OLIVE COFIELD Olive Colby, first child of Edwin and Katherine Simmons Colby, was born December 1, 1854 in Oswego, New York. She came to Illinois with her parents when a small child. They settled in Shabbona Township and she has lived all her life in this community. She was married to Peter Cofield December 31, 1873. To them seven children were born, three of whom preceded her in death. Her husband died in 1912. She entered into church with the M. E. Church of Lee and has been a faithful member for fifty years or more. She was a woman of strong character, loyal to her convictions and true to her ideals. She was of a social nature and had a large circle of friends. She will be greatly missed, especially in her own neighborhood. Those who remain to mourn her loss are: Three sisters, Mrs. George Fleming and Mrs. George Delbridge of DeKalb and Mrs. Elida Shambo of Aurora: one daughter, Mrs. Henry Heeg of Sandwich; three sons, Allie and Bert of Lee, and Charles of Baildon, Canada; three brothers, R. E. Colby of Lee, Sherman Colby of Shabbona, and Edwin Colby of Milan; also ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren survive her. Mrs. Cofield passed away Tuesday evening, June 16, at 6:30 P.M., 1937, at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 16 days. Services were held at one and one-thirty respectively in the home and church, the pastor, F. K. Rich officiating. Many and beautiful bouquets showed something of the love and sympathy relatives and friends had for her. Burial was in Rosehill cemetery beside her husband who died 24 years ago. A Kindly Word from her Pastor Not only will the community miss our departed friend but the church as well. From the time of our coming to Lee seven years ago to the time of her departure she was ever the same in her attitude toward her pastor and church. It was, therefore, a privilege to be with her, even to the last, and learn from her something of the secret that was responsible for her faith, fortitude, and hope in God. It was because she had long ago learned the lesson of trust in her heavenly Father. And now that she was crossing over the last milestone she placed her feet firmly upon the threshold of the eternal with the same faith and inward peace that characterized her all along the pathway while she lived and loved and worked with us in the various activities of the church. No wonder she asked as the text for today the one I shall use shortly. If her suffering and disappointments were great, her joys were even greater, for had not God given her a long life, a large family to comfort her, and a fellowship with God, that recompensed her for any losses or sorrows that she might have had? True, the past year has been one of suffering, but it also caused her to deepen her faith in God and in her religious convictions that grew stronger until the very last. And now our fellowship with her has been changed; hers is a fellowship with the God whom she loved and loved ones who preceded her to that better land. For us, moreover, her life and example will remain a constant inspiration, for she is one of our very few whom we might justly call Mother of Israel, Saint, and Christian. Her life in the body has gone out but her spirit shines in upon us as we remember her for what she was, a disciple of the Lord, Steadfast, true and triumphant. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the many friends and neighbors for their acts of kindness and sympathy during the long illness and recent death of our beloved Mother. Crystal Lake Herald Crystal Lake, Illinois (McHenry County) Thursday, November 23, 1916 HOMAGE TO PIONEER Many Pay Last Respects To Departed Citizen MOURN AT BIER OF O. C. COLBY Funeral Largely Attended, Many Com- ing From a Distance - Comforting Words by Rev. Grose Funeral services for our esteemed citizen, Ora C. Colby, were held in the Methodist Episcopal church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and were largely attended, many from other towns being present to pay their last respects to a man whose life was a splendid story of commercial achievements coupled with enthusiastic and helpful work in the service of church and community, and loving devotedness to his wife and family. The words of Rev. Wm. E. Grose, who officiated, were most comforting and full of the loving sympathy and kindliness that brings consolation to the bereaved ones. By request two selections, "Waiting and Watching For Me," and "It Is Well With My Soul," were sung by Dr. H. Macon Fay and John Walkup, who also sang as their own selection, "Tarry With Me." Ora C. Colby was born in Danville, Vt., Dec. 8, 1837. At the age of 3 he was brought by his parents to McHenry county, Ill., where, with the exception of the ten years between 1867 and 1877, he had been a resident to the time of his departure from this life, which occurred at his late home Thursday, Nov. 16, 1916. He was nearing his seventy-ninth birthday. Surrounded by brother, wife, one daughter and two sons, he passed peacefully away, Thus closes a life of unusual activity, which began with the handicap of a serious affliction in early youth, which caused his parents and friends to fear for his life. But a sturdy spirit, indomitable will and a clean life overcame the obstacle, and he lived to achieve a competence for himself and family, an honored name in the commercial world and a place in community and church affairs that has been wide-reaching in its influence. He was married at Wilmot, Wis., June 12, 1864, to Emma E. Colby. Seven children were born to them, six of whom survive, one daughter having died in early youth. The remaining six children - Bert W. of Loyal, Wis., Carl O. of Pittsville, Wis., Earl H. of Ridgefield, Ill., E. C. of Crystal Lake, Mrs. R. Pryor of Wauconda and Mrs. Lulu Sherburne of Crystal Lake - were all present at the funeral services. In addition to the children here named there are ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One brother, John Colby of Clifton, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Sherburne of McHenry, survive him, and were also present. By his death goes out from our midst a notable character, whose activities were wide-reaching, and numerous. An early settler, an old-time merchant and valuable citizen. In early life he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and for more than half a century was zealous in its cause. When the present church was built in Crystal Lake he was one of the trustees, and gave largely of time and money for its erection. His commercial activities were numerous and far-reaching, beginning at McHenry, Ill., and from there reaching out to Saybrook and Gibson City, Ill., thence to Neosha, Mo., afterwards at Granby, Mo., then back to Crystal Lake. Using his home town as a center, he again reached out to Lake Geneva, Ill., and Mason City, Ia., and other points in Wisconsin, carrying on real estate and mercantile interests with the mind and hand of a master of affairs. Such, briefly told, are a very few of the accomplishments of only one of the pioneers who saw the large possiblities of this splendid section of the middle west, and with broad vision and splendid energy, worked out for themselves and posterity a heritage that is rich in resources and possibilities for the future. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in Union cemetery. Those from out of town who attended the services Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Colby and sons James and Raymond of Loyal, Wis., Miss Florence Colby of Oshkosh, Wis., Carl Colby of Pittsville, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Earl Colby of Ridgefield, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pryor of Wauconda, John Colby of Clifton, Ill., Mrs. Sarah Sherburne and Miss Ann Sherburne of McHenry, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Harrison of Ringwood, Charles Colby and Mrs. M.
