HENRY PRESBY FARM Westboro Corner

There seems to be no certainty as to who built the house that Henry Presby owned in Wookchuck Hollow, Henniker, but William Dunlap appears to have been the first settler on the farm. He probably lived in a log cabin.

In 1783, Thaddeus Gibson settled on the farm with his family and probably built the house. Nearly the entire portion of the township above him was then a wilderness. He did much toward bringing that portion of the town into fruitful fields. He died February 23, 1834. His daughter Polly, was born in 1780 and married John Whitcomb January 21, 1808. She died May 3, 1865.

Sometime in the 1800s Nahum Colby bought the place and lived there until he died in 1882. An auction was held after Nahum's death to settle the estate and Henry Presby and his brother-in-law, Ernest Colby, bought the farm from Nahum;s widow, Sarah, on December 8, 1883 for $2200. They borrowed $1000 from Alonzo Tuttle to make the down payment. They gave Sarah E Colby a first mortgage and Alonzo Tuttle a second mortgage. Presby mortgaged the J Ward farm in Bradford where he had been living, 8 head of cattle and one horse. Ernest mortgaged the Robert Colby place in Bradford, 8 head of cattle and a horse.

Some people doubted if Presby and Colby could ever pay for the farm. They didn't reckon with the redoubtable Lizzie who ranged the hills to pick raspberries, blackberries and blueberries to pay the interest while Henry and Ernest grew the calves into cows and steers. When the herd became big enough, they held an auction and sold off some of the stock and then started over again. The chestnut trees were a source of revenue. There were two immense trees - five feet in diameter at the butt - and many smaller but good bearing trees on the farm. Bushels of chestnuts were picked up and sold. Lizzie made butter and sold it and even the bees helped out by making honey which was also sold. The farm was eventually paid for in full.

When Presby and Colby bought the place, the Presby s - Henry, Lizzie, Eva Lula, Oscar and Myron, settled in the lower house where Nahum Colby and his family had lived. There was another house nearer the main road, called the "upper house". This had been built on the so-called Patten place for James Colby, youngest son of Levi , there at the time Nahum owned the farm. At one time Lewis bought the farm from for $6000 but sold it back to Nahum. Lewis lived in the upper house for a time. After the death of Thomas, his wife, The former Josephine Tuttle of Stoddard, and their two children, Everett N, and Mabel, moved to White River Junction, Vermont, where they had a millinery shop. Everett lived in Keene, NH and worked for a wholesale grocery firm.

Ernest Colby and his wife, Clara, lived in the upper house until the partnership ended and they moved to the Worcester Morrison farm on the Hillsboro road.

At one time, there was also a third house on the farm, probably erected in the early 1800s, across the brook from the lower house. This was occupied by Alanson Wood and his wife, Mary Colby, daughter of Silas and Hannah (Farrar) Colby. Wood died November 13, 1873 and his wife died May 13, 1865. Nothing remains of the house except a filled-in cellar hole.

On September 23, 1911, Lizzie Presby, Henry's wife, bid off the Alva Merrill farm on the old Henniker road and they moved there. In the meantime, Henry Presby had bought the Patten place for approximately $700 and gave it to his son Myron. He also bought the Ed Morgan place at The Oaks in Henniker for his daughter Eva Lula. Myron bought the home farm from his father and he and his family lived there until 1917 when they moved to the Alvah Merrill place to assist his father in running the farm.

For several years Fred Whitcomb and his wife, Jessie, rented the farm from Myron, but after the death of his wife, Fred went to Hillsboro to live with his sister and the farm was sold to Harold Ayer of Henniker. Mr Ayer and his family lived there for several years until Mr Ayer was killed by a falling tree. The farm was again sold and is presently owned by William Malek, (1976 & 1995), who has renovated the house considerably. While Ayer owned the place, he tore down the upper house and built a foundry on the site. At one time Elmer and Della Gould lived in the upper house.
