DIED.
Bradley G. Colby, who has been ill for some time, died at his home in this village, Wednesday evening. He was about thirty-two years of age, and has long been a resident of Alexandria. He was a nephew of our townsman, Mr. Joseph Colby. His father died in this village some five years ago. He leaves a wife and young child to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place from the family residence this, Friday, afternoon at oâ?Tclock. Rev. T. S. Eigelberner will conduct the service.

Bradley Goodyear Colby was born in Holland, Erie county, New York, March 26th, 1855. He removed to Hastings, Minn., with his parents in 1866, and to Lake Mary, Douglas county 1867, remaining on the farm until 1885. He was married to Addelle Steele, March 1878. Last December they laid a bright and lovely daughter of summers by the side of her grandfather in the cemetery. Her death after a long and severe illness so affected the parents that both were prostrated, but the mother after a severe illness has recovered, while the father has followed his little darling. He was conscious until the last and fully realized that death was at hand. His last thoughts were for his loved ones here. He leaves a wife, a little daughter, mother, sister and many other relatives and friends to mourn the loss of a genial friend and companion. "Rest in peace."

KINGSTON, NH - Brenda L. Holmes, 64, of 20 Circuit Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.
She was born Sept. 30, 1939, in West Newbury, Mass., the daughter of the late Wesley and Phyllis (Tuner) Colby. She lived in Haverhill, Mass., for many years and in Kingston for the past 30 years.
Mrs. Holmes was the bookkeeper for the former GBC Enterprises Trucking Co., Kingston.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, George E. Holmes of Kingston; two sons, Paul Ellis and Darren Ellis; three daughters, Sheri Ellis, Michelle Ellis and Chantel L. Holmes; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Wesley Colby and Jeffery Eaton.
At Mrs. Holmes' request there will be no services and burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

The Colbys were a normal family, and at times they did not always agree. So it was between the brothers Burt and Clarence. There was a burning friction between them.
When Clarence was very young he hardly knew this brother, for Burt was away at college much of the time and for several years was principal of a large high school.
About 1906 he returned to Nebraska to live with our family, and it was during those years that the two personalities clashed so badly.
Burt left his well paying teaching position and returned to Nebraska to take up another homestead. About that time there was a law passed called the Kincaid Act, and it allowed all previous homesteaders to file on an additional 480 acres of land and get title in three years.
It was during his college or teaching days that he became acquainted with a lovely young lady, Pearl Ochoner, who later became Mrs. Burton Colby. Her parents, who were quite prosperous, wanted her to marry a boy that was from a wealthy family, but Pearl loved Burton and was not interested in the local boy.
Pearl’s father told Burton that he could marry his daughter but must have at least $10,000.00 before he would give his consent. That was a small fortune.
As he dreamed of the coming marriage, brother’s heart must have been filled with great hopes.
Burton was an excellent teacher and taught the little Goose Creek School for three terms. His teaching was a great improvement over that of the little girls who had previously taught at the school.
Clarence, the father, started work on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in the fall of 1894. He was in charge of all construction, the buying of building material, and training of workmen. The Government at that time was endeavoring to get the Indians to go to school and was building schoolhouses in many locations throughout the reservation.
His position required knowledge, skill, and honesty, and the responsibility was killing. Nine years later he suffered a slight stroke and was obliged to resign. Returning to the ranch, he was in semi-retirement and never again was able to do hard labor. His salary at that time was only seventy-five dollars a month and form that he had to pay his board and room.
The family had a little income from the hay crop each year and that, with Clarence’s salary, was barely enough for the family to exist. Yet Burt took every cent that he could get his hands on and bought calves that soon grew into money.
Never once during those years did he buy any groceries or help in any way with the ranch expense. All equipment, horses, and everything that the family needed for the ranch was furnished by the parents.
The children, three sisters and a boy, and some years Josephine hired a man, worked in the hay field all through the haying season. Much of that hay was used to feed Burt’s cattle, for he soon had many more than his parents owned.
Burt, by saving every cent that he could get his hands on, did in those three years, accumulate the ten thousand dollars and won the lovely "Pearl Ochoner" for his bride.
At the time of life that should have been most rewarding to him, Burton experience a great loss, even to the point of seeing his lifetime savings disappear. With financial help from Clarence, and although he was well along in years, he recovered and was able to make a new start.
In 1963, when 86 years old, his life’s mission ended. He was gifted with an outgoing personality. Probably, to others, one of the most likeable of the Colby family; and he bestowed these enviable characteristics on his two sons.

Byron Colby was born the youngest of three children in Helena, MT. The family later moved to Newburg, N Y , where his mother died. The family then returned to the old Colby farm in Plainfield, NH.
During his years of growing up he knew the hard work of farming, but he also learned to enjoy hunting and fishing. He enjoyed these sports his entire life, although in later years he did his hunting with a camera. His photographs earned him several awards.
His early education was in a one-room grammar school to and from which he commuted by horse and buggy. In 1932 he graduated from Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH. He was awarded the B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry in 1936 by the University of New Hampshire. While a student there he was on the football and wrestling teams and was also an honor student, as shown by his memberships in Alpha Zeta and Phi Sigma.
His professional career started as a Rural Agent for Public Service Co. of New Hampshire applying electricity to the farm. This was the time of the Rural Electric Authority’s major expansion. In 1938 he joined the Extension Service in Middlesex County, MA as an Associate 4-H Club Agent, moving up to Club Agent in Essex County in April 1941. During W11 he was active in encouragng and teaching people in the county to produce as much of their food as possible. He was even known to have transported pigs in the trunk of his car.
In 1940, he married Esther Norris, his college sweetheart. They had two sons, Bruce and Alan, and also two grandsons.
Byron did such a superb job as 4-H Agent that he was hired as Extension Professor in Animal Science at the University of Massachusetts in 1947. His responsibilities were in the fields of beef, goats, horses, sheep, and swine. He was very proficient in his knowledge of these species, but he was also proficient in being able to work with people. He had a great sense of humor and used this in a very constructive way. His dedication to helping people improve themselves was a driving force and he used the livestock programs and his teaching to accomplish this.
In 1957 he earned an M.S. degree from Michigan State University with a major in Extension Education, and soon after began teaching livestock courses at the University of Massachusetts in addition to his extension work. In 1975 he was honored with the Outstanding Professor of the Year award by the Stockbridge School students.
During his 40-year career he served as a popular livestock judge throughout New England and eastern Canada, and he assisted with the shows at the Eastern States Exposition annually.
Professor Colby authored or co-authored 25 bulletins. He also published "Beef & Sheep Highlights" and "Pointers for Pork Profits" for 28 years. His most popular publication was "Dairy Goats - Breeding, Feeding and Management" (1966), which had 150,000 copies published and which is an official book of the American Goat Association. It is used in every state and several foreign countries. It should also be noted that he held over 20 offices in various professional societies and that in 1978 he was recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Animal Science.
His civic and church affiliations were many. He was a Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor for 15 years and troop committee chairman for three years. He was also a 50-year member of the Masons, Cheshire Lodge No. 23 in Cornish Flats, NH. He was a very active church member, serving as deacon for 12 years, teaching church school for seven years, and acting as a trustee for six years. His real interest was helping his fellow man in any way he could.
Byron Colby retired in 1978 and 11 years later he and his wife moved to Fallbrook, CA to be near their son and his family. Byron died there on November 22, 1991.
