alexander MacKenzie, was alive then.

I think the Visitor, Mary MacDonald, was a Reiff MacDonald, Widow of Alexander MacLeod and was with him in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-24, three of her children are in this census at Achiltibuie 51-71. In the 1861 census Mary is with a son and grandson at Achiltibuie 61-37.

Somehow during the course of his life Hugh gets crdited for living at least 20 years more than he looks to have done from census records.

The Ashburton Guardian, New Zealand, includes an article 18 May, 1890, that transcribes as;

Alexander and Anabella Carmichael at Kenachrine 61-10 were with James in the 1841 census at Morefield 41-12, their nephew Roderick with them is most likely another child of James and Mary.

The Parish Register records the Baptism 31 October, 1813 at Ullapool of James to father James Carmichael. The index to Civil Registration notes the death 1882 at Lochbroom of 63 year old James Carmichael.

Roddie Macpherson has photographed and transcribed a stone to this family in the Mill Street, Ullapool, burial ground, see http://gravestones.rosscromartyroots.co.uk/picture/number1603.asp

Although the death of this James appears to be registered 1880, the stone notes the death as 24 April, 1880, "at sea", details not yet seen, likely the body was not recovered, and so the death was not registered for two years. The stone also shows Mary was maiden surname MacLean, and died 17 February, 1908. The stone also shows son Duncan died 24 April, 1890 (not shown in Civil Registration index), and young Betsy died 12 September, 1942, Civil Registration shows she died 1942, aged 82 at Lochbroom.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 1 of Enumeration District 2. Address listed as "Morefield Cottage Kanachrine". All are listed as born in RossShire, Lochbroom.

Kenneth is referred to in several histories as "the local Factor for Coigach". In 1853 he accompanied the families who emigrated to van Diemen's Land aboard the Sir Allan Mcnab in the first part of their trip, as far as Glasgow, see his letter on that dismal journey in the notes at the end of the file at mcnab.htm

There look to be several mentions of this family in the Parish Register on pages I have not yet photocopied to study. They include the marriage 9 March 1841 of Kenneth MacKenzie to Alexanderina Morison (confirmed in "The Mackenzies of Ballone", see below), and eight children to the couple, some with mother's forename as "Lexey";

  1. Catharine MacKenzie, above, born 7 February 1842, christened 4 April 1842,
  2. Margt Hellen MacKenzie, born 1 March 1845, christened 29 March 1845, died unmarried 19 May, 1869 at the family home, "Morefield Cottage", after a disease of ten years,
  3. Hay MacKenzie, above, born 25 October 1846, christened 17 November 1846, mistakedly transcribed into the IGI as "Kay", "female", his forename would have been chosen to honour the Landlord of Coigach, "Hay MacKenzie",
  4. Ann MacKenzie, above, born 21 July 1848, christened 4 September 1848,
  5. Dolina Mary MacKenzie, above, born 7 December 1849, christened 4 January 1850,
  6. Donald MacKenzie, above, born 14 July 1851, christened 5 August 1851,
  7. Colin MacKenzie, above, born 6 December 1854, christened 29 December 1854,
  8. Kenneth MacKenzie, born 2 September 1856, died 9 September 1856.

"Cath. McKenzie or Fraser" above had the marriage registered in the IGI at Lochbroom 21 July 1865 to Thomas Fraser, with three births to a couple with those names in Urray Parish;

  1. Alexandrina McKenzie Fraser, born 5 June 1866,
  2. Catherine Ann Fraser, born 25 February 1868,
  3. Alexanderina Margaret Fraser, born 3 October 1869.

The index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk includes mention of the will of;

"Mackenzie Kenneth 02/09/1890 retired Factor, sometime residing at Morefield Cottage near Ullapool, Parish of Lochbroom, County of Ross and Cromarty, d. 24/03/1890 at Morefield Cottage aforesaid, testate."

A short obituary of Kenneth MacKenzie in the 3 April, 1890 edition of the Scottish Highlander notes his son, "Dr Colin MacKenzie, Tain".

The book, "The Mackenzies of Ballone" (SOURCE), includes some details on Kenneth and his family. It describes him as a grandson of Alexander Mackenzie, III of Ballone through his father, "Donald of Fasnacrionach". Kenneth is said to have been born 26 May, 1803, died 24 March, 1890. He followed his father Donald, who died 1846, in Tenancy of Lechmelm, which he subsequently gave up, taking Tack of Morefield in 1852. Kenneth married 9 March 1841 to Alexanderina Morrison, who died 24 April, 1864.

