Frederick Myron Colby, of Warner, as well as all the Colbys of America, is descended from Anthony Colby, one of the Puritan colonists of Boston in 1630, who subsequently settled in Amesbury, Mass., where the house he dwelt in still stands. The second son of his father, Anthony was a lineal descendant of Sir Robert de Colebi, one of King John's knights in 1199. The family seat was in the County of Norfolk, England. In early times the name was variously spelled Colby, Colebi, Coleby, Colebey, Colebei, Chaulby, Colbye, and Colebeye. The name of two English towns, as well as that of descendants of the family living in their vicinity, is Coleby; but the family estate in Swardest is called Colby Manor. A Danish form is Koldby. The Colby arms are "argent, a chevron engraved between three scallops, sable, the crest a plumed helm and an arm grasping a naked sword. The motto, 'Vincit amor patriae.'" Anthony Colby, the American settler, had five sons and three daughters. From Thomas Colby, his fourth son, the line of descent was continued through Jacob, Valentine, Levi, Valentine, and Levi O. to Frederick Myron Colby. The following account of Mr. Colby is taken from the Twentieth Century Review for April, 1890 :-
"Frederick Myron Colby, the historical romancer and novelist and the most versatile writer in the Granite State, was born in Warner, N.H., December 9, 1848. He was the son of Levi O. and Mary (Durelle) Colby. His early education was obtained in the schools of his native town and of Concord. He never attended college, but his knowledge is extensive and sound. He is a good French and Latin scholar, has a wide acquaintance with English literature, and is familiar with all the old chronicles and sagas.
"Mr. Colby's early life was passed on a farm. He has always been a hard worker with brain and muscle, and has a physique abundantly able to sustain much fatigue. For a number of years he was a successful school teacher in Merrimack County. He had written considerably for the local press when, in 1872, a novel of his, 'The Pioneers of Kentucky ,' was published by R. M. DeWitt, of New York. This successful venture was followed by other attempts in the same channel. The winter of 1875-76 he spent in Washington, D.C., as the correspondent of Boston and New Hampshire papers; while several historical articles from his pen, of local interest, were written at the capital for some of the leading publications of the country. Mr. Colby may be regarded as a voluminous writer, having had published some thirty serial stories in various periodicals, quite a number of bound books, and over three hundred poems, besides numberless sketches and stories. His most meritorious work, from a purely literary standpoint, was a novel printed by the Methodist Book Concern, New York, in 1886, entitled 'The Daughter of Pharaoh ,' which has had a large sale. Another book, a juvenile for boys and girls, entitled 'Brave Lads and Bonnie Lasses,' was recently issued by the same house. He is at present engaged on a novel describing Oriental life in the days of Ahab and Jezebel, and he has also nearly ready a story of adventure for boys.
"As a townsman Mr. Colby is a valuable citizen; and socially he is much of a favorite, though somewhat inclined to be reserved in unfamiliar or uncongenial company. He is six feet in height, of fine physique and courteous manner. With a comfortable income from his pen, he lives as near, perhaps, as any one ever does the author's ideal life, in the pleasant village of his native town."
In 1882 Mr. Colby was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Maria George, daughter of Gilman C. George, a leading resident of the town. Since he came of age, Mr. Colby has been a candidate repeatedly for every office in town. He has been Town Treasurer four years, a member of the School Board six years, and Postmaster four years. He has been a Trustee of the Pillsbury Library since its establishment. Mr. Colby is a member of the New Hampshire Historical Society, of the New Hampshire Antiquarian Society, and an honorary member of the Manchester Press Club.
He was buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Warner, Merrimack County, New Hampshire

Gardner Colby, one of the leading dry goods merchants of Boston and a prominent woolen manufacture, died yesterday. He endowed Colby University, which bears his name.

Gardner Colby 1810 - 1879, Railroad developer, Philanthropist founder of Colby University was born in Bowdoinham, Maine on Sept 3, 1810. His Father, a wealthy merchant of Maine, lost his fortune in consequence of the second war with England and dying soon after, left his infant children to the care of their mother.
She removed to Charleston, Mass., where, through hard work and thrift, she was able to rear the children. Gardner received a good common school education and began his business life by a year's employment as a clerk in a grocery store. Then he entered the dry goods business, opening a store of his own in Boston when he was 20 years old. Later he embarked extensively in the manufacture of woolens when he laid the foundation of his great wealth (one article said he was reputed to be worth over $2,000,000). During the Civil War, he was one of the largest contractors to supply clothing to the Federal Army.
At one time, he was largely interested in navigation, engaging extensively in the Chinese trade. He also made profitable investments in real estate especially at South Cove near Boston. Later, he made large investments in railroads. In 1870, he was elected president of Wisconsin Central R.R.. He became one of the most extensive railroad developers and executives in the North West.
A devout Baptist, Gardner gave a great deal of money to Brown University and from 1855 until his death, he was annually chosen a trustee. He was also treasurer of Newton Theological Institute at Newton, Mass. In another book it states that he gave a building known as Colby Hall.
In 1864 the trustee's of Waterville College, Maine, realizing the great difficulty of continuing work with meager funds which had so long handicapped the institution, appealed to Mr. Colby for assistance. He responded at once and making a visit to Waterville to ascertain the real condition of affairs. He unhesitatingly pledged $50,000, subject only to the subscription of an additional $100,000 by other friends of the college. This act of his was its real salvation and by unanimous consent the name was changes to Colby University.
Mr. Colby's business life was passed in Boston. Of his two sons, Charles Lewis Colby succeeded him in the management of his railroad interests, and Rev. Henry Francis Colby, a noted Baptist preacher, continued his activities in the cause of religion and humanity. Mr. Colby died at his home in Newton Centre on April 2, 1879.

