Jean Colby Shields, 80, of Salem, S.C., died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, after a lengthy illness.
Born on September 27, 1926, in Rochester, N.Y., she was the daughter of Gladys (Williamson) and Bernard A. Colby.
She was educated in the Longmeadow, Mass., public schools, graduated from Classical High School, Springfield, Mass., in 1944, and from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1948 with a BS degree.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Longmeadow, Mass., a former member of the Junior League of Springfield, Mass., and Hartford, Conn., president of the Springfield, Mass., Skidmore Club, and an honorary member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1952.
Various life insurance companies employed Jean as a secretary from her graduation from Skidmore through 1956, when she became the secretary to the president of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company until 1988.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reed, in 2006, and her brother, Donald B. Colby, in 1994. A stepdaughter, Margo Dufresne of Pennsylvania, survives her.

VERNON, Vt. - Jeannette C. Smith, 86, of Vernon, Vt., died April 25, 2004, at the Vernon Greene Nursing Home.
She was born on Dec. 9, 1917 in Warner, NH, the daughter of Addison and Elsie (Morton) Colby.
She grew up in Warner and graduated from Simonds Free High School. She also attended Bay Path Junior College in Springfield, Mass.
She worked as an administrative assistant for Prudential and Metropolitan, and later for the bishop at the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire and for the dean at Notre Dame in Manchester.
She painted, sang in the choir, performed in drama groups, loved to travel, played the piano, the violin and several sports.
She was president of the Business Professional Women's Club and the first woman president of the Lions Club in Manchester.
She is survived by two daughters, Jan Blanchard of Brattleboro, Vt., and Dee Kronenberg of Attleboro, Mass.; a brother, George Colby, of Oceanside, Calif.; a sister, Elaine Emerton of Goffstown; three grandsons; a granddaughter; and her companion, Irving Bly of Claremont.
Her first husband, Philip Kronenberg, died in 1972. Her second husband, William Smith, died in 1987.
Calling hours will not be held.
Graveside services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Fund.

Jeffrey Michael Colby, age 45, of rural Brewster, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at the Worthington Regional Hospital.
Jeffrey Michael Colby, age 45, of rural Brewster, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at the Worthington Regional Hospital. He was born June 27, 1957, in Worthington, to Junior and Bonita "Deeda" (Datzman) Colby. He graduated from Brewster High School in 1975.
Jeff married Janet Brua on July 31, 1983, at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, in Reading. After their marriage, the couple lived in rural Brewster. Jeff worked for Hawke Harvester & Co.; and at Ag Country Enterprises. He later became self-employed as a building contractor.
He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Worthington. Jeff enjoyed hunting, fishing, volleyball, golfing and especially loved the Fourth of July family campouts. Jess was an inventor at heart. He enjoyed creating things. He loved to spoil his nieces and nephews.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Janet Colby, rural Brewster, two sons, Justin and Jason Colby, rural Brewster; daughter, Jennifer Colby, rural Brewster; parents, Junior and Deeda Colby, rural Brewster; two brothers, Mark (Jolene) Colby, Alto Loma, CA; and Rob (Shana) Colby, rural Brewster; four sisters, Juanita Colby, Sioux Falls, SD; Janine (Randy) Harvey, Sioux Falls, SD; Pamela (Kip) Brettingen, Minneapolis; and Renee (Mike) Baerenwald, Fulda; two uncles, Joe Datzman, Remer; and Dan (Beth) Colby, Verndale; two aunts, Elaine (John) Wasem, Hamilton, MT; and Elaine (Ned) Valentine, Ohio; mother-in-law, Gerry Brua, Worthington; two brothers-in-law, Jack (Dee) Brua, Eau Claire, Wi; Mike (Sharon Brua, Brandon, SD; and Todd (Kim) Brua, Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Lisa (Todd) Bahnub, La Crosse, WI; thirty nieces and nephews; one great niece; many cousins; and three close friends, Clair VanGrouw, Steve Naumann and Earl Thurston.
His paternal grandparents, Roy and Vida Colby; maternal grandparents, Maynard and Agnes Datzman; father-in-law, Jack Brua Sr.; and an aunt, JoAnn Datzman, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 23, 2002, at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington with Revs. Bill Blundell and Mike Zaske officiating. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brewster.