That book lists 10 children of Kenneth and Alexanderina, and a few grandchildren, the list is somewhat different from that above;

  1. Hay Mackenzie, above, "born 25th October, 1846, succeeded his father at Morefield, and as Banker at Ullapool. On 9th June, 1880, he married Mary Helen, daughter of Thomas Mackenzie (Bad-an-Tairbeart), of Acha-na-h'Aird, Coigeach". Mary Helen is in this census with her family at Achnahaird 71-98 The book lists their children and grandchildren, noting that Hay died at Edinburgh, 25th February, 1930,
  2. Donald Mackenzie, above, born 14 July 1851, a Solicitor who died young,
  3. Colin Mackenzie, above, born 6 December 1854, a Doctor in Tain, married Isabella Pentland of Edinburgh, two children listed,
  4. John Mackenzie, died in infancy,
  5. Kenneth John Mackenzie, died in infancy,
  6. Kenneth Mackenzie, died in infancy,
  7. Catherine Mackenzie, above as "Cath. McKenzie or Fraser", born 7 February, 1842, married Thomas Fraser,
  8. Margaret Helen Mackenzie, born 1 March, 1845, died 19 May 1869 (two years before this census),
  9. Anne Mackenzie, above, born 21 July, 1848, married Alexander Ross also of Morefield (IGI lists date of marriage as 16 June, 1874), with five daughters,
  10. Dolina Mary Mackenzie, above, born 7 December, 1849, married as the second wife to the Reverend Finlay Graham, M.A., Sleat and Oban. Three children and four grandchildren are named to this couple.

Note that this list looks adjusted to place males before females, regardless of birth order.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 1 of Enumeration District #11. Only the last two have County of Birth noted as in County (which is Ross & Cromarty), the others have no note in that column, though at least Jean in later censuses is noted as born at Kenachulish.

I have not transcribed 1851 yet, but see young Jean, "Jane" in other records, marries 24 November, 1852 to Donald McLeod, a Weaver at Achduart, they are in the 1861 census at Achdart 61-6. Her 1887 death registration notes her mother Catharine above was Maiden Surname Matheson.

The death of Chistina, "Christian" above, is registered as 12 March, 1927 at Achduart, Widow of Alexander Grant, Shepherd, aged 94 years. Her parents noted as Neil MacLeod, Crofter, and Kate, maiden surname Matheson, Informant her nephew, Roderick MacRae.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10 of Enumeration District #6. All are shown as born in Ross Lochbroom, except James McKenzie born at Assynt. The forename of "Mabele" is unclear, and might be mistranscribed.

In the 1841 census this Household was at Kenachulish 41-1 with Alexander Robertson as Head of Household, next female was "Sibella", presumably that couple were parents of Charles. It is the only Household enumerated at Kenachulish in 1851. In 1861 Charles is married with two children, a Mother-in-law, and four others at Kenachulish 61-79, the address listed as "South Kenachillish". Cannot see Charles's wife Sibla MacKenzie in this census, but her mother Margaret, Widow of Kenneth MacKenzie, Tacksman of Corrie, is at Ullapool 51-42.

The index to Civil Registration records the marriage at Lochbroom 26 February 1857 of Charles Robertson to Sibbla MacKenzie 26 February 1857 and the births of three of their sons from 1857 to 1867.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 19 of Enumeration District #2. All are shown as born in RossShire Lochbroom, except Margaret McKenzie born at Assynt. Seems to have been an enumeration mistake to include some occupations in the column reserved for "Relation to Head of Family".

In the 1851 census Charles was unmarried at Kenachulish 51-37. In the 1871 census the family is enumerated at Kenachulish 71-7.

Margaret McKenzie was in the 1851 census with her daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" at Ullapool 51-42, in 1871 she is with her daughter Jamesina at Ullapool 71-65. Margaret's husband Kenneth died sometime before the 1841 census, he had been Tacksman of Corrie.

The index to Civil Registration records the marriage at Lochbroom 26 February 1857 of Charles Robertson to Sibbla MacKenzie 26 February 1857 and the births of three sons from to the couple;

Anne McDonald           W.          W.       66   Pauper
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 19 of Enumeration District #2, address listed as "North Kenachillish". Anne is marked as born in RossShire Lochbroom. In the column for "Relation to Head of Family" was written "W.", then crossed out.

