Melissa Cousins

The following is an obitiuary from the Deer Isle Messenger Friday, October 22, 1920.

Mrs. Melissa E. Cousins

Mrs. Melissa Elmwood Cousins passed away at her home in Stonington, at 4:30 on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 13, 1920.

Melissa Elmwood Colby was born May 27, 1844, at Webb's Cove, the daughter of Mr. Oliver L. Colby and Abigail Knowlton Colby. Her ancestors were among the first settlers in this neighborhood, and included the Colbys, Thurlows, Knowltons, Buckminsters, and several others whose names are familiar to those acquainted with Deer Isle's early history.

Somewhat early in life she married Joseph Davis and they had four children, Floreston I., Charles B., Elizabeth V.L., and J. Carlton.

After the death of her first husband she married Samuel E. Holden, and they had one son, Amasa A. Holden. After Mr. Holden's death she was appointed keeper of the Deer Isle Thoroughfare Light in his place, and remained there for two or three years, during which time a change was made from lard oil to kerosene oil as a means of furnishing light, and she was the first to make use of kerosene for that purpose in the lighthouses along the Atlantic Coast.

Her third husband was Charles C. Cousins, and their children are Jennie D., C. Lyman, Robert K., and Ethel F., Willie E. Cousins, the son of Mr. C.C. Cousins by a former marriage, was always loved by her as a son, and she was looked up to by him and loved as a mother. The word mother, with all its fine, sweet meaning, is the word by which she will be best remembered. All her nine children lived to grow up and to marry. Two of them, Floreston I. Davis and C. Lyman Cousins, passed on before their mother, but her other seven children and sixteen grandchildren survive. Every one of her living children came home at the time of her death, although two of them did not arrive in time for the funeral. Charles B. Davis came from Vinalhaven, Maine, J. Carlton Davis and Mrs. Elizabeth V. Pierce from Boston, Amasa A. Holden from Hillsboro, N.H., Mrs. Jennie D. Muttart from Concord, N.H., and Mrs. Ethel F. Heath from Ambler, Penn. In addition to her children she is survived by two brothers, Alonzo and William Colby, and by a sister, Mrs. Joseph Eaton.

Mrs. Cousins had been in rather poor health for some months, but at the end her death was unexpected and somewhat sudden. The funeral was held from her late home in Stonington at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, Oct. 15th. Rev. Eugene V. Allen of the Stonington church officiated and the burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

A useful, helpful, sympathetic life was closed but her influence will continue and increase with time, and her host of friends will never forget her bright, cheerful self sacrificing disposition and her many acts of kindness. Her children, scattered as they are, in several states, deeply mourn their loss, and will miss the almost annual summer visit to their old home and their mother.

Melissa Elwood Colby, born in 1844, died in 1920. Her father was Oliver Colby (grandson of Joseph Colby, Jr.), her mother was Abigail Knowlton. They lived at Webb's Cove (Tea Hill ) Stonington.
Her first husband was Joseph Davis. Their children were Floreston, who drowned at sea in 1888, Charles, Lizzie, who married Frederick Pierce and died in 1957, and Carleton. Lizzie's daughter Dorothy died in 1946.
Following the death of Joseph Davis, Melissa married her former school teacher, Samuel Holden, who had four children by a former marriage, all older than Melissa. Mr Holden was by now retired from teaching and had secured employment as keeper of the Mark Island Light at Stonington (Deer Isle) Thorofare, Penobscot Bay (Green's Landing). Here their son Amasa Amidon was born, 16 March, 1872. Amasa A. became a teacher, as had his father and grandfather before him, then principal of a high scholl in York, Pa. and later a county superintendent of schools in New Hampshire.
When Samuel Holden died in March 1874, Melissa was appointed Lighthouse Keeper (quite a coup for a female in those days!) Melissa kept the light for several years, at the same time caring for her four children on the lonely island.
As was the custom of the time, she kept a table 'covered', that is, set with plates and silver for the next meal with a cloth drape over all. Under thecloth Melissa kept a loaded gun. Whenever a sailor landed at Mark Island and approached the house, she remained near the covered table. She reported prooudly in later years, "I never had to use the gun."
Her third husband, Charles Cousins, was the captain of a three-masted schooner that carried loads of hay, apples, fish, etc, up the Penobscot River from Stonington. He and his four brothers had grown up at sea with their father on the family fishing vessel. He had two sons, William and Percy, by a former marriage to Lizzie Stinson, presumably of Deer Isle. (The Stinson settlement adjoins that of the Joseph Colby, Jr. lot. Cousins' two wives may have been related, a Charles Stinson, the original settler of the lot, married a daughter of Joseph Cilby, Sr.) Parents: Oliver Lane COLBY and Abigail Yeaton KNOWLTON.

MELVIN AMBROSE COLBY

Einan's Funeral Home

Melvin Ambrose Colby, 81, passed away peacefully on December 23rd at Calloway Gardens in Kennewick, Washington. Mel left a legacy of love and an enduring model of humility, kindness and the value of the simple things in life.

