WASHINGTON -- Walter P. Colby, 78, of 4114 Stonewood Drive, Brandon, Fla., formerly of Washington, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 1996, at his residence.
Born Aug. 14, 1917, in McHenry to Raymond and Esther Sattem Colby, he married Lillian V. Holmes on Feb. 27, 1929, in Sycamore. She survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Norman of Brandon, Chester of Washington, Dale of Morton and Allan of St. Louis; one daughter, Beverly Nichols of Washington; three brothers, Chester of Round Lake, George of La Valle, Wis., and Raymond of Yakima, Wash.; two sisters, Shirley Ziegenbein of Burnsville, Minn., and Esther Siebel of Woodstock; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. One son, Wayne, and one sister preceded him in death.
He was a professional mechanic for 35 years, retiring from Jim Smith Datsun in 1983. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Brandon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. The Rev. Keith Thibo will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
Memorials may be made to Bible Tracts Inc. in Normal or to Bayview Baptist Church in Washington.

Scott took up his farm from the government while it was wilderness. He cleared the land and built his original house. Scott and Betsy located on a piece of land covered with timber. It was hard work but he cleared away the forest and built a farm. The area they lived in was called north Rawsonville, Ypsilanti Township.

Walter W. Colby, died suddenly at his home on Assembly street Saturday evening, July 30th. He had been in failing health for over a year and had suffered numerous heart attacks recently. He married Miss Esther Mary Tavernier of Chateaugay 53 years ago last January and they came to this village 51 years ago and lived in the same house continuously since that time. To them were born nine children: Frank H. of Massena; Ross of Norfolk; Miss Clara of Boston; Mrs. Grace Martin of Norfolk; Fredie of Norfolk; Silas R., Leon and Lena Cummings of this village and Willie who died at the age of 18. There are also eighteen grandchildren: Freeman, Mary, Jesse, Gertrude and Silas R. children of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Colby; Walter, Kenneth and William, children of Ross Colby; Earl, Paul and Pauline, children of Mr. and Mrs. Fredie Colby; Pearl and Percy Colby, children of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Colby and Eugene Harry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cummings. The two great grandchildren are June C. Bogart and Warren Colby, children of Mary Colby Bogart and husband and Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Colby. He also leaves one brother, Henry Colby of this village. Mr. Colby was the son of Walter C. (note: his father is Silas) and Julia Peck Colby of Chateaugay. He worked at his trade of paper hanger and painting for a while after coming to this village and then began work in what is now "The Agricultural Works" being employed there until poor health, caused him to retire about two two years ago. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Patrick's R. C church of which he was a faithful member. A requiem, high mass was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. C J. Crowley, burial in St. Patrick's R. C. cemetery beside his son, Willie.

Walter W. Colby, son of Spencer and Josephine Colby was born at Mouse River, Maine, April 28, 1861 and departed this life September 28th, 1931, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. June Colby Nelson of Tonawanda, New York. Mr. Colby attained the age of 70 years and 5 months.
He was united in marriage with Minnie M. Cudney, (deceased) March 21, 1888. To this union were born two sons, Harry, who died in infancy; Irvin of San Diego, California, five daughters, Mrs. George B. "Weed and Mrs. R. J. Nelson of Tonawanda, New York; Mrs. Stanley M. Knapp and Miss Josephine Colby of Buffalo, New York and Mrs. Carl O. Goll of Blue Hill, Nebraska.
Mr. Colby is survived by three brothers, two sisters and six grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends in New York and Nebraska.
For the past seven years Mr. Colby has been in the employ of the Remington Road Company of Tonawanda, New York.
He was a member of the United Brethren church of Marquette, Nebraska for many years.
The last rites were held from the United Brethren church of Marquette, Nebraska, Rev. Walter S. Henry, former pastor officiating.
