Al was born in Boston, MA on May 29, 1920 and was raised in Rochester, NH, where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served in Panama during WWII. He was assigned to Battalion A, Battery 346 of Antiaircraft Search Light Battalion. Al was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1945. He met and married Naomi "Ski" Maier from Atlanta in 1946. They remained faithfully married for 61 years. Al moved to Atlanta in 1948 and attended Georgia State University. He began his career in the transportation industry in 1950 and worked in sales until he retired in 1985 as a District Sales Manager for Ryder Truck Lines. Al was was a devoted family man who had many hobbies and interests. He loved fly-fishing, gardening, cooking, reading, and all forms of music. His love of music was gained from his father, a professional musician. Al played all wind and keyboard instruments. Al's nature was that of a nurturer and his many interests were passed down to his daughter, son, and grandson. Al is survived by his wife, Naomi "Ski" Colby, his daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Cecil Cooke, of Atlanta, GA; son, Marc Colby, of Cumming, GA; and his grandson, Taylor Louis Cooke, of Austin, TX. A memorial service will be 11AM Monday February 25, at The Episcopal Church of St. Mary and St. Martha of Bethany, in Buford with Rev. Timothy Watts officiating.
