Many thanks to David H. Streets for virtually all the information about the children of Joseph Owens and Sarah Coffey.

Bezaleel Owens and ?

Bezaleel Owens was born about 1721 at Baltimore, Maryland, possibly to Henry Owings and Helen Stinchcomb. He seems to have died in Rowan County, NC abt 1781. I don't know his wife's name. Some trees list her as Edith Foster, but Edith Foster married this Bazaleel's nephew, Bezaleel Owings (1766-1824) abt 1789. Unless there are two Edith Fosters and one was born early enough to bear a child in 1763, I doubt that is her name. The Bezaleel Owens who was b. 1721 likely had the following children with a currently unknown wife.

1. Eleanor Ellen Owens (b. abt 1763 at Baltimore, Maryland; d. Feb 1852 at Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee); abt 1785 she married Solomon Geron (1761-1841)
2. ?Samuel Owens (b. abt 1768; d. Apr 1811); m. Rebeckah (possibly McCrary) see below for more information about their family
3. Edward Owen or Owings (b. abt 1766; d. 23 Oct 1857 at Post Oak, Roane, TN); abt 1789 at Burke, NC, he married Edith Sumpter (1763-1845

Samuel Owens and Rebeckah (McCrary?)

Samuel Owens was born abt 1768 probably at Burke, North Carolina possibly to Bezaleel Owens and an unknown mother. I am not 100% sure of his parentage. He died Apr 1811 at Burke, North Carolina. In 1787 he married Rebeckah (last name might be McCrary and her father may have been Joseph McCrary)). She was born abt 1767 and d. before 1820. They had at least two children:

1. Joseph Owens (1787-1875) see below
2. Washington Simeon Owens, b. abt 1790 likely in Tennessee; d. Sept 1829 in Wayne County, KY. Married Anna Coffey (1792-1886, daughter of Reuben Coffey (1759-1842) and Mildred Millie Morris (1770-1842).

Sarah "Sally" Coffey was born 19 Jul 1787 at Wilkes County, North Carolina to Reuben Coffey (1759-1842) and Mildred "Millie" Morris (1761-1842). She died 6 Sep 1861 at Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky. Joseph and Sarah (Coffey) Owens had at least the following children:

They had no children together, but Samuel fathered three children with a former slave named Martha Owens (b. abt 1842 in TN, not found after the 1870 census. Samuel, Elizabeth, Martha and the three children are living in Prairie, Carroll Co., Arkansas on the 1870 federal census. Samuel and Martha's children were:

c. Arkansas Owens, b. abt 1866 at Carroll Co., Arkansas

according to the notes of David H. Streets, an Owens genealogist, the three Owens children left Arkansas after 1885. "They had been left 40 acres of land in the will of Samuel W. Owens's widow Elizabeth in 1880, but records indicate they were cheated out of their inheritance by a man named W. H. Wood."
