COLBY, Elizabeth Mast
Beloved companion, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, died Saturday March 6, 2010 at the age of 94. Elizabeth was a world traveler who loved politics, the arts, card games, lively conversation and great parties.

Elizabeth was born on May 19, 1915 in the small farming town of Grundy Center, Iowa.

She received her bachelors degree from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, and her masters degree from Northwestern University in 1939.

She met Julian Colby in a college drama class. They fell in love and after a long courtship they married in 1940. Prior to her marriage Elizabeth worked as a teacher. During WWII, she traveled with Julian from one Army base to another before he was shipped overseas.

In 1948 they moved to Sacramento with their two children where Julian began his thirty-year career as a copy editor for The Sacramento Bee. They had two more children and Elizabeth stayed home to care for them until she returned to the workforce in 1961 as a guidance counselor at Mira Loma High School. She loved her career working with teens and was well respected by both students and fellow faculty.

She retired in 1980. After her retirement she volunteered countless hours to her favorite causes such as Planned Parenthood and Kaiser Permanente hospitals. Elizabeth was also a very fine piano player and continued piano lessons well into her 80s. Elizabeth was an avid traveler. During their fifty-three year marriage, she and Julian visited countries all over the world together and they regularly hosted dinners for visitors to the U.S. through their association with People to People. In the years following Julian's death in 1993, Elizabeth found a new life partner in Henry Stanton. They had been family friends for years and after both their spouses died, their friendship blossomed into a true and lasting love affair. She and Henry loved to travel as well and took several European trips together. On the morning of September 11, 2001 they were on a flight home from Europe when their plane was diverted back to Switzerland. Elizabeth and Henry enjoyed many happy years together and both felt fortunate to have found true love a second time. Elizabeth is survived by her companion, Henry Stanton; her brother, Boyd Mast of Edina, MN; her four children, Jim and wife, Jeri of Victoria, British Columbia; Mary and husband Larry of San Clemente, CA; Herrick and wife Christine of Kona, HI; and Peter and wife Cathy of Fullerton, CA; as well as by her nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but those who knew and loved her will always remember her witty, lively, compassionate personality and her ever-present smile.
