Last Will and Testament of Aaron Powers:
This last Will and Testament of Aaron Powers of Warren County and State of Illinois. I, Aaron Powers being of sound mind do make and publish this my last will and Testament, in manner as follows:
First It is my will that my Son in law, A.G. Pearce be the Executor of this my will.
Second It is my will that all sums of money that I have paid to any or either of my children heretofore as I may hereafter make a fair and true statement of the amount and to whom paid or of all sums that I may after the date of this will pay to any of my children as may be shown by receipts, the sum shall be reckoned as a part of each recipients share as money then on hand, so that there may be an equalizing in the final division of my property.
I, Aaron Powers have paid to my son Joseph C. Powers ($750.00) Seven hundred and fifty dollars, and I have paid to my son John M. $284 Two hundred and Eighty four Dollars, and I have paid to Benjamin A. $735 Seven Hundred and Thirty five Dollars, and I have paid to Daniel D. $365 Three Hundred and Sixty five Dollars, to my Daughter Eliza $93 Ninety three Dollars, I have paid to my son Colby deceased $144, One Hundred and forty four Dollars and to be a part of my Grand son James share - I have paid to my son Aaron deceased $300 Three Hundred Dollars and to be a part of his children's shares - I have paid by Solon deceased $300 Three Hundred Dollars and to be a part or all his two childrens shares. I have paid to Martha Jane my daughter deceased $125 One Hundred and Twenty five Dollars, and to be reckoned in the account of her Daughter Eliza Janes portion.
Third It is my will that my Executor sell at publick sale so soon as may be after my decease a all my Estate real and personal of which I shall be possessed and on such terms of payment as may be most advisable and my Executor shall dispose of the proceeds of said Sale when collected to paying expense debts and legacies hereinafter named.
It is my will that one third the money arising from the Sale of my property be put at interest during the life time of my wife and she to recover the annual interest after meeting the expense of its supervision and after her death the said one third to be divided among my children and grand children as the other two thirds shall hereafter be directed to de divided.
It is my will that the remaining two thirds of my Estate be divided among my children and grand children as follows: I give unto my son Joseph C., John M., Benjamin A., Daniel D. Powers my four sons and Eliza Pearce and Mary G. Starr my two daughters equal shares of my estate and to their heirs and assigns. And to my daughter Phebe I give or order to be put at interest for her support during her life a sum equal to three times that given to either of my six children first named and at her death to be divided as my other property. And to the Children of my son Aaron dec'd, and to the children of my son Solon deceased, and to the child of my son Colby deceased, and to the child of my daughter Martha Jane deceased, I give each child (being my grand children) a sum equal to one sixth (1/6) of either or anyone of my six children first named, making the portion of each of these my grand children equal to one sixth of Joseph C. Powers.

Aaron Powers.
Aaron Powers was born in the state of Connecticut, February 1, 1782. He was a son of Nicholas and Phebe Powers. He left his native state, in 1805, and went to North Bend, Ohio, where he was married to Martha Colby. She was born in New Hampshire, April 3,1787. She came with her parents to North Bend, Ohio, in 1805. They moved into a stone house where they kept hotel, many distinguished men stopping with them, among them William H. Harrison who boarded with them for some time. Martha Colby’s mother was a Williams. Her brother, William Williams was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It is said of Aaron Powers that he attended school but very little. Certain it is that he acquired a considerable education. This he did by hard study, buying his own books. He was noted for his great memory and few excelled him as a grammarian in his day. Mr. Powers taught school at North Bend, Ohio, for five years. He taught his first term for ten dollars, but received fifteen dollars for each term thereafter. He entered one hundred and twenty-five acres of land in Butler county, Ohio, and moved there in 1811, where he resided until 1839, when he moved to Greenbush, Illinois. He bought a farm on section seventeen, of Abram Johnson, where he resided up to the time of his death. Mr. Powers was a Methodist preacher and preached his first sermon here about one week after his arrival. This meeting was held in a log schoolhouse a short distance from his residence, about ten persons gathering to hear him. About the time he was ready to begin service, Sammy Brown appeared. He came with his wife in a wagon from Oquawka, where he then resided. Mr. Brown had formerly lived in Ohio, where he was a member of the same conference with Mr. Powers. They were rejoiced to see each other.

Aaron, who married Mary Ricard. He died at White Hall, in Green county, Illinois.
Joseph C., married Nancy Acre in Butler county, Ohio. He died January 11, 1867, at the age of 57 years. His wife died January 25, 1864.
Clarissa, who died when she was only two or three years old.
Solon, married Mary Morris. He died at Edwardsville, Illinois, in 1854.
Milton, married Martha Orley; supposed to have died in California.
Benjamin Abbot, married Rachel Carmack. He went to California, in 1861, where he died in 1891. Eliza, married A. G. Pearce. She died January 22, 1896, at the age of 77 years. He died October 19, 1895, at the age of 79 years.
Martha, married William Garrett. She died, in 1844, and was buried at Knoxville, Illinois.
Colby and Phebe were twins. Colby married Ann Duke. She came from England. She died in 1844. Colby afterwards married Louisa Nelson, in Michigan. He died in Kansas, in 1903.
James, who was found dead in his bed on the morning of October 26, 1841. He was sixteen years old.
Mary G., married Stephen W. Starr, in 1850. He died August 16, 1874, at the age of 64 years.
Daniel Davidson, married Mary Damitz. Both died in Anderson county, Kansas.
In politics Aaron Powers was a democrat up to the time Abraham Lincoln received his first nomination for president; afterwards, a republican. In religion he was first a Methodist; he afterwards joined the Mormons; becoming dissatisfied with the Mormons, he joined the Missionary Baptists and remained a member of that denomination up to the time of his death, which occurred March 26, 1862. His wife Martha died May 12, 1861, at the age of 74 years.

"On July 1, 1727, Samuel Chandler, Jacob Wright and many others, soldiers or lawful representatives of such as were in the Narraganset Expedition of 1675, petitioned for land. They represented that in 1686, two townships were granted to them in the Nipmug county, which were not settled. They desired that a like grant might be renewed, which was done the following year, though not in the same location. Thomas Hunt and others, petitioned General Court, Feb. 17, 1731, that, as the preceding grant was insufficient for all the Narraganset claimaints, they may have some additional townships. The Legislature ordered that one township should be allowed for every 120 of such individuals. The House sent a message to the Council, Jan. 19, 1732, on this subject. It was as follows: 'Proclaimation was made to them, when mustered on Dedham Plain, whence they began their march' (Rev. Peter Hobart's diary gives the date of this marching from Dedham, Dec. 9, 1675), 'that if they played the man, took the fort, and drove the enemy out of the Narraganset country, which was their great seat, they should have a gratuity in land, besides their wages.' Such a victory was achieved. 'And as the condition has been performed, certainly the promise, in all equity and justice ought to be fulfilled. And if we consider the difficulties these brave men went through in storming the fort in the depth of winter, and the pinching wants they afterwards underwent in pursuing the Indians that escaped, through a hideous wilderness, formerly known throughout New England to this day, by the name of the hungry march, and if we further consider, that until this brave, though small army, thus played the man, the whole country was filled with distress and fear, and we trembled in this capital, Boston itself, and that to the goodness of God to this army, we owe our fathers and our own safety and estates'--they ought to have their claim."
