Edward Eugene Colby

94, in San José, California. In the late 1950s, Stanford music librarian Edward Colby, who died September 22, 2006 at the age of 94, envisioned the university as a West Coast focal point for the use of recorded sound in the service of scholarship. With record collector, opera and Victor Company expert William R. Moran of La Cañada, California, Edward Colby founded the Archive of Recorded Sound. Both founders are now gone from the scene - Moran died in early 2004 - but the renowned institution they started and fostered continues to serve researchers with representative and significant recordings of music and the spoken word.

Ed Colby, known for his wry and inventive sense of humor, warmth of personality, and dedication to public service, was born July 5, 1912 at Oakland, California to Ida Cheshire Colby and Eugene Colby. From his mother, he acquired a love of poetry and an ability to memorize and recite. From his father, Ed learned to love music. He graduated in 1935 from University of California, Berkeley, with a B.A. in Music Composition. While at Berkeley, Ed also studied Sanskrit.

Ed Colby found work, and a calling, at the Oakland Public Library during the 1930s. He resumed his education and earned a certificate in librarianship from U.C. Berkeley in 1941. Because of Ed's linguistic ability, the U.S. Army provided him with instruction in Mandarin and sent him to China with Army Intelligence for a year and a half during World War II, an extraordinary and unforgettable experience for him. He also had opportunities to pursue his musical interests during his 4 1/2 year military career. Ed returned from Army service to Oakland Public Library Music
Division where he met Helen Pearson, originally of Chicago and also a lover of music and of life. Helen and Ed were married in the Unitarian Church on the U.C. Berkeley campus in 1947.

When Ed was hired by Stanford University Library to head the Music Library in 1949, Ed and Helen moved from Oakland to the Peninsula. The couple made homes in College Terrace, Barron Park, Menlo Park and Palo Alto's Professorville in the following years. During the 1950s, Helen gave birth to two daughters. Ed served as president of the Music Library Association and, in 1956, earned a Master of Arts degree in music from Stanford. In 1958, with Bill Moran, he founded the Archive of Recorded Sound at Stanford. Also in 1958, the Colby family moved to their home in West San José. During his 29 years at Stanford, Ed Colby taught music bibliography as a lecturer in music, and led the music library and archive through a vibrant growth period. He brought his many interests to his work life.

Colby's knowledge of several languages aided his reference work and allowed him to make multi-lingual puns to the delight and despair of students and colleagues. Retired from Stanford in 1978, Ed traveled, composed music (including Epithalamion for a California Wedding, performed by Herbert Nanney, for daughter Lisa's wedding to John), and continued to work with Helen on topics including the work and legacy of Swiss physician Albrecht von Haller. He continued to support and use public transportation (having loved Oakland's Key System) and to support conservation efforts. He was a regular at the De Anza College recycling center long before recycling gained wide popularity. During his retirement years, Parkinson's disease gradually, but surely, limited his activity; Helen filled the role of constant caregiver.

When his illness was at its worst, a quip or pun from him would let family members know he was OK. Ed Colby died at home in the company of his family on Friday, September 22, 2006, at the age of 94.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of San José; daughter, Lisa Christiansen and her husband, John and their grand-niece, Jennifer, also of San José; daughter, Jeanne Colby and her partner, Ken Lima of Mountain View; cousins on both sides of his family, many friends and assorted feline companions who frequently played their piano compositions for him.

No services will be held, at his request. Those who wish to make a gift in Ed Colby's memory are asked, with thanks, to contact the Memorial Fund of the Stanford Libraries for gifts to the sound archive or to contact the Music Department, Braun Music Center, for gifts to Stanford Music Department outreach to K-12 education. Donations in memoriam to Edward Colby for the Archive of Recorded Sound should be made out to Memorial Fund of the Stanford University Libraries with a note for Edward Colby and sent to Kelly D Morris, Development Associate GREEN LIBRARY Stanford University Stanford, California, 94305-6004. Donations for K-12 outreach in music may be made out to Stanford University with a note for Edward Colby and sent to Mario Champagne, Administrative Services Manager Music Department BRAUN Music Center, Room 101E Stanford University Stanford, California, 94305-3076.
