Mrs. Nathalie Sedgwick Colby, novelist and former wife of Bainbridge Colby, who was Secretary of State in President Wison's Cabinet, died yesterday in the Harkness Pavilion at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Essayist, poet, a magazine writer of articles and short stories, Mrs. Colby was best known for her novels, of which she wrote five.

These were, in the words of a NEW YORK TIMES reviewer, "brilliant novels of manners," in which she dealt primarily with the frailties and falseness which she had found in the upper social stratum of American life. In her first two novels, "Green Forest," and "Black Stream," she directed wit and satire against the emptiness of New York society, and, according to the reviewer, "revealed a gift for separating the pseudo-aristocrat from the real."

Depicted Society in Capital

She followed her first two novels with "A Man Can Build a House" and "For Life." The latter, published in 1936, presented in a thoughtful study the collision of cultures in this country against the background of a peaceful New England village. A year later she issued "An American Life Coming Out." Her autobiography, "Remembering," appeared in the Fall of 1938, and included further satirical portrayals of high society, particularly in Washington, which she had known so well.

Mrs. Colby was born in this city on Feb. 4, 1875, a daughter of William Tucker Washburn and Katherine Sedgwick Washburn. At the age of 10, after her mother's death in Switzerland, she returned to the Old House in Stockbridge, Mass., and thereafter, until her marriage, was known by the surname of her mother's family, Sedgwick.

Nathalie Sedgwick fell in love at the age of 19 was a 23-year-old lawyer named Bainbridge Colby, who was then earning $12 a week. They were married in 1895 at Sedgwick House, Stockbridge, Mass. Mrs. Colby wrote of her husband that he wore "seven-year boots to success."

In 1928 Mr. Colby brought suit for divorce against his wife in Paris, charging that she had ridiculed him in books she wrote. The Versailles court refused to grant a decree on the ground that he had no real residence in France. A few months later Mrs. Colby established residence in Reno and obtained a divorce.

Supported Roosevelt in 1936

During the Presidential campaign of 1936, when Bainbridge Colby joined with Alfred E. Smith and other prominent Democrats in urging the Democratic part to refuse a second nomination to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mrs. Colby publicly avowed her warm admiration for Mr. Roosevelt. Announcing her active support of the President, she said:

"I believe in the statesmanship of President Roosevelt, and I believe he has the solid masonry of conviction under his performance."

Mrs. Colby was a member of the board of governors of P.E.N. Club. She also had membership in the Query and Cosmopolitan Clubs. She made her home at 169 East Seventy-eighth Street.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Frances Colby Rogers, Miss Nathalie Sedgwick Colby and Mrs. Katherine Sedgwick Delafield.

The funeral service will be private. Burial will take place Saturday in the Sedgwick family plot in Stockbridge.

She was also known as Nathalie D'Oremieulx Washburn.

Spouse: Bainbridge COLBY. Bainbridge COLBY and Nathalie SEDGWICK were married in 1895. They were divorced in 1928 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. Children were: Katherine Sedgwick COLBY, Nathalie Sedgwick COLBY, Frances Bainbridge COLBY.
