James "Jimper" Sharp and Mary Polly Gibbons Smith

James "Jimper" Sharp was born on 15 Nov 1816 at Scott County, Tennessee to James "Jim" Sharp and Flemmon Means. Jimper was married twice. His first wife was Mollie Cox, by whom he had 3 sons. His second wife was Mary Polly Gibbons Smith and they were married in Campbell, Tennessee on 11 January 1846. Click here for a picture of Jimper Sharp. James Jimper Sharp died 10 May 1890 or 1893, and he is buried in the Winfield Cemetery, Winfield, Scott County, Tennessee along with his second wife. Click here for a picture of his house in Winfield, Scott County, Tennessee. It was later used as a hotel, called the Hines Hotel.

Mollie Cox was born abt 1818 at Campbell County, Tennessee to Abraham Cox and (unknown mother). She died about 1845.

Mary Polly Gibbons (Gibson?) Smith was born on 9 Aug 1821 at Kentucky to John Lampkin Smith (1794 - 1875) and Keziah "Kizzy" Gibson (1799 - 1864). Mary "Polly" Smith Sharp died on 24 Oct 1916 at Scott County, Tennessee. Jimper and Mary (Smith) Sharp had at least ten children. Click here for a picture of Mary

1. William Sharp, b. abt 1839

2. Nicholas Nick Michael Sharp, b. 15 Aug 1841 at Campbell Co., Tennessee; d. 17 Jun 1887 at Winfield, Scott Co., Tennessee; married Elizabeth Jane Hill (b. 9 Feb 1847; d. 5 Aug 1910). They had at least one child, Edna Sharp (1879-1934). His Find A Grave Memorial #24925948 has a lovely eulogy written by W. Stillwell.

3. Isaac Sharp, there is no Isaac Sharp living with the James and Mary Sharp family in Subdivision 17, Campbell Tennessee on the 1850 Federal Census, although William and Nicholas are living with them (along withh Kezia, Ewell, and George). It makes me wonder if Molly Cox Sharp died giving birth to Isaac and perhaps Isaac died, too?

4. Keziah "Kizzy or Kissie " Sharp, born at Scott County, Tennessee on 29 Sep 1846; d. 25 Jun 1901 at Winfield, Scoot Co, TN; married John G. Chitwood (b. abt 1847 to James Chitwood (1823-1880) and Elizabeth Thompson (1818-1880)). Kissie and John G. Chitwood are both buried in the Winfield Cemetery in Scott County, TN. They had at least the following children:

a. Mary E. Molly Chitwood, b. abt 1875 TN, d. 1953 OK), m. Barney William Mason (1876-1943), had at least three children: Harry (1901), Robert (1901-1956); Barney (1912)

b. James T. Chitwood (1876-1962)

c. William H. Chitwood (b. Mar 1878, d. abt 1930)

d. Robert E. Lee Chitwood (1881-1935).

5. Ewell Sharp, born at Anderson County (or Scott County) Tennessee on March 4, 1848. He married Luella Dobbs on either 3 October 1872 or 31 October 1872. Luella Dobbs was the daughter of Squire William "Bill" Dobbs, Sr. and Sarah "Sally" Burk. Luella Dobbs was born on 27 August 1853 in Wayne County, KY and she died on 1 September 1919 in Wayne County, KY. She's buried in the Blevins Cemetery at Langham (Langum?) Fork, Wayne County, KY. Ewell Sharp died June 18 or 19, 1927 from dropsy. He is also buried in the Blevins Cemetery at Langham Fork, Wayne County, Kentucky. 6. George Washington Sharp, born at Campbell Co., Tennesse in January 1850. He married Elizabeth Dagley on 23 Sept 1869. Elizabeth Dagley (or Digby?) was born in March 1852. They had at least the following children: Lewis F. Sharp (b. abt 1871); Sarah M. Sharp (1874-1926); Marietta Sharp (abt 1877); Digby Sharp (b. 29 May 1880); Cora E. Sharp (b. Jul 1883); and possibly an Ella Sharp b. abt 1888

7. John Sharp, born at Tennessee on 2 July 1852; he died 9 Mar 1907 and is buried in the Winfield Cemetery at Scott County, TN. He first married Leodicia Sharp (1858-1882) and had two children: Elbert Sharp (1876-1948) and George Walter Sharp (1878-1941). He later married Susan McGinnis and had another son named Oscar L. Sharp (1898-1967)

8. Emma Sharp, born at Winfield, Tennessee, about 1854?

9. Elizabeth "Betty" Sharp, born at Tennesse on 24 May 1855; she became the second wife of Henderson Coffey Dobbs (brother of Luella and Elizabeth Dobbs) on 15 December 1878 in Wayne County, KY. 10. Sterling G. Sharp, born on 16 Apr 1856, and he died 13 Aug 1916 at Winfield, Scott, Tennessee. On 13 Nov 1876 he married Delphia Pennington. Delphia was born in 16 Aug 1856 to Fielding Pennington J(1817-1867) and Sarah Elizabeth Chambers (1822-1904). Delphia died 8 Sept 1935 at Tennessee. They had at least the following children: Maude Sharp (b. abt 1879); Jennie Sharp (b. Feb 1886); Vet Edgar Sharp (1888-1966); Fred F. Sharp (1892-1977); Vadie Sharp (b. 1894- 1961); and Eugene Sharp (1896-1918)

11. Calvin M. Sharp, born at Winfield, Tennessee, 27 Jun 1860, died 4 May 1953 at Hamilton, Ohio - although he is buried at the Winfield Cemetery at Scott County, TN. Married twice: Sarah Chitwood (b. 24 Mar 1864; d. 5 Jan 1913) and Rosa Duncan (1867-1946). With Sarah Chitwood he had at least the following children: Harry Sharp (b. Mar 1882; d. 18 Dec 1951); Luther Sharp (b. Jun 1888); Frank H. Sharp (b. Sep 1890); Earnest James Sharp (b. 1 Oct 1897; d. 22 Nov 1975); John Artist Sharp (1900-1970); Lora L. Sharp (b. 24 Sep 1902); Dessie Hazle Sharp (b. 17 Jan 1904; d. 10 Sep 1908).

12. Redden Sharp, born at Winfield, Scott County, Tennessee 8 Oct 1862; married Elizabeth Dobbs (sister of Luella Dobbs and Henderson Coffey Dobbs on 16 October 1887; d. 4 May 1953 at Cincinnati, OH. Elizabeth Dobbs was born July 1865 to William Dobbs (1822-1901) and Sarah Elizabeth Burke (1827-1891). Elizabeth Dobbs Sharp died before 1910. They had at least the following children: William Edward Sharp (abt 1891); Eula Sharp (1892-1975); Oda Sharp (abt 1898); Allie Sharp (1900-1988)

13. James "Jimmy" L. Sharp, born at Winfield, Scott County, Tennessee on 22 May 1865, d. 6 Dec 1941 at Live Oak, Sutter Co., California. He married twice, first on 30 Sep 1900 to Emma L. Duncan (b. 13 Jan 1869 to Granville Cecil Duncan and Louisa Stanly; d. 7 Nov 1905 at LA, CA) with whom he had at least one child, Wynema Victoria Sharp (b. 13 Jun 1901 at TN, d. 19 Nov 1953 at San Mateo, CA. James L Sharp's second marriage was on 24 Oct 1908 to Katherine Kendrick Walcott (b. 16 Jan 1872 at Wayne Co., KY; d. 19 May 1941 at Butte Co., California).

14. Daughter (twin to James) born and died 22 May 1865 at Scott County, Tennessee; buried at Winfield Cemetery, Scott Co., Tennessee.