In 1851 Anne was nearby at Achendrean 51-29 as "Ann McLeod". Though surnamed here as "McDonald", I am certain it is the same lady listed under her maiden surname, as her death registration 24 August, 1869 says she was daughter of Donald McDonald, and the other possible listing, Anabella McLeod two Households away at Kenachullish 61-83 is marked as unmarried.

The Parish Register records the marriage 6 February, 1815 of Anne McDonald resident at Achnahaird to Donald McLeod resident at Leckmelm, the 1851 census had a 29 year old daughter born at Lechmelm.

I think Anne's father, Donald McDonald of Achnahaird, was a brother of my gt-gt-gt-grandfather, John McDonald of Reiff, and so I'd love to hear from any descendants of her and Donald McLeod, my contact info is at; CONTACT INFO.

Anne in 1851 was two households away from Achindrean Strathcanaird McDonalds, possibly there because of some yet undocumented relationship. Patriarch of the Achindrean McDonald family, Murdoch, was of an age to be brother of Donald of Achnahaird and John of Reiff, unfortunately he died 1854, the year before the start of civil registration, so no definate relationship can be shown, but the coincidence points toward further research!

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 2 of Enumeration District 6. Community in this census spelled as "Langwell". All are listed as born in RossShire, Lochbroom, except David at RossShire, Tain.

In the 1841 census David, his wife Grace, Grace's mother, and other of her relatives were at Ullapool 41-134. Grace is again with her mother in this census, at Ullapool 51-96.

Grace was christened 8 June 1815 at Ullapool to parents Murdoch MacKenzie, a Merchant at Ullapool, and Susan MacGregor, from Innerhaddon, Fortingall Parish, PerthShire. Grace married 8 February 1841 to David Ferguson, tacksman of Langwell, David was born 15 February 1817 at Tain and christened there 26 February 1817 to parents Fergus Ferguson and Bell McPherson.

In 1855 a large number of old births and christenings were recorded in the Parish Register, mostly children in Tacksmen's and Merchant's families, including six children to this family;

  1. MacKenzie Ferguson, born 20 July 1842 at Langwell.
  2. Susanna Ferguson, born 15 August 1843 at Langwell, named after her maternal grandmother.
  3. Fergus Ferguson, born 12 September 1844 at Langwell, named after his paternal grandfather.

  5. Alexander Ferguson, born 6 April 1848 at Langwell.
  6. David Ferguson, born 26 May 1852 at Langwell.

In the 1851 census David with six children and eight servants was at Langwell 51-5, Grace was then with her mother at Ullapool 51-96.

Grace was christened 8 June, 1815 at Ullapool to parents Murdoch MacKenzie, a Merchant at Ullapool, and Susan MacGregor, from Innerhaddon, Fortingall Parish, PerthShire. Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 10 of Enumeration District 10. All marked as born in Ross and Cromarty.

The marriage was registered 22 December, 1825 of Alexander Urquhart to Catherine McAulay, both resident at Morefield.

In the 1851 census Catharine is Widowed, enumerated with her maiden surname as "Stewart", as were mistakedly the two sons with her, at Morefield 51-132.

In the 1851 census Christian is married to Donald or Duncan Munro at Morefield 51-134, forename of her husband varies between the 1851 and 1861 census, probably a mistranscription in either. My assumption is the 1851 census is correct with "Duncan", as he is noted as born at Ullapool, and there is a 20-24 year old of that name in 1841 at Ullapool 41-30, not seen in 1851.

In the 1851 census this family is at Morefield 51-121

This family emigrates in 1853 to Tasmania aboard the Sir Alan McNab, see McNab 532, there are notes on descent there.

I think John MacKenzie who is in the 1851 census at Morefield 51-129 is a brother of Alexander, he also is on the McNab emigration, and with him and his wife at Tasmania goes a daughter of Alexander and Rachel.

Margaret has a brother Donald close by their parents in this census at Rhidorroch 41-2, she also has a young brother John at Morefield 41-31.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 13 of Enumeration District 10. All marked as born in Ross and Cromarty.

In the 1851 census this family is at Morefield 51-108

The Parish Register records the marriage 20 February, 1818 of John McLeod, resident Strathcainard, to Christina Munro, resident Glacach.

The death of John MacLeod is registered as 26 January, 1865, noted as son of Alexander McLeod and Elspeth, maiden surname Fraser. The death of Christina is registered as 29 June, 1873 at Morefield, aged 70, her parents noted as having been Roderick Munro, miller and Margaret, maiden surname McKenzie (Informant her daughter Catherine MacKenzie, resident Letters).

