He died in 1911. He was in the Civil War, and captain in the 1st Regiment of colored soldiers (Mass 55th); promoted to that office (from rank as private, for which enlisted, Aug 4, 1862), in consideration of his saving the life of Col. Hartwell, by carrying him off the field when wounded. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his Civil War heroism of rescuing his Colonel under fire. He was finally awarded the Medal of Honor in 1895. Has since been a clerk in the Custom House, Boston.
