Census of 1845 shows...John BOVEE...had a horse mill.

In 1820, John Bovee, with his family, removed to Big Mound Prairie, and found here an organized Methodist socity, with regular circuit preaching at Hugh STEWART's...The early members were [the families of] STEWART, ROBINSON, GASTON, BOVEE and Andrew HALL. Rev. James A. ROBINSON was born here, and Rev. James M. MASSEY, step-son of BOVEE, grew to manhood in this settlement. In 1831, the preaching was removed to BOVEE's house, on the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 9, where it remained about five years, when it was again removed to the BOVEE Schoolhouse, southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 32, in Lamard Township, and became the headquarters for Methodism for many miles around. About 1859, as the membership had increased and the house would no longer answer the demands of the congregation, Mt. Olivet Church, a substantial log house was built about sixty rods west of this place, which amply serves the society at the present time. The cemetery is still near the schoolhouse.

James M. MASSEY's regular appointments, besides occasional preaching places, in 1843, were...BOVEE's...; involving not less than 300 miles travel each month.

In 1855, the members in the [Methodist] societies were...BOVEE's, 26...

Other settlers of the [Big Mound] township were Enoch NEVILLE, Andrew HALL, John BOVEE, Capt. John Clark, _________ ROBINSON, Daniel CLEVENGER, etc.

John BOVEE lived near the Lamard line, and had an early mill.

In Big Mound Township, one of the first mills built was BOVEE's and LIVERGOOD's. The latter gentleman was from some one of the Eastern States, and was termed a "Yankee". He finally sold out his mill and other belongings here and moved away. BOVEE was also an Eastern man, and of course a Yankee. He had a horse mill, which was one of the early institutions of the township.

Everette J. Filgate's book "The Bovee and Bovie Families in America" contains the following entry on Page 55:

(BF): MATHEUS BOVY, (Bovie) the son of Claus Bovy and Cornelia, was baptized 16 August 1725 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Albany, Albany County, New York. The witnesses for the baptism were Anth and Cath Bovy,[7] (paternal uncle & aunt). Matheus Bovie married Maria Kool (Polly) about 1754 possibly in Pompton Plains, Morris County, New Jersey. Maria Kool, the daughter of Jacob L. Cole and Sarah Davenport, was born about 1734 probably in Pompton Plains, Morris County, New Jersey. In the book Early Records of the town of Florida p111, \Oct 15, 1787, the (Mohawk district) commissioners, having viewed and found it necessary, laid out a road, beginning at Richard Van Veghten's fence at a small birch tree marked; from thence by marked trees to the lane between William Vintons on to Nicholas Spore, and thence along said lane to a large hemlock tree marked; from thence by marked trees to John Van Wormer's pasture, and along the creek to the outside of the pasture; from thence by marked trees to the old road marked out, thence along said road to the road come by Martin (Matheus) Bovee, and so ordered it to be recorded."

In 1790 Matthias Bovee, born prior to 1774; a male (Jacob), born prior to 1774; 2 females (probably Jacob's wife and daughter); a male, (John) born prior to 1774; and a male (Henry), born 1775-1790; were living in Mohawk, Montgomery County, New York. Matthias's son Nicholas Bovee lived near by as did Van Wormer, Van Veghten, Vinton and Spoor mentioned above.[20] This Mohawk, south of the river, was abolished in 1793 and was formed into the towns of Florida and Charleston. The present day Mohawk, north of the river, was formed from Johnstown 4 April 1837.[6] The statement of Nicholas Bovee in 1842 states Mathias Bovee late of the town of Florida, Montgomery County, New York. The children of Matheus Bovie and Maria (Polly) Kool were Cornelia, Sarah, Nicholas, Maria, Maria, Jacob, Abraham, John, and Henry. Lower Montville,
Morris County, New Jersey was first settled by families of the names of Davenport, Hyler, Parlaman, Gould, Kool, Eelsler, Millage, and Dod. Among the first was Humphrey Davenport who came from Kingston on the Hudson River and bought through Thomas Stevenson from the proprietors of West Jersey Tract of 750 acres of land. The allowance made in those days of ten acres to the hundred for roads would really make this tract contain 825 acres. The deed bears the date October 2nd 1714, and the survey as stated was made by virtue of a warrant in favor of Thomas Stevenson, approved by the council of proprietors in 1712.[62]