Given that there is a child "Betsy" here, and John's mother was an "Elspeth", probably the Cottar Elizabeth MacLeod in the following household, Morefield 41-24, is John's mother. Cottars often had their humble home on the property of a relative.

Likely Elizabeth was mother of John MacLeod in the previous Household, Morefield 41-23, John's death registration notes his parents had been Alexander McLeod and Elspeth, maiden surname Fraser.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 14 of Enumeration District 10. All marked as born in Ross and Cromarty.

In the 1851 census this family is at Kenachrine 51-84 (Morefield was part of the farm of Kenachrine), John there shown as born at Ullapool, Catharine born at Ardmair.

The Parish Register records the marriage 21 January, 1813 of John MacLeod, resident Achachall to Cathrine Stewart, resident Airdmare. MacKenzies and MacLeays who were residents at Achall also had occupation as Forrester. Barbara MacKenzie in the next Household, Morefield 41-32, was Widow of a Forrester from Achall.

John MacLeay is in the Mackenzie of Achiltibuie descent chart at position 2-1-4-3-2-1-4-3-4, he was christened 22 August, 1823 at Achall, Lochbroom to parents Donald MacLeay and Margaret Mackenzie, his father a gamekeeper/forester like John MacLeod above, those parents are in this census at Rhidorroch 41-1. Wee John married 3 June, 1852 at Lochbroom to Margaret Davidson. Four younger siblings of John are in the 1851 census at Achendrean 51-6.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 14 of Enumeration District 10. All marked as born in Ross and Cromarty.

Barbara is in the 1851 census at Kenachrine 51-85, with her then is granddaughter Margaret MacKenzie from Ardmair, daughter of her daughter Sibella, that family is in this census at Ardmair 41-11. Sibella's death registration shows Barbara was maden surname MacKenzie, and her late husband had been James MacKenzie.

James is in the 1851 census at Morefield 51-122, with the family of his wife, Mary MacKenzie, not likely the Mary above.

There is a possible death registration of Barbara, I have not seen the image, and the age looks high, but the index to Civil Registration shows an 84 year old Barbara MacKenzie died 1866 at Lochbroom, no other surname, mother's maiden surname also MacKenzie.

If Barbara did live to the 1861 census, there are two Barb* M*ckenzies from age 50 to 99 at Lochbroom, one aged 70, the other aged 76, both had a "James" on same page (the 76 year old may be the one registered as died 1866 aged 84).

The christening of James was registered as 31 October, 1813 at Achall to mother "Widow MacKenzie", suggesting Barbara's husband, James MacKenzie, Forester, died that year.

This Household is on Page 15 of Enumeration District 10. All marked as born in Ross and Cromarty, except Donald.

In the 1861 census Mary is married to John MacKenzie at Ullapool 61-129.

In the 1871 census Margaret as "Catherine" is at Ullapool 71-42 as Widowed mother-in-law of John MacKenzie, Widower of Mary Campbell, the Mary above.

Margaret Mackenzie was christened 31 August, 1812 at Ullapool as "Catharine", the forename she also used in the 1871 census, but in all records as "Margaret", likely to honour a relative who died around the time of her birth. She died 3 August, 1904 at Ullapool "aged 92 years" with parents noted as Murdoch MacKenzie and Catharine Macrae. Her marriage was registered 17 February, 1829 to the schoolteacher Donald Campbell of Morefield.

Catherine marries 1 September, 1853 to John MacKenzie from Morefield, shortly after they emigrate to Tasmania, see McNab 531. John is in the 1851 census at Morefield 51-129.

Mary Campbell marries 22 December, 1859 at Ullapool to John MacKenzie, her second cousin, three times removed, she dies 11 December, 1868, two months after the birth of her daughter Mary (cause of death given by the Informant, her brother-in-law John MacPhail, was "Phitisis Pulmonatis").

The I.G.I. records the births of six children to John McKenzie to Mary Campbell;

  1. Catharine McKenzie, born 12 December, 1860,
  2. Donald McKenzie, born 5 August, 1862,
  3. Donald William McKenzie, born 29 January, 1864,
  4. Catharine McKenzie, born 18 September, 1865,
  5. Barbara McKenzie, born 6 July, 1867,
  6. Mary McKenzie, born 10 October, 1868.

