JOHN MARTIN OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Fourth Generation

123. Zebulon4 SUTTON (Patience3 MARTIN, John2, John1) was born in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey September 1, 1707.(239)

He married Mary (--------) circa 1731 in Somerset County, New Jersey. Mary was born circa 1712.

Born in Piscataway, he moved to the Basking Ridge area of Somerset County where he leased in early 1747, from James Alexander, 130 acres of land bordering the Passaic River. Virtually all of the 800 acre Alexander estate was leased or purchased by he and his three brothers, Zacharias, John, and Daniel or John and Jonathan Doty who had come from Piscataway in 1739.

Edward F.H. Sutton in his "Genealogical Notes of the Sutton Family of New Jersey" speculates that Zebulon's wife Mary, who he married about 1731, was the daughter of Jonathan Doty. If Mary's surname was Doty, the daughter of James Doty and Phebe Slater, who's birth is recorded in Piscataway in 1713, would appear to be a likely candidate as well. I know of no evidence uncovered to date that substantiates either possibility. A publication of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (1996) entitled, MAYFLOWER FAMILIES THROUGH FIVE GENERATIONS, Volume 11, Part II, refering to Mary, daughter of James Doty, states "She was once thought to have married Zebulon Sutton; but no evidence of the marriage has been found, and it now appears unlikely to have occurred." Descendants of Zebulon Sutton are no longer believed to be descendants of Edward Doty of the Mayflower.

His date of death is not known. He may have been the Zebulon Sutton who was a pew holder at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church in 1783, although that person could well have been either a nephew or his grandson. Attempts continue to resolve the identity of his wife and to determine the date of his death.
