Howard Milton Colby, 97, of Riva Vue Road, Lunenburg, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday morning, Jan. 4, 2005. Mr. Colby was born in Lunenburg on April 10, 1907, at the Colby Farm, the ninth child and fourth son of Luke and Nellie E. (Smith) Colby. He attended the Pierce District one-room school with his oldest sister, Olive, as teacher, and the Lunenburg High School for two years until it closed. He then went to work for his uncle, Don Colby, in the wood industry, turning bobbins at the Bobbin Mill in the Pierce District, and cutting timber at the Colby sawmill in Victory, Vt. He met his wife-to-be, Iola Hodgdon of Granby, Vt., while logging there. They married May 29, 1932, had their three surviving children, and observed their 70th wedding anniversary in 2002. He lived most of his life in Lunenburg involved in the wood industry and farming. In the early 1940s, he purchased his brother Ralph's farm and in the mid-40s, formed the E. & H. Colby Lumber Co. with his brother Ellis. The business later became Colby Lumber Corp., incorporating their sons, and supplied custom-sawed lumber throughout the area, including pallets to local paper mills. It closed in the mid-80s due to Canadian competition. Howard was an avid outdoorsman all his life until his 80s, fishing and hunting, including many trips to Canada with friends where he also owned a cottage for some years. He impacted his lore for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He and his wife exemplified the best of dancers at the local country dance halls until their health began to fail. Saturday night kitchen junkets were held in neighborhood homes where he played the harmonica. During the depression and 1940s, he and Iola just managed to provide for their family but he would share a few dollars with those who came knocking at the door asking for a temporary loan. The sugar-on-snow parties at the Howard Colby sugarhouse, benefiting the Lunenburg Methodist Church, were an annual event for the area and attracted many from away to the traditional spring event. Until the last years of his life, he was proud of their vegetable gardens and no visitor left without fresh vegetables. He was a member of the Lunenburg Methodist Church and the Masonic Order of the Benton Lodge 88 of Guildhall, Vt. He was presented with his 70th pin by dignitaries of the order on his 97th birthday in 2004 and planned to return this April for the presentation of his 75th pin. He is survived by a daughter, Judith C. Young; sons and spouses, Weston H. and Frances Colby, and Amos C. and Mary Jane Colby, all of Lunenburg; a sister, Rachel C. Gould of Kingston, Mass.; a cousin, Erma Simonds of St. Johnsbury; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three grandchildren; his wife in 2002; a son-in-law in 2003; and 12 siblings. Funeral services were held at the Bailey Funeral Home, Jan. 8, officiated by the Rev. William J. Brown III. A Masonic service concluded the celebration of Howard's life with 11 brothers participating. Spring interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg, Vt. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio. net worth listed as $265,000. He died on 2 JAN 1893 at San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Colby, Hubbard -- Born in New Hampshire more than seventy years ago, a stalwart man as we might expect, a son of the Granite Mountains, he came to Ohio in the early forties; taught school, studied law, wrote editorials, and was first associated with Mordecai Bartley, for a time in the practice of his profession, then with Henry B. Curtis, of Mt. Vernon, and afterward was made cashier of the Farmers Branch of the State Bank of Ohio, and continued in the employment of that bank and its successor in business until 1873. He married in Mansfield, his wife being the daughter of George Armentrout, Esq., and for a brief time was engaged in the mercantile business with his father-in-law. Later on the death of Mrs. Colby he married the daughter of Dr. S.W. Sells. When the firm of Hall & Allen quit business he, with Edward Sturges, Andrew L. Grimes and others, organized the Mansfield Machine Works. He also became interested in the Mansfield Gas Light Co. and for a number of years he was very active in manufacturing and other enterprises of Mansfield. On his becoming a member of the Baptist church, he was largely instrumental in the up building of that denomination of the Christian church in Mansfield, and to him is due the erection of the church building, corner of Park Avenue West and Walnut Streets. He served as mayor of the village in 1850, and associated with him was Wm. Johnson as recorder, the same Johnson who edited the Bugle in 1844 and was Congressman in 1862-1864. He was councilman in 1857-58-59 and again in 1866-67, and was regarded as an active, energetic and careful citizen. His practice of the law was limited, more especially on account of of the business engagements. The financial distress and panic of 1873 carried him down, and shortly thereafter he migrated to the Pacific coast. His first years in California were years of great hardships. He was too old to resume the practice of his profession and too poor to enter on new business engagements, and in time he was appointed to a clerical position in the office of the collector of the Port of San Francisco, which position he filled till his death some two years ago. In politics, a Whig so long as that party continued its organization, and then an ardent Republican. Had he attended to his profession, he might have taken rank there. As a financial man he was consulted, advised with and trusted for many years, but his last years in Mansfield were unsatisfactory, and yet he was ever regarded as a man of ability and brain. He was of commanding figure, good presence and socially much liked. A contemporary of Kirkwood, Burns, Brinkerhoff, Carpenter, Sherman, Ford, Bartley; the junior of Parker, Purdy, John M. May, C.T. Sherman and Mordecai Bartley. He lies buried within sight of the broad Pacific sea in the golden lands of California. Yet the records of Richland's bar would not be complete without mention of Hubbard Colby. -- H.C.H. [Richland Shield & Banner: 22 December 1894, Vol. LXXVII, No. 32] Parents: Reverend Joshua M.
