BROTHER AND SISTER DIE CLOSE TOGETHER

The latter was Mrs. Harvey G. Dickey, Formerly of This Place, A Woman Greatly Admired by Malone Friends.

A dispatch from Richmond, Vt., dated July 26, to the Burlington Free Press says. "By a strange coincidence a brother and sister, former residents of Burlington, Hiram E. Colby and Mrs. Sarah Colby Dickey, wife of Harvey G. Dickey, passed away last evening almost at the same time. Their deaths occurred at Mr. Dickey's camp at Lake Iroquois.

"Mrs. Dickey, was taken, suddenly ill with pneumonia last Wednesday and died at 10:30 last night. Mr, Colby was in his usual health as late as 7 p. m. last night when he was taken with acute indigestion and died at 8:45 p. m. preceding his sister, by less than two hours.

"Mrs. Dickey leaves her husband and a son, Dr. Gilmore C. Dickey, of Boston. A joint funeral will be will be held at the Congregational church in Richmond at 2.30 p. m. on Tuesday."

The above brief statement tells a story almost tragic in a family enjoying these summer holidays at their summer home and the sympathy of hosts of Malone friends goes out to Mr. Dickey for many years a resident of this village, and his son in their bereavement.

Mrs. Dickey was a. woman of most lovable qualities and engaging personality, who resided in Malone with the late Mr. and Mrs. Baker Stevens, for three years after her marriage in 1876 and made friends during that time of all whom she met. She had often returned here on visits, renewing and making firmer those acquaintanceships. She was the daughter of Judge and Maria (Colby) Safford, of Richmond, Vt. and would have been 75 years of age July 31st.

He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn a cherished father and husband, honored and respected by all who knew him. He was a man of sterling integrity, and unblemished character, a loyal citizen and true to his convictions and principles. Three sons were in the war of rebellion. A well rounded life is ended and the first family tie is broken, which has stood for more than 60 years, but our loss is his eternal gain.

He was buried on 8 DEC 1901 in the Courtland Cemetery at Rockford, Kent County, Michigan His obituary appeared in the Rockford Register, Rockford, Kent County, Michigan on 11 DEC 1901.

In Memoriam

Horace Colby was born of New England parents May 10, 1807 in Henniker, N.H. He received a liberal education and followed teaching when a young man. He was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Barker Aug. 26, 1841 and came to Michigan in the Fall of 1844. They located in Kent county in the township of Courtland, then a wilderness, on the tract of land which has been the Colby homestead all these years. He professed faith in Christ when a young man and united with the M. E. church in 1841 and of which he has continued a faithful member until his death, which occurred about 11 o’clock Friday night after a comparatively short illness.

His pioneer life in this county is characterized by his earnest and untiring labors in education and Sunday school work. He taught by precept and example the principles of truth and right and for more than 80 years he and his faithful wife lived in peace and happiness and for more than half a century upon the farm which they hewed from the forest. Here their nine children were reared composed of five sons and four daughters as follows: Isaac C. of Boyne, Truman W. of Algoma, James, on the old homestead, Joshua H. of Hart, Rothwell B. of Cadillac, Nelia, at the old homestead, Mrs. May Jones, of Plainfield, Angelina as invalid at the old homestead and Abbie M. who is teaching this year near the City of Grand Rapids.

He was honored and respected by all who knew him. He was a man of sterling integrity and unblemished character, a loyal citizen, true to his convictions of principle. Thus a well rounded life is ended and the fast thread is broken which has bound the family ties together for so many years. Our loss is his eternal gain.

Funeral services were help as the homestead Monday afternoon, conducted by Re. R. J. Slee and he was tenderly laid to rest in the Courtland cemetery.

Buried: Courtland Cemetery, Rockford, Mich.

Mills Attract Early Settlers

The Dowagiac Creek gave the city its start when William Renesten established his carding mill in 1831. Two years later he dammed the creek to create the millpond, still to be seen at the edge of the city limits on M-62 East. In 1833 his grist mill was built. It was sold to Holmes Spaulding the following year. Spaulding also built a saw mill at the same time. Settlers wishing to live close to the mills began to settle in the area.

Horace Colby purchased the grist mill in the 1860s. It was known as the upper mill. Colby also owned another grist mill, a quarter mile downstream, known as the lower mill. Today, it is owned by Mennel Milling Company, which is the oldest mill in Michigan still in operation on its original site.
