Willard P. Colby, 1916 – 1995
Willard P. Colby, 87, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1995 at the Norway Convalescent Center. He was a resident of Andover for many years and was formerly of Bath and Brunswick.
He was born in Bath on April 30, 1916, son of Willard M. and Nellie (Cressey) Colby. He had attended schools in Bath and Brunswick. During World War II he served overseas as a Tech. 4 with the U.S. Army. He worked for Bath Iron Works for over 40 years as a plumber in the maintenance department until retirement in 1981. He had attended the Andover First Congregational Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bobby (Judith) Richardson of Andover; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Meader & Son Funeral Home with Pastor Jane Rich officiating. Interment will be Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, in the spring. Those who desire, please contribute in his memory to the Andover Rescue, c/o Ken Dixon, Andover, 04216.

William Colby of Hannibal, New York, deposed, 20 Apr 1818, that he enlisted, November 1776, for three years, and served under Captain James Carr, Colonel Hale's regiment in the New Hampshire Line, and continued to serve until the winter of 1782-18, when he was attached to a company under Captain Senter, and served until July 1783, when he was discharge at New Windsor, New York. In 1819, William Colby was of Grandby, Oswego County, New York. He deposed, 19 September 1820, as a farmer, of Grandby, New York, aged 60 years: that he had received a wound in the service. Burial: Lewis Cemetery, Oswego County, New York.

William Colby, the son of William Colby and Mary Darling Hildreth, was born in Hopkinton, November 30, 1809. His father lived on Beach Hill, on the westerly slope, where now lives Messrs. Waldron and Gleason. William Colby being born in the old militia days, was in child-hood and youth subject to all the exciting influences to which the younger generation of his time paid specially enthusiastic attention. Young Colby doubtless was unusually impressed by frequent display of soldiery of his early years. Becoming of military age, and legally competent to train, he rose to be one of the most notable martial characters of his native town. He was at one time Captain of the Hopkinton Rifles, and afterwards commander of the Coldwater Phalanx, both military companies independently organized and thoroughly uniformed. He was also once colonel of the 40th Regiment of New Hampshire militia. Colonel Colby was also one of the original Amoskeag Veterans. He was a very efficient officer of drill, perhaps the best the town has ever raised. When the arrangements were made for and old-fashioned training on the Fourth of July, 1881, Col. William Colby was selected commander of the day, and on the attempted assassination of the President, the proposes training being suspended, he was chosen one of the committee of citizens to arrange for observances in accordance with the ultimate facts in the presidents case. During most of Colonel Colby's life, he was a Hopkinton farmer. He was once master of a river boat plying in the carrying trade between Concord and Boston before the time of the railroads, and when canals were in operation in the State of Massachusetts, and later a freight conductor on the Boston and Providence Railroad. He was at one time a Steward in the Asylum for the insane at Concord, and a number of years a deputy sheriff of Merrimack County. He was twice doorkeeper of the state senate.
In 1837, July 9, William Colby married Eliza Barret, daughter of Elezer Barret and Olive Emerson, of Nashua. They had no children.
Residing in Hopkinton many years previously to his death, Col. Colby eventually moved from Beach Hill to the village, where his widow now resides, and where he died September 4, 1881. His funeral occurred on the sixth day of the month, being remarkable on account of it's similarity to the dark day of May 19, 1780. He was buried from St Andrew's Episcopal Church, which was lighted for the funeral service.

He was engaged in cutting up some wood on the shore near his home at the upper end of Wesport, opposite this town, when the axe slipped and severed an artery in his right leg near the ankle, causing death before medical assistance could be secured. He was alone at the time and started for the house but fainted and fell before reaching it.
He was buried after 18 JAN 1875 in the Colby Cemetery at Westport, Lincoln County, Maine He has Ancestral File Number 12M7-LCG. He has more notes. The Cruse of the Franklin.
The Franklin, a vessel of 67 tons, owned by William P. Lennox of Wiscasset, and Alfred Lennox, employed as a coaster between Boston and Wiscasset, had, in the spring of 1872, the following perilous experience:
The captain was William Colby, and the other three men, James Colby, Atwell Smith and Charles West, were all of this town.
"On Sunday morning, March 3rd, she set sail from Boston, bound for Wiscasset, and laden with several hundred bushels of corn, seventy-five barrels of flour and a general cargo, the total valued at about $4,000.
"When off Cape Elizabeth, on the night of the 4th, a severe gale was encountered, that carried away the jib halyard and jib boom. The storm increased in fury, and the crew had to keep her off in order to get the boom in. During the night of the 4th and morning of the 5th, the gale was very high, but shortly after daylight it was succeeded by thick weather. On Thursday evening, the bowsprit, foresail, both jibs and one anchor were lost. On Wednesday morning, when the vessel was about twenty miles from Cape Elizabeth, the main throat halyards were cut away, and a portion of her mainmast saved. The gale continued, and the vessel scudded before it until Saturday noon, shipping water continually, and this froze so thickly that her waist was quickly filled with ice. On Saturday afternoon, the gale abating somewhat, a preventer stay was rigged to set the jib, and no event of interest occurred during the night. On Sunday, the 10th, the captain found himself in the afternoon off Georgian Shoals, about sixty miles north east of Cape Cod. On Monday the wind was northeast, and as the storm had abated slightly Captain Colby rigged a piece of the mainsail, and under a severe snow storm ran until eight o'clock A.M. Tuesday. On Wednesday they ran under bare poles before the gale, and on Thursday night, with the wind southeast, and remained on that course until Saturday, the 15th. On Sunday morning the Franklin ran into a snow storm and wind from the east, and again headed for the coast. The wind veered again during the night to the northwest, and again the vessel was driven to sea, being unable to make sufficient sail to reach port. On Tuesday the gale had somewhat moderated, and the vessel, which was filled with ice, lay to until Wednesday morning, when the wind again went to the southwest and drove the vessel shoreward. All that day, and on Thursday and Friday, the craft was at the mercy of the gale. On Saturday a brief calm followed, and the captain again headed for the coast, but the wind giving out, he lay to until Monday morning.
"On Tuesday, the vessel was headed in a northerly direction in the hope of sighting land, or encountering a vessel, and this course was kept until Thursday morning, when the spoke an unknown vessel, from Boston to Baltimore, which supplied them with wood and water, and, assuring Capt. Colby that if he would keep on that course he would soon meet the New York pilot boats, parted company with the schooner. The prediction of the unknown captain proved true.
"Captain Colby reports that he has been forty-five years engaged as a coaster between Wiscasset and Boston and in voyages across the Atlantic, and never has he encountered such a severe and continuous gale as the one from which he was so miraculously saved by the promptness of the New York pilots.
"Captain Colby had no nautical instruments on the vessel, with the exception of a compass, and if he had had them they would have been useless, as none of the crew understood navigation."
