Rector: Jacob 2

A Rector Genealogy

Much of this information from this page is taken from The Rectors of Wayne County, Kentucky, written by Clara Rector Barnes Smart, 1975, The Wayside Press, Charlottesville, Virginia. She appears to have used the following books from The Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies in Virginia, Inc. as her sources: The Germanna Record #4, 1963; and Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750, B. C. Holtsclaw, 1964. If you think this information is wrong, please send me a correction at the email below.

Jacob John Rector and Mary Ann Hitt

Jacob Rector was the son of Hans Jacob Rector and Anna Elizabeth Fischbach. He was born in August 1724 at what later became Fauquier Co., Virginia. His father died abt 1729, when Jacob was a young child. Jacob was married, probably in 1748, to Mary Ann Hitt. Jacob died in Grayson County, Virginia on 30 July 1810.

Mary Ann Hitt was the daughter of Peter Hitt and Elisabeth Otterbach, who were also original 1714 colonists to the Germanna Colony. She was born abt 1723 at Germantown, Fauqier Co., Virginia, and died 16 Nov 1813 at Grayson County, VA. According to Mrs. Smart's book, "They (Jacob and Mary Ann Rector) are buried about two miles east of the present day Delhart, Virginia."

There is some controversy about the Hitt family, surrounding Peter Hitt's lineage and marriage(s). To further complicate matters, Germanna Record, No. 1 has Mary Ann Hitt married to a Joel Martin. Mrs. Smart claims this is a mistake, and has Jacob Rector marrying Mary Ann Hitt. She offers evidence that in his will, Peter Hitt beqeathed his daughter Mary RECTOR a hundred acres of land. In addition, she says that in 1798, Jacob and Mary deeded land to their son, Bennit Rector, but they remained on the place as long as Jacob lived. There are a number of other references to deeds drawn on behalf of Jacob and Mary Rector, and she includes a copy of Jacob's 1810 will (probated in 1811). She also references Dr. Holtzclaw's efforts to clear up the accounts of Jacob Rector's children in his "Germanna Record No. 4, which was the sourcebook for her presentation of the material referenced above.
