Robert attended New London Academy, now Colby Junior College, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1845, studied law with Ira Perley in Concord, and in 1849 entered into partnership with W. H. L. Smith, of Boston, and member of the Massachusetts Legislature. Their card read: "Smith and Colby, Attorneys and Counselors at Law, No. 47 Court Street, Boston. W. H. L. Smith, Commissioner for Vermont and Louisiana. Robert Colby, Commissioner for New York, New Hampshire and Michigan." He moved to New York in 1853, and after practicing his profession for some time, he gave up the law to become a member of the firm of James B. Colgate & Company and subsequently became a member of the New York Stock Exchange. He was connected with the Colgate Mission, a mission befriending children of the "East Side" in East 20th Street, New York. During the Civil War Robert Colby, although he did not go to the front, was a very active behind the lines in his country's service. He was for many years a member of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church.

In WWII he was in the Navy and served on the submarine USS Seahorse. After the War he returned to Beloit and moved to Sacramento in 1952.
He was a retail meat cutter and retired in 1980. He D:13 May 1983, in Sacamento, services 18 May 1983, with Bur:Sacramento Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Holly Veterans.
Surviving are his wife Leona, two daughters: Laura Marie Axberg and Julia Fritts, one son Larry Michiel, three grand children, his mother, Nellie Colby of Beloit, his brothers and sisters; Wilmer of Council Grove, Jim and George Colby and Bernice Hull of Beloit, Bill Colby of Tacoma, WA, Albert Colby of Eugene, OR, Louise Higgins of Rapid City, SD and Betty Fuller of Hot Springs, AR. Robert William Colby of Woodland died Wednesday, May 3 at age 85.
Mr. Colby was born Nov. 4, 1920 in Tallula, Ill. to Robert L.W. and Trula Prescott Colby. He had been a Yolo County resident for 27 years. He graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from University of Illinois; in 1947 with a Master of Science in Animal Science and in 1949 with a Ph.D. in Animal Science, both from Washington State. From 1951 to 1985, he was a product development manager with Dow Chemical.
Survivors include Mr. Colby's wife of 59 years, Delpha Colby; his daughter, Delores McQuestion of Albuquerque, N.M.; his son, Lyle Broemeling of Houston; his grandchildren, Keith Myers of Las Lunas, N.M., Lee McQuestion of Detroit, Rebecca Myers of Reedsport, Ore. and Karen Dombowsky of Centennial, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family requests memorials in Mr. Colby's name be directed to Sutter Davis Hospital Foundation, 2000 Sutter Place, Davis, 95616; or St. John's Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Ave., Woodland, 95695.
Services: A celebration of Mr. Colby's life is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9 at the meditation gardens at Sutter Davis Hospital, 2000 Sutter Place, Davis. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