John's death is registered as 8 June, 1882 at Morefield, aged 77, same day his sister Martha died at Glutton, see Glutton 71-2. Their death registrations both had Martha's son Kenneth as Informant. He noted parents of the two were "Thomas McKenzie, deceased pensioner (Chelsea) and Catherine McKenzie nee Mackenzie (deceased)", and Margaret above was maiden surname Fraser. A descendant of Martha, Ann Nelson, has shared lots of her research on the families.

In the 1851 census this family is at Morefield 51-104.

The Parish Register records the marriage 26 May, 1814, of Donald MacKenzie, resident Ceanchrine, to Catherine Kerr, resident Ullapool.

Interesting to see the 1851 census notes that Donald was born at Reiff, no doubt he was a son of Murdo MacKenzie and Mary MacLean there, though not mentionned in previous genealogies of that family, perhaps as he went off at an early age into the army, and on being pensionned settled here at Morefield.

This family is in the 1851 census at Morefield 51-129. With them then is a 27 year old John MacKenzie, I wonder if possibly that is the 18 year old John MacLeod above, an illegitimate son to Ann, shown now with her surname, and then with the father's.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 18 of Enumeration District 10. Hugh and Margaret marked as born in Ross and Cromarty, Catharine elsewhere.

In the 1851 census Hugh with the servant Margaret was at Kenachrine 51-78.

The Ashburton Guardian, New Zealand, includes an article 18 May, 1890, that transcribes as;

The Parish Register records the marriage 26 May, 1814, of Donald MacKenzie, resident Ceanchrine, to Catherine Kerr, resident Ullapool.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-44. In 1861 Mary, with her husband Alexander MacLennan and six children, is at Kenachrine 61-29.

Interesting to see Donald was born at Reiff, no doubt he was a son of Murdo MacKenzie and Mary MacLean there, though not mentionned in previous genealogies of that family, perhaps as he went off at an early age into the army, and on being pensionned settled here at Morefield.

I think Alexander and Ann were in the 1841 census at Ruath 41-12, the elderly couple there likely Alexander's parents.

Roddie Macpherson has photographed and transcribed a stone in the Mill Street burial ground that notes Alexander and Ann, see http://gravestones.rosscromartyroots.co.uk/picture/number1625.asp That stone notes Alexander died 22 December, 1887 at Rhue, and his wife, Ann MacRae, died there 25 November, 1897. The stone is also marked as "Erected by their son Donald of Vancouver BC."

The marriage of young Janet, "Jessie", is registered as 7 March, 1872 at Ullapool to Kenneth Stewart, both resident Morefield. None of the parents then noted as deceased, and Ann above noted as maiden surname MacLeod. Kenneth's parents noted as Donald Stewart and Margaret, maiden surname MacKenzie, that family is in this census at Morefield 51-100.

There is a stone at Mill Street burial ground, Ullapool, Roddie Macpherson includes a photo and transcription of it on his website at http://gravestones.rosscromartyroots.co.uk/picture/number1601.asp He transcribes it as;

This family emigrates in 1853 to Tasmania aboard the Sir Alan McNab, see McNab 532, there are notes on descent there.

I think John MacKenzie at Morefield 51-129 is a brother of Alexander, he also is on the McNab emigration, and with him and is wife at Tasmania goes young Lexy above.

In the 1841 census most of this family was at Morefield 41-7. Young Roderick was then with his Beaton (Bethune) grandparents at North Kenachulish 41-5, the Bethunes are now in this census at Achall 51-4.

In 1841 James was with his Widowed mother Barbara at Morefield 41-32, his mother, and a neice from Ardmair, is in this census at Kenachrine 51-85. Sibbla MacKenzie at Ardmair 51-47 is a sister of James.

Roddie Macpherson has photographed and transcribed a stone at Mill Street burial ground to this family, see http://gravestones.rosscromartyroots.co.uk/picture/number1603.asp That stone notes James ded at sea, 24 April, 1880, his wife Mary MacLean died 17 February, 1908, daughter Betsy died young, and son Duncan died 24 April, 1890. (index to Civil Registration shows Duncan born 1865, so not in this census).

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 32 of Enumeration District 6. All marked as born in RossShire, Colin at "Kenchrine" (often spelled "Kennachrine", Morefield was part of the farm of Kennachrine), Margaret at Achall, and their children at Morefield.

In the 1841 census Colin and Margaret were at Morefield 41-14, in 1871 the family is at Morefield 71-16.

