Entered Middlebury Academy, N.Y.,1834; entered the Freshman Class of Mad ison University, April, 1837; graduated June 10, 1840. Was ordained as a Baptist minister i n the Autumn of 1840, and continued to preach until April, 1880, when loss of sight in one ey e forbade furter pblic labor. " James S. Ladd, the oldest retail grocer in the city of Buffalo, died at his home, No. 29 7 West Utica street, yesterday afternoon of heart disease. He was 77 years old and is survive d by his wife, Abbie Basset(sic) Ladd, and four sons, Arthur B.,Carlton E.,Charles C., and Wa lter M. Ladd, all of Buffalo.
Mr. Ladd was born in Le Roy and came to this city in 1852. He became connected with the gr ocery firm and in the year 1858 went into business for himself on Main street, where the Elli cott Square now stands, Later he moved to the corner of Huron and Main streets, and until th e year 1904, when he moved to the corner of Pearl and Chippewa streets, he maintained a stor e on Main Street. He retired from active business in 1904. Mr. Ladd was prominent in the affa irs of the Retail Grocers' Association.
Mr. Ladd was a member of the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be hel d from the family residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock and interment will be at Forest L awn Cemetery."

All of which is not relevant now that we know the Ladds came from Caledonia County in Vermont !!! He is found in both the 1800 and 1790 census. It is worthwhile to note that Caledonia Cou nty used to be part of Orange County prior to 1800!!! 1772 list of heads of households does n ot show John in St. Johnsbury Twp. where he resides in 1790 and 1800. in the 1800 census hi s household consists of 1 FWM under 10 (Thomas Colby Ladd would be 4 or 5 months old); 2 FW M between 10 and 16;3FWM between 16 and 26;1FWM over 45;1FWF under 10 and finally 1 FWF ove r 45. Certainly establishes John's birthdate as at least prior to 1755!!! The 1790 census sho ws 2 FWM over 16;2 FWM under 16 and 3 FWF.

As a matter of interest there is an Ezekel Colby in St. Johnsbury in 1790 with himself an d 2 FWFs. There are also several Colbys in Newbury Town, Orange County.
The final difinitive information comes from Warren Ladd's 1890 compilation of the Ladd Families which gives us birthdate and place. NH not Vermont!!!!

The birthplace is listed as Sutton, Caledonia Cty, NY? There is no Caledonia county in NY bu t there is a town of that name about 10 miles east of LeRoy. This could also be Sutton stree t in Caledonia as there is no Sutton county in NY.

Agnes Walker,age 39, ostensibly Lucy's sister is living with the family in 1850.
Research at New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston yielded that Sutton is in Cal edonia County Vermont which is also cofirmed by later census records. Warren Ladd's 1890 wor k on the Ladd Family establishes the lineage.
A directory for Genessee County in 1870 which is similar to the modern business to business y ellow pages has the listing for Thomas Colby Ladds home and a half page advertisement for hi s carriage building business which he is operating with his eldest son Miles.
