FIRST SETTLERS IN THE DEAD RIVER AREA
CALEB and SALLY (THOMAS) STEVENS
Caleb STEVENS was born 7 (or 17) June, 1776, at Chester, New Hampshire, the son of Bartholomew and Mary (Dalton) Stevens. Caleb was 9 months old when his father, Bartholomew, enlisted in the Continental Army for three years during the Revolutionary War.
For some time after the Revolution, the Stevens family lived in the Goffstown and Bow area of New Hampshire. Bartholomew is listed in the1790 census at Bow with ten people in the household.
Caleb, and probably others of the family, came to Maine after 1790. The marriage intention of CALEB STEVENS of Brunswick and SARAH GREEN THOMAS, of Topsham was recorded at Topsham, Maine, on October 12, 1799, certified before November 17th.
Sarah "Sally" Green Thomas was born 15 February 1781 at Georgetown, Maine, the daughter of Consider and Sarah (Ripley) Thomas. Consider and his family came to Maine from Duxbury, Massachusetts, some time before Sally's birth in 1781. They were at Brunswick in 1790, as was his brother, Charles Thomas. Consider also had a twin brother, Prince Thomas. Consider drowned September 20, 1792, according to Topsham vital records. He is given as a "blacksmith" in the probate record.
In 1800 Caleb and Sally were living at Topsham near Sarah Thomas. Sally's widowed mother. By 1810 they had moved to No. 3, 1st Range, Million Acres, "So Called", (Kingsfield). A John Stevens was also living there, who may have been Caleb's brother. Some others listed on this census are Simeion Knapp, Paul, Steven and Samuel Wing, and Ebenezer Reed.
On 27 April 1813, Caleb enlisted in the army at Farmington in Captain Robert B. Douglas' Co., 34th Infantry, commanded by Joseph D. Learned, in the WAR WITH GREAT BRITIAN. The muster roll of 3 November 1813, shows that he was absent--left sick at Chateauguay. The Battle of Chateauguay was fought at the end of October, 1813; and was a part of an unsuccessful attempt by the U. S. Army to gain Montreal. Caleb was discharged 29April 1814 at Plattsburg, N. Y., after serving his one-year enlistment.
Included on the voting list at KINGFIELD for the year 1817, are the following: CALEB STEVENS, SAMUEL STEVENS, JEREMIAH STEVENS, and JOHN STEVENS. Caleb's father, BARTHOLOMEW, first applied for his pension from Kingfield in 1818, but in 1820, he and his wife, Mary, were living with their son, Jeremiah, in New Portland.
Times were hard during the early years at Kingfield. The following statement was published in several of H. E. Mitchell's REGISTERS: "Caleb Stevens went from Kingfield to Waterville and gave four days' work for a bushel of corn, and brought it all the way to his home on his shoulders to keep his children from starving."
The hard times may be why, in 1817, Caleb sold his property in Kingfield to James Dinsmore of Anson. The land is described in the deed: --a certain tract of land situated in Kingfield being the easterly half of a lot numbered six in the sixth range of lots in said Kingfield; one log house thereon, containing one hundred acres, be the same more or less.-- The price of the land was $150.00.
According to family legend, it was September 1818, when CALEB and SALLY and their nine children went to settle in the DEAD RIVER wilderness. He went in the interest of Gilman and Redington of Waterville, who had purchased a part of the Bath Academy Grant. They granted him 100 acres of land, two oxen, one year's supply of seed, and provisions for his family. It could be presumed that the STEVENS family lived in this remote part of Maine without neighbors for a year or more. Caleb Stevens does not appear in the 1820 census, which would indicate that the census enumerator did not go to the area. Abraham Reed, the second settler, is listed at Kingfield, unless he is another of the same name.
No record has been found of the conveyance of land from Gilman and Redington to Caleb. However, an 1833 deed in Oxford County, from Caleb Stevens of Dead River, so called, to Martin Mower of Starks, describes three parcels of land as follows:
The first lying on said Dead River, and extending up the Stratton Brook and lying on both sides of said Brook and containing ONE HUNDRED ACRES, it being the same lot Redington and Gilman gave me.