Colin Mackenzie died 28 January, 1897 at Morefield aged 82, his parents noted as having been John Mackenzie and Anne Mackenzie, he married in 1840 at Ullapool to Margaret "Peggie" Macleay. Margaret was christened 28 October, 1819 at Achall, her parents were Donald MacLeay and Margaret Mackenzie. Margaret is in the Mackenzie of Achiltibuie descent chart at position 2-1-4-3-2-1-4-3-2, followed by their ten children.

Young Gregor Mackenzie died 21 June, 1912 at Marybank, Urray, Ross & Cromarty, he married 7 December, 1871 in Contin Parish to May Mackenzie (born about 1852 in Contin). Gregor like so many other MacLeay descendants was a Gamekeeper. Sometime between the birth of their son Donald in late 1872, and the birth of their daughter Jessie in 1874 they moved from Contin to Lochluichart, Ross and Cromarty, they moved again about 1879 to Drumintoul Lodge at Rothiemurchus, InvernessShire, where their fifth child was born.

Another daughter of this family, Catherine, born 1854, has descent traced in Canada and the U.S.A.

Margaret's parents are in this census at Achall 51-3, her brother Donald is at Achall 51-1, and she has four young siblings at Achendrean 51-6.

This Household is on Page 32 of Enumeration District 6. All marked as born Morefield, Ross, except John senior and Isabel at Assynt, Sutherland. I wonder if the age of youngest John might be mistranscribed? Possibly "1 mo" or such.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-13. In 1871 the son John with wife Isabel (as "Isabella") are at Morefield 71-11 with seven children.

The 1871 census shows Isabel, "Isabella" was maiden surname MacLean, and the I.G.I. records five births to her and John;

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 33 of Enumeration District 6. All marked as born at Ross, Strathcanaird, except John at Ross, Moorfield.

This family was in the 1841 census at Morefield 41-45. With them then was an 18 year old John MacLeod. I wonder if possibly that is the 27 year old John MacKenzie above, an illegitimate son to Ann, shown then with her surname, and now with the father's.

Probably John is the one who emigrates to Tasmania in 1853, see McNab 531. John married 8 June, 1853 to Catherine Campbell, she was in the 1841 census with her family at Morefield 41-34.

I think Alexander MacKenzie at Morefield 51-121 is a brother of John, he also is on the McNab emigration, and his daughter Lexy goes John and Catharine once they reach Tasmania.

Donald Do Son U 6 Do Do
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 33 of Enumeration District 6. Murdo marked as born at Ross, Lochbroom, the rest at Ross, Strathcanaird, though based on other census data probably only Betsy there.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-38. In 1861 they are enumerated at Kenachrine 61-25, the two communities are adjacent and possibly though the family enumerated then as at Kenachrine, they were still at Morefield. .

Young Roderick marries in 1872 to Emily Dawson of Ullapool, she is in this census with her family at Ullapool 51-94. Roderick and Emily are ancestors of Phil Shearn in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. That marriage registration shows that Elizabeth, "Betsy" above, was maiden surname MacLeod.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 33 of Enumeration District 6. Flora marked as born at Assynt, Sutherland, the rest at Morefield.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-48, Flora's husband Colin home then.

The Parish Register records 8 February 1828 of Colin McKenzie Morefield to Flora McKenzie Gluaich.

This family emigrates in 1853 to Tasmania aboard the Sir Alan McNab, see McNab 523.

Thomas Do Son Unm 13 Weavers Son
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 33 of Enumeration District 6. Cathrine marked as born in Ross, Strathcanaird, the other two at Ross Morefield.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-3, Catharine's husband Alexander Urquhart alive then. I think "Stewart" shown above was maiden surname for Catharine, and mistakedly noted as also surname for her children.

Christy Munro at Morefield 51-134 is a daughter of Catherine.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 34 of Enumeration District 6. Mary marked as born at Langwell, Ross, her daughters at Morefield.

In the 1841 census this family was at Morefield 41-2, Mary's husband Alexander alive then.

The 1867 marriage registration of Margaret, "Peggy", to Collin Mackenzie (see Ardmair 51-47) shows Mary was maiden surname MacLeod. Peggy and Colin with three children are in the 1881 census at Morefield 81-33.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 34 of Enumeration District 6. Duncan marked as born at Ullapool, Ross, Christy and Alexander at Morefield, Ross.

