Judah CHURCH was born in 1787 in Ashfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. (living with daughter Mary and family.) He died on 28 APR 1853 at Oak Harbor, Island County, Washington.
The first recorded death was noted on May 22, 1853, when settlers discovered the body of Judah Church in the woods of his claim near Oak Harbor. A coroner's inquest was hastily convened at the site—official verdict, "unknown"—and the sixty-three-year-old native of Michigan was buried where he was found. Church's grave marked the beginning of many "farm burials" on Whidbey, an informal name given to internment on private land. When a death occurred in their family, settlers cordoned off a small plot of ground on their claims to serve as burial space, oftentimes extending that space to friends who had no property on which to be buried. Farm burials were common during the pioneer period when formal communities—and cemeteries—had yet to be established, and it was a burial custom which lasted on Whidbey Island through the late-1800s, and possibly longer.

She appeared in the census in 1870 in Tyrone, Kent County, Michigan. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Tyrone, Kent County, Michigan. She was living in 1901 in Marquette, Hamilton County, Nebraska. She died on 21 FEB 1907 at Marquette, Hamilton County, Nebraska. The Hamilton County Register, March 1, 1907.
After a long and lingering illness caused chiefly by old age, the soul of Mrs. Spencer Colby was released from the suffering body and returned to the Maker, Thursday, Feb. 21st. Mrs. Colby had been very patient and trusting during all of her late afflictions and bore her suffering like a true follower of the Lord. Josephine Churchill was born in what was known as The Forks of the Kennebec River, Somerset County, Maine, March 18, 1832, and died in the triumph of a living faith on Feb. 21, 1907. at the home of her son, Walter Colby, Marquette, Nebraska. On April 7, 1855, she was married to Spencer Colby of Moose River, Maine. They moved to Kent County, Michigan, in 1867 and from there they came to York County, Nebraska, in 1883 and a little later in the same year they located in Hamilton County, Nebraska, where they have since resided. For almost 52 years she and her husband have trod the pathway of life together, sharing alike the joys and sorrows in their journey. They met with many trying and perplexing problems, necessitating privation and sacrifice. She bore her part nobly and with grace and Christian fortitude, for in early life she gave her heart to Jesus and leaned upon him for strength. Thirty-five years of her life she has been a member of the United Brethren Church and in her quit unassuming way did what she believed to be the will of her Heavenly Father. She was the mother of ten children of whom eight are left, who with the father, four brothers, four sisters and a number of grandchildren and hosts of friends are left to mourn her departure. But we mourn not as those who have no hope; for through Jesus Chris we hope to meet again in that land where the saved never die. The funeral was held from the U. B. Church Saturday forenoon where Rev. L. O. Sanderson delivered the last rites, and the remains were laid away in the Richland Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved.
