MRS. FLORENCE E. DOTY

CRANFORD - Mrs. Florence E. Doty, 79, of San Pedro, Calif., formerly of this township, wife of the late Edward M. Doty, died Monday at her home.

Born in Elizabeth, she resided here at 3 Kensington Ave. for many years before moving to San Pedro nine years ago. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Elizabeth.

Mrs. Doty is survived by two sons, Milton S., Point Pleasant and John H., San Pedro; two daughters, Mrs. Howard Wesp, Garwood, and Mrs. James Rankin, Cranford; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. H. Floyd Walters, Cranford.

The services will be at Gray Memorial, 12 Springfield Ave.

Edward Doty resided in Poughkeepsie, New York from birth until his parents moved to Union, New Jersey in the spring of 1879. Available documents suggest that the family resided in Union, New Jersey until after 1890. At the time of his marriage in October 1893, he was residing in Elizabeth, New Jersey and working as an Express Driver. Between the taking of the 1895 NJ Census and the 1900 US Census, the family moved to Union, New Jersey. His occupation on the 1900 Census is still listed as Express Driver. The next US Census in 1910 shows the family living in Cranford, New Jersey and his occupation as Express Agent. An item in the October 12, 1911 edition of the Cranford Chronicle newspaper reads as follows: "The local express business of E.M. Doty, has been purchased by G.T. Robbins, former milkman. Mr. Doty will as heretofore act as U.S. Express Agent". The 1915 NJ Census gives his residence as Westfield, NJ and occupation as Expressman.

His World War I draft registration card, dated 12 September 1918, lists his occupation as Shipping Clerk for the George C. Moon Company of Garwood, NJ. His residence is listed as 754 Prospect Street, Westfield, NJ. He is described as being of medium height and build and having gray eyes and brown hair. That part of the physical description regarding his height is erroneous as he stood well over six feet tall.

Tradition indicates that the family lived in Daytona Beach, Florida in the early nineteen twenties for a short period of time. The family returned to New Jersey by 1924 and lived in Cranford where he worked as Custodian at the Grant and Cleveland Elementary Schools until his retirement.

In 1947 he moved with his wife to San Pedro, California where he resided until his death. He died in 1953 of pneumonia, a complication resulting from advanced stomach cancer.

The following Funeral Notice appeared in the September 29, 1953 edition of the San Pedro News-Pilot newspaper:

DOTY, Edward Milton, age 79, of 221 S. Palos Verdes, passed away yesterday at San Pedro Hospital. A native of New York, he has resided in San Pedro for six years. Remains will be forwarded by the H. R. HALVERSON MORTUARY to Cranford, N.J., for burial.
