Herman came to Minnesota from Erie Co. New York on 18 Apr 1856, with his brother John. Herman was the first regular mail carrier from Yucatan to Caledonia, making the trip once a week, first on foot, then by mule. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in Company H of the Eighth Missouri Regiment in April 1861 and was discharged in September 1862. The 1890 VA census states: "Sent home from Benton Barracks sick with pneumonia in August 1862." Disability listed: Rheumatism. After his discharge, Herman lived in Iowa, Missouri, and finally in Kansas, where he was forced to return to Minnesota because of the "copious grasshoppers." Research by Tiffant Mulroy.

Samuel Colby of Amesbury, mariner, conveyed to his son Hezekiah Colby of Newbury, shipwright, on 5 November1743, land west of his homestead near Powow River. Hezekiah Colby of Newburyport, MA, shipwright, conveyed land in Amesbury to his brother, Obadiah Colby, of Amesbury, blacksmith, 21 July 1770. On 13 August 1770, Hezekiah Colby appeared at Fort Pownal, in Lincoln County, Maine, and acknowledged this deed. Later, on 15 October 1770, Hezekiah Colby, shipwright, "late an inhabitant of Newburyport, but now dwellin on a place called Deer Island," conveyed to John Greenleaf of Newburyport, a dwelling house and barn with land in Newburyport. This deed was also signed by Sarah Colby, his wife, who relinquished her right of dower, and it was acknowledged at Fort Pownal. His wife and family accompanied him to Deer Island, Maine, where they remained.

In Dunbarton (N. H.), March 1st, Mr. Hezekiah Colby, aged 60; he had been sawing with another person all day, came into his house about sun-set, sat down at his fire, and in a few minutes dropped from his chair without speaking a word or even a struggle, and shortley passed from time to eternity.

He was a farmer and member of the General Court in 1875. He built a house near the sawmill, owned by his son Philip, and lived there until moving to Concord in 1883. He lived in the brick house across from the Bow Mills Bank on South Street. His sons Philip and Hiram, took over the farm after he died.