In the 1841 census Christy as "Christian" was with her Urquhart family at Morefield 41-3. Duncan was then with his family at Ullapool 41-30. In the 1861 census this family is at Kenachrine 61-13, Duncan then as "Donald", likely a mistranscription rather than a different Munro husband for Christy.

Christy's Widowed mother and two brothers are in this census at Morefield 51-132.

In the 1851 census John and Isabella were with John's Widowed father and three children at Morefield 51-127. In 1881 the family is at Morefield 81-34.

Isabella was maiden surname MacLean, the I.G.I. records five births to her and John;

Notes on this Household:

Place as "Morefield". This Household is on page 4 of Enumeration District #2. All noted as born at Ross, Ullapool.

In the 1851 census this family was enumerated at Morefield 51-124. In 1881 the family is at Morefield 81-29.

Sharie Argue, President of Clan Mackenzie Canada, is in contact with descendants of this family, her distant cousins through Margaret being a descendant of the Achiltibuie family. Sharie notes DNA of direct male descendants of her line match DNA of direct male descendants of Colin, suggesting Colin and Margaret were cousins, though how many generations back is not yet known. Interesting co-incidence that four Households away, at Morefield 81-33, is another Colin and Peggie MacKenzie. The father of that Colin, James, was I suspect a first cousin, once removed, of Peggie above.

Descendants of this family include Larry McKenzie, much information from his shared researches to be edited in here.

In the 1861 census Alexander was enumerated with a sistrer and nephew at Kenachrine 61-10, possibly the same place though as communities are adjacent.

The I.G.I. records the marriage 10 March, 1870 at Lochbroom of Alexander Carmichael to Janet Stewart. Presumably the initial "S" in Janet's name above was for "Stewart".

1813 Baptism of Alexander's brother James at Ullapool notes father of these Carmichaels was another James.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on Page 8 of Enumeration District 2. All are listed as born in RossShire, Lochbroom.

Colin was in the 1861 census with his family at Ardmair 61-53, Peggie was in the 1851 census with her Fraser family at Morefield 51-133. In 1891 this family is at Morefield 91-8, with Mary Fraser, mother of Peggie.

The marriage is registered as 7 February, 1867 at Lochbroom of "Collin" Mackenzie to Margaret Fraser, both resident Morefield, both 26 years of age, his parents John MacKenzie, tenant Ardmair, and Zibbla, maiden surname MacKenzie, deceased, her parents Alexander Fraser, deceased, and Mary, maiden surname MacLeod.

Young Sybla dies 19 August, 1957 at Dalmore House, an "old people's home" at Alness, Superintendant of that place Informant of her death. She marries 22 June, 1893 at Ullapool to Alexander MacLeod (born 14 August, 1856 at Ardmair as fourth child to George MacLeod and Janet, maiden surname MacLeod), he is in the 1871 census at Ardmair 71-20. Alexander predeceased Sybla. Through the Reiff MacLeod family of his father, Alexander was a first cousin, three times removed, of Donald MacDonald-Ross (myself, CONTACT INFO). The 1911 census at Ardmair notes Sybla and Alexander had ten children by then, eight still living.

Colin's maternal grandfather, James MacKenzie, was Forester at Achal in the early 19th century, I suspect he was a previously undocumented son of "John of Atachal", one of whose daughters was married to the Forester who followed James as Forester, a daughter of that couple, Margaret, "Peggie", is wife of another Colin MacKenzie, four Households away at Morefield 81-29. If true, that Peggie is a first cousin, once removed, of Colin above.

Rhidorroch is at the south-east of Coigach, on Loch Achall above Ullapool.

Gregorina    do                               6m
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10 of Enumeration District 11, place as "Rhidorch", all are noted as born in county.

This family is in the 1851 census at Achall 51-3, except for the three children, Roderick ("Rory" above), Ann, and Mary, with another child, "Hay", only six years old so not in this census, they were visitors at the home of an umarried dairy maid, Ann Munro, at Achendrean 51-6.

The youngest child does look to have name spelled as "Gregorina", unusual, she does not appear in later censuses, probably died young, MacLeay family genealogists note her as "Georgina". She had a nephew "Gregor" born 1844, possibly a naming to honour her.

Margaret MacKenzie at Morefield 41-14 is a daughter of Donald and Margaret, she was christened 28 October, 1819 at Achall to Donald MacLeay and Margaret Mackenzie.

Donald MacLeay in the next Household, Rhidorroch 41-2, is another son of Donald and Margaret, he is married with his own family in the 1851 census at Achall 51-1. Another son is John at Morefield 41-31, staying with another forester's family.