Mel was born on an icy night in Plummer, Idaho, in April 1928. He was the fourth of six children born to Miles and Altha Colby. During WWII, Mel worked three summers with the Forest Service. Mel graduated from Harrison High School in 1945. When he turned 18, Mel joined the U.S. Navy for a 2-year hitch. In 1948, an amazing love story began that would span over 60 years.

Mel married Velda Stephens on May 14, 1949, in Richland, WA. Mel and Velda lived in Couer D'Alene through the winter of 1949 and then moved to Grandview, followed by a move to the Tri-Cities in 1950. The Colby household was an active one with four children Randy, Sandie, and twins Mike and Steve. Square dancing was a favorite shared hobby for Mel and Velda, and they bought and managed the Hoe-Down Center for a number of years. They loved fishing, swimming, camping, and traveling in their motor home to Arizona, Nashville and Mel's beloved northern Idaho.

Mel worked as contract administrator for J.A. Jones at Hanford except for three years in Michigan, where he worked on the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant as a superintendent for J.A. Jones from 1969 to 1972. The family returned to the Tri-Cities, where Mel finished his working years until retiring in 1990. After retirement, Mel enjoyed playing guitar, writing and recording country music.

Throughout the years, Mel and Velda's love for one another was deep and affectionate. Nothing could break or weaken their love, not even the cruelty of Alzheimer's disease, which struck them both and marked another path they took together.

Mel and Velda indeed shared happiness in life, through sickness and in health, and because of the hope we have through the saving grace of Jesus Christ, the celebration has really just begun.

Mel was preceded in death by his father, Miles; mother, Altha; sister, Melba; brothers, Roy and Lyle. He leaves behind his wife, Velda; son, Randy Colby; daughter, Sandie King (Joe); Mike Colby (Joan); Steve Colby, grandchildren, Rick, Matthew and David Colby, Sherrie Martinez; and four great-grandchildren; sisters Monie (Tim) Fish and Donnie Svoboda.

The family is grateful for the loving and caring staff at Callaway Gardens and Hospice.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Mel's life at 1:00 on Saturday, January 2nd, at Memories at Sunset Event Center located on the beautiful grounds at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland, WA. Please join us immediately after the service for a reception also at Memories at Sunset Event Center.

The family invites you to express your thoughts and memories in the online guestbook at www.einansfuneralhome.com.

TWO CORONER'S VERDICTS

Sudden Death of Colonel Merrill Colby -- Joseph Herbst's Body Found

Yesterday was another bust day for Coroner SHARP. in the afternoon he dragged the canal for two hours and succeeded in recovering the body of Joseph HERBST, the six-year old boy of Mrs. Barbara HERBST, of 177 Pinnacle avenue. The body was taken to Foehner & Maier's undertaking rooms, where an inquest was held this forenoon, resulting in a verdict that death was the result of accidental drowning.

Just before the 4:55 train was about to leave the Central depot for the Falls yesterday afternoon, a trainman noticed that an elderly gentleman, sitting nearly upright in a seat, was dead. He notified the assistant depot master and the car was cut out of the train and left standing in the depot. Coroner SHARPE was notified and he caused the remains to be removed to Jeffrey's undertaking rooms. The contents of the pocket showed that the dead man was Colonel Merrill COLBY, whose home from Vineland, New Jersey, and who, with his wife, had been temporarily living at Parma Corners. While residing there his time had been devoted to settling up the estate of Mrs. STEPHENS, who died there recently. The object of his trip to the city was to consult with Judge HULETT about proving the will of Mrs. STEPHENS. While in the city, as he had informed Judge HULETT, he had consulted a physician who had treated him for heart disease. He had resided at different times in Nunda, Bath, Avon, Corning, and was well known, as a good and honorable man of business, everywhere respected for his probity and generous nature. He was seventy-six years of age and has sons living in Eastern States.
Coroner SHARP held an inquest this afternoon. The verdict was that death was caused by heart disease.

A snow storm commenced 7:00 o'clock Tuesday A.M. , now covers ground over an inch. The trees loaded. No fruit blossoms open yet- we may have a fruit year yet. I have seldom seen so backward a season as this- I have spent the winter and spring mostly at home. Was in Washington D.C. in Feb. about 10 days. My claim was then laid before the committee. My turn of hearing in turn is expexted soon, and I expect to be in W D.C. this week, may go tomorrow if it clears up- not to stay any length of time on account of gardening here.

My health if full middling. My study of what some call (science) but nothing can be called by that name unless true truth is science, no matter what the subject is. The laws of God are not debateable; facts are facts.

The truth of revilation is without compromize. I am still anxious to have you close up and sell out and leave for more genial clime. I hope, if money matters get easy to sell out all my mechanical & nautical matters of interest. Except my copyright. Please write me here or at Washington D.C. before the middle of next week, otherwise to me here in N. Jersey.
