SMITH, David Hyrum

Birth: November 1844, Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois
Son of Joseph Smith, Jr., and Emma Hale
Married: Clara Charlotte Hartshorn, 10 May 1870
Death: August 1904
David Hyrum Smith was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 26 June 1861 (27 October 1862) at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, by John Shippy. He was confirmed by J. Smith and John Shippy. Upon David's baptism his older brother, Joseph Smith III, wrote: "He is to be one of our Church pillars, for the Spirit says so." In the April 1863 Saints' Herald, David wrote a poem to those Church members who wished him to be in the presidency of the Church. It read in part:
Joseph is the Chosen Prophet;
Well ordained in God's clear sight,
Should he loose it by transgression,
Alexander has the right.
Joseph, Alexander, David,
Three remaining pillars still;
Like the three remaining columns,
Of the Temple on the hill.
Joseph's star is full and shining;
Alexander's more than mine;
Mine is just below the mountain;
Bide its time and it will shine.
David was ordained an elder on 8 October 1863 at North Star, Iowa, by Joseph Smith III and William W. Blair. He was ordained a counselor to the president on 10 April 1873 and served in that position until 1885.