Four young children of this family are in the 1851 census at Achendrean 51-6.

Margaret is in the Mackenzie of Achiltibuie descent chart at position 2-1-4-3-2-1-4-3, she and Donald have a large descent charted there, mostly from data shared by descendants, see footnotes there.

Margaret's death is registered as 26 April, 1889 "aged 97" at her son Donald's home at Argyle Street Ullapool, her age varies in records, on balance of which my guess is a birth year about 1797. Her marriage was registered 18 April, 1816 in the Lochbroom Parish Register, and recorded again according to the custom of the day 22 April in Contin Parish to her groom, Donald MacLeay. Donald MacLeay's memorial stone says he died 5 April, 1868 aged 85, suggesting a birth year of 1783. His parents were Donald Macleay and Isabella, maiden surname Grant.

Margaret's residence at marriage in 1816 was noted as at Dalcanloch, a place on Loch Achall, Donald's as Mossfield, Parish of Contin. The 1851 census has Margaret born at Achall, Donald at Contin. At birth of their son Donald about 1817 they were in Contin, at birth of John 1823 they were at Dalvraid (near Achall), at birth of their son Alexander in 1826 they were at Leckmelm (the 1827 Militia List shows Donald there, under 30 years of age, "Tenant"). By birth of their son Rory in 1833 they were at Achall (Glen Achall) near Ullapool. They settled at Achall. Donald was Forester and Head Game Keeper to the Cromartie family of the Rhidorach Estate which included Achall, a position he was followed in by his son Donald, and then his granddaughter's husband, William Sutherland.

Young Mary marries in 1865 at Aultnaherry, the ferry house opposite Ullapool, to Alexander McLeod, who is in this census as a 3 month old with his family at Ullapool 41-175.

Donald Beaton                             15      Ag. Lab.
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 10 of Enumeration District 11, place as "Rhidorch". All noted as born in county.

Donald is married with his own family in the 1851 census at Achall 51-1.

Donald's parents, another Donald MacLeay and Margaret maiden surname MacKenzie, are in the previous Household, Rhidorroch 41-1. In 1851 those parents are still close by, at Achall 51-3.

Margaret MacKenzie at Morefield 41-14 is a sister of Donald, and John at Morefield 41-31 is a brother.

Donald Macleay is in the Mackenzie of Achiltibuie descent chart at position 2-1-4-3-2-1-4-3-1, born about 1817 in Contin, christened there 16 May, 1817, died 23 January, 1906 in Lochbroom Parish. He was Head Forester and Game Keeper of Rhidorach following his father, it is interesting that his sons continued the occupation; three generations of Donald MacLeays are documented as Gameskeepers who married Mackenzies! Donald looks to have been respected in his career, however Jean Stewart records an increasingly "obsteperous behaviour" that led to friction with the local factor, Kenneth Mackenzie, eventually leading to his dismissal and replacement in 1884 by his son-in-law, William Sutherland.

Donald married sometime between this census and 1843 to Hannah Mackenzie from Gairloch Parish, her forename sometimes recorded as "Johan". Hannah was said to have been born 1828, though her obituary notes at her death May 1897 at Ullapool her age as 75, which suggests birth year 1822. Hannah had an interesting ancestry herself, her father Charles Mackenzie a grandson of Sir Hector Mackenzie of Gairloch, her mother Janet Mackenzie a granddaughter of the famous "Strong Minister", Rev. James Robertson of Lochbroom.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 1 of Enumeration District 10, all are noted as born in county. Although place is noted as "Ruthan", it is followed by the two other households of Strathan, and from later censuses that was the place this family lived.

In the 1851 census this family is at Ardmair 51-44.

Given ages of children I think Barbara was a second wife of Alexander MacLeod, their marriage is recorded as 23 March, 1822, he resident at Morefield, she resident at Achindrean. Barbara died 23 November, 1859 at Strathan, aged 80 years, maiden surname MacKenzie, as had been her mother before.

Descendant Rod Edmond who has shared much research on this family notes Alexander MacLeod was still alive in the 1861 census (at Strathan?), age 88.

Murdo marries the Widow Margaret MacKenzie who is in this census at Ardmair 41-14, their family is in the 1851 census at Ardmair 51-59, Murdo away from home day of that census. In 1853 the family goes to Tasmania as one of 15 Coigach families aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see McNab 526.