The second piece lying on both sides of said Stratton Brook and extending up said brook, to contain ONE HUNDRED and FIFTY ACRES, it being the same described in Redington and Gilman's bond to me, said lot to embrace the privilege on which the mills are not situated and to be located in the manner best to accommodate said privilege and the farm on which Henry Stevens now lives.
The third piece bounded on the east by the line of Bingham purchase, on the south bounded by the Bloomfield Academy Tract, on the west by the road running from McDaniels to said Dead River, and to run far enough north to contain TWO HUNDRED FIFTY ACRES, the north line to be parallel to the South line.
In 1830 Caleb was enumerated in the census of Oxford County, No. 2-4.Others living in the area were: Noah Staples, Daniel Maxwell, Bunker Clark, Asa Fletcher, Abraham Butterfield, Asa Richardson, Ebenezer Taylor, Abraham Reed, Nathaniel Allen, Jacob Leeman, Samuel Clark, John Darborn, Elias Benson, Isaac McDaniel, Reuben Bartlett, and Henry Stevens. In 1840 he is listed in Franklin County, Township 1, No. 4,with some of the same neighbors.
In November, 1850, Caleb applied for 160 acres bounty land for his service in the WAR OF 1812. His warrant was issued 13 Jun 1851. This warrant was sold in Lee County, Illinois, 30 November 1852. The warrant is signed by Caleb Stevens before a Justice of the Peace of Lee County. It seems highly improbable, but not impossible, that Caleb, at age 76,would go to Illinois and then return to Maine. It is known that his son, Prince Stevens, was in that county in 1855 when the state census was taken. The warrant was sold three or four times. Eventually it was sold in 1876 in partial payment of some land in Kansas by a man named Dennis Stone.
In regard to the 1833 deed by Caleb to Martin Mower, it appears to be in payment of a debt. A lease filed the same day has a clause stating that if he paid his note, the land would be recoveyed to him. He must have recovered at least a part of the land, as it seems to be the same description in an 1846 deed to James Rogers of Augusta. It is thought that some of his land stayed in the Stevens name, through Caleb D. Stevens, for many years. CALEB died August 28, 1854. He was a resident of Jackson Plantation at the time. His son, Jeremiah, was administrator of his estate.
SALLY died at Hebron, Maine, January 20, 1865. She probably was living with her daughter, Sarah (married Jacob Gurney), who was said to have lived in Hebron.

Caleb Stevens (1821-1904) Obituary

One of Stratton's oldest and most highly respected citizens, Caleb D. Stevens, passed away April 12th at the home of his son, Mark Stevens, after a long illness resulting from cancer. Mr Stevens was 83 years 2 months old. His parents came here on horsrback and for three years after their arrival his mother did not see the face of a white woman. He was the first white child born on the Dead River waters. The community has met with a great loss in the death of Mr Stevens, as he held the love and respect of all. For over sixty years he was a devout follower of Christ, and ever since its organization he had been a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Stratton He was a Justice of the Peace for years, somemnized many marriages and acted in the capacity of minister at over 200 funerals. He leaves four sons and three daughters who were all present at the funeral except for one daughter, who was ill at her home in Waterville. The funeral occurred at the M E Church April 14, followed by a service at the grave. The services were conducted by Rev. H H Richardson, pastor of the M E Church, who spoke very feelingly from the words found in Timothy 7-"I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith, I have finished my course." Mr Stevens was tenderly cared for by his two sons, Mark and Nial and his daughter-in-law, Mrs Mark Stevens, and his daughter Mrs Mae Small, who came from her home in Philadelphia to assist in these loving ministrations.
He was buried in the Stratton Lower Cemetery at Eustis, Franklin County, Maine Parents: Caleb STEVENS and Sarah Green THOMAS.
