THOMAS J. SHARP, a highly respected farmer residing in section 13, township 34, range 20, in Hackberry township, Labette county, Kansas, is one of the pioneer settlers of the county. He was born in Macoupin county, Illinois, in 1849, and is a son of Madison Sharp, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume.

Thomas J. Sharp was reared in Illinois, until he reached the age of seventeen years, when he moved to Hunt county, Texas. In 1868, he moved to Neosho county, Kansas, and one year later to Labette county, where he took up the southwest quarter of section 7, township 34, range 20. This he greatly improved, and still owns the farm. In 1892, Mr. Sharp removed to the farm of his mother-in-law in Hackberry township. Her property consists of a half section, and is finely improved. This farm had been purchased by her husband from Mr. Peck. Mr. Sharp prefers and raises Shorthorn cattle and Poland-China hogs. He is very well informed on all agricultural matters, and uses many modern implements in tilling the soil.

Mr. Sharp was married in Labette county, to Harriet Snow, a daughter of Henry and Mary J. (Colby) Snow. Mr. Snow located in Labette county in 1868, and took up a claim adjoining Mr. Sharp's. He died there in 1873. Mrs. Snow married Mr. Houts in 1885, and he died several years later. Mrs. Houts now lives in Oswego. Mr. Sharp's wife was born in Macoupin county, Illinois, in 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Sharp have been blessed with seven children, namely: Henry, who is a buttermaker in a creamery at Matfield, Kansas, and who married a daughter of D. M. Miller, and has two children, - Myrl and Gladys; Isaac M., who is a stenographer for a hardware and implement company at Shreveport, Louisiana, and was formerly with Funkhouser, of West Plains, Missouri; May, who is cashier in C. M. Condon's store at Oswego; Maude; Lula; Ettie; and Bessie.

In politics, Mr. Sharp is a Republican. He has served in township offices and on the school board, in District No. 7. He was formerly a member of the Anti-Horsethief Association. Religiously, he attends the Methodist church at Oswego. Mr. Sharp is always all active supporter of all public enterprises, and is a useful and irreproachable citizen. Portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Sharp, engraved from photographs taken in July, 1901, accompany this sketch, and may be found on a page in proximity to this.

Thomas D. "Tom" SHARPE was born on 25 MAY 1940 in Red Bank, Lexington County, South Carolina. He died on 19 MAR 2009 at Sigurd, Sevier County, Utah.
A man of valor, Thomas D. 'Tom' Sharpe Sr, 68, passed away March 19, 2009, in an accident at his family residence. He was born May 25, 1940, in Red Bank, South Carolina to Eugene H. and Maude Taylor Sharpe. He married Jeanette 'Judy' Colby on January 25, 1960, after love at first sight and five days of courtship. Together they had five children, all of which he was pleased and deeply loved in his own way.

Staff Sgt. Sharpe had enlisted in the Army at the age of 16, serving for 22 years until his retirement in 1978. He willingly and proudly served his country; he was severely wounded in Viet Nam. Following his retirement, he settled with his family in Sigurd, Utah, where following the gentle fellowship of several ward members, he embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ and was sealed to his eternal companion on May 19, 1979, in the Manti Temple.

He quickly accepted his role as a leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many bishoprics and branch presidencies, most recently serving as Bishop of the Sigurd Ward. He also served for three and a half years as an ordinance worker in the Manti Temple. In 1995-96, Tom and Judy served in the Arcadia California Mission and were looking forward to their call to the South Carolina Columbia Mission and were to enter the MTC on April 6, 2009. Tom considered it his duty to serve others, those living and deceased, often without acknowledgment.

Tom was most happy when selling poppies for the V.F.W., serving with the Lion s Club, or his 40 years of service in the scouting program.

Teaching youth to be valiant, strong, true, and faithful, especially his grandchildren and scouts, was a constant objective. Many men can recollect scouting experiences with him. His scouting efforts were rewarded in 2003 when he was given the Silver Beaver Lifetime Scouting Merit award.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Judy, of Sigurd; children, Tom Jr. (Nadine) of Taylorsville, DeAnna Bradley of Monticello, Chip (Liz) of Blanding, Judy (Tony) Adame of Monticello, and Janey (Bill) Sharp of Linsey, CA; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Geneva S.
Shull, Sonny (Pat) and Nancy S Parker, all of South Carolina.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene H. Jr. and Clarence; sister, Betty; and a grandson, AJ.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sigurd LDS Ward Chapel. Friends and family may call at the Magleby Mortuary in Richfield on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the ward chapel in Sigurd on Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place in the Sigurd Cemetery where military rites will be provided by the V.F.W. Sevier Post #5050 and the Utah Honor Guard.

He will be greatly missed by all of us that called him husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle or friend.