Colby College
Chartered in 1813 when Maine was still part of Massachusetts, and originally called the Maine Literary and Theological Institution, Colby is one of the oldest colleges in New England. After Maine separated from Massachusetts, the new legislature conferred upon the school the right to grant degrees, and in 1821 the institution was renamed Waterville College.
The turmoil of the Civil War severely tested the resources of the College as many students left the all-male campus and the school appeared on the verge of closing. At that point Gardiner Colby, a well-to-do Boston merchant and Maine native, stepped in to provide the funding necessary to avert tragedy. The grateful Board of Trustees thanked him for the gift by renaming the school after him.
A few years later another landmark event occurred at the school. Mary Low, who matriculated in 1871, became the Colleges first female student, and Colby gained the distinction of being the first all-male New England college to become coeducational.
Following World War I, Colby found itself crowded between the Kennebec River and the repair yards of the Maine Central Railroad in downtown Waterville. Ten buildings stood on a scant 30 acres, with six other buildings scattered across the downtown area. The trustees voted to move the College to a new site. President Franklin W. Johnson led the effort, and the campaign eventually proved successful, overcoming such major setbacks as the Depression and World War II. In 1952 Colby completed the move to the new site, Mayflower Hill, on land that had been made available to the College by the citizens of Waterville.

COLBY, Gardner, philanthropist, was born in Bowdoinham, Maine, Sept. 3, 1810; son of Josiah C. and Sarah (Davidson) Colby. His father died poor when Gardner was quite young, and his mother, to meet the wants of her children, removed to Charlestown, Mass. Gardner secured a fair education and engaged in mercantile pursuits in Boston in 1830. He was interested in various enterprises, including the china trade, real estate and manufacturing woolen goods. He gained a large fortune, principally through the sale of woolens during the civil war, and through the rapid rise in Boston "South Cove" lands. He was elected in 1870 president of the Wisconsin central railroad and built a line of 340 miles of railway, penetrating the forests of the state. During his lifetime, even when a clerk, he was a systematic contributor from his earnings to philanthropic causes. Brown university, the Baptist missionary union, Waterville college and Newton theological institution were his most conspicuous beneficiaries, and Waterville college became Colby university in acknowledgment of his princely gifts at a time of desperate need. He was treasurer of Newton theological institution, 1844-68; president of the board of trustees, 1870-79; a trustee, 1843-79; and trustee of Colby university, 1865-79. His son, Henry Francis Colby, born in 1842, was graduated from Brown in 1862, became a Baptist clergyman, and was elected president of the board of trustees of Denison university in 1890. Gardner Colby died in Newton Centre, Mass., April 2, 1879.

Colby, Gardner A., Proprietor of a moving picture theater and opera house in Plainview, was born in Plainview Township, January 27, 1873, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Colby. He was educated in the local schools and at a business college in Minneapolis, and for some years thereafter remained on his parents' farm, working for his father, at first by the month, and during the last year on a percentage. In 1898 he enlisted in the Fourteenth Regiment Band, as trombone player, and went with the organization to Chicago. After his return he was variously employed until 1909, in which year he entered into his present business, at first renting the theater, but later buying it, as his enterprise has proved a success. The house is provided with an elevated floor, and has a capacity of 200. Mr. Colby takes pains to secure good attractions, and that his efforts are appreciated is shown by the large number of patrons with whom the place is a favorite resort. Mr. Colby is a member of the Masonic order and of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was married, December 9, 1899, to Helma R. Christopher, who was born in Plainview, Minn., May 6, 1878, daughter of Nels and Anna Christopher. Of this union there is one child, Ruth, who was born September 21, 1905. Mr. Colby and his family attend the Methodist Episcopal church.

GARDNER R COLBY
Gardner R. Colby, one of the best-known merchants in this city, died suddenly of heart disease on a train near Monmouth Beach yesterday afternoon, while on his way to his Summer home at the beach. He was born in Boston in 1835 and was the son of Gardner Colby, a prominent merchant and manufacturer of that city who also founded the Colby Institute in Maine.
Mr. Colby came to New York about twenty-five years ago as his father's agent here. Several years later he entered into business for himself, and was one of the founders of the firm of Slade & Colby, which was later on succeeded by the firm of Harding, Colby & Co. The last named firm had a very extensive woolen trade, controlling a business of several millions of dollars annually. It did an extensive business for the Washington Mills until the failure of that establishment.
Mr. Colby was a through merchant and had such a practical knowledge of mercantile affairs that he was often elected to preside at business meetings of merchants and other financial men. He was the President of the Ninth National Bank, a Director of the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad, and was connected with various public and charitable institutions. He was a member of the Baptist Society and deacon of the Baptist church at Orange. In Summer he usually lived at Monmouth Beach.
