Crystal Lake Herald Crystal Lake, Illinois (McHenry County) Thursday, January 7, 1937 Lydia Mann Colby Pioneer Resident, Is Buried Tuesday Was Born on Farm Near Barre- ville 79 Years Ago; Lived Here All Her Life Lydia Mann Colby died at the Sherman hospital Elgin, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 2, 1937. If she had lived until Monday, Jan. 11; she would have been 79 years old. Mrs. Colby's death is the first to be recorded here in the new year and was caused by pneumonia. Lydia Willard was the daughter of William and Mary Willard. She was born and spent the early years of her life on a farm near Barreville. Here she grew to womanhood and was married Oct. 28, 1885, to Fred L. Colby, who preceded her in death Jan. 31, 1925. To this union was born one son, Claude V., who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Colby lived on the Colby farm near Fox River until the year 1889 when they moved to McHenry, where Mr. Colby entered the implement business. They resided there only one year, after which they came to Crystal Lake, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Colby's first school days were spent in a cobble-stone school house near Prairie Grove. The seats in this building were home made benches. During the cold weather these benches were moved around the stove. Later a new school house was built at Barreville where she finished her education. She often told of attending New Year parties at the old Riverside House in McHenry and also dances in the ball room of the old Pingry home on the Town Line Road. Among the friends of her early days now living are: Ida Cornwell Huffman of Los Angeles, Cal.; Jim McWilliams of Belvidere; Andrew Henderson Sr., and Immogene Muntch of Chicago; Andrew Wingate and Margaret Wilcox of Elgin; Mrs. Anna Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Pingry, John McWhorter and Miss Minnie Colby of Crystal Lake. Later in life, Mr. and Mrs. Colby spent their winters either in California or Florida until his daeth after which she continued to reside in the home where they had lived together for so many happy years. Besides her son she is survived by three grandchildren Ethel Colby Larkin of Niles Center and Fred and Scott of Crystal Lake. She was always of a happy, pleasant disposition winning many friends through her loving personality. Her passing marks the last of the William R. Willard family. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 o'clock at Gilbert's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Miron A. Morrili in charge. Interment was in Union cemetery. Mrs. Colby was a member of the Crystal Lake Methodist Episcopal Church since a very young girl.
