George Sutton10 WRIGHT (Olive J.9 DOTY, John H.8, Samuel S.7, Elizabeth6 SUTTON, Uriah5, Zebulon4, Patience3 MARTIN, John2, John1) was born in Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey December 3, 1895.(507) George died October 5, 1945 at 219 Locust Street in Roselle, Union County, New Jersey at 49 years of age.

He married Rose DECKER.

He was cremated October 8,1945 at Rosehill Crematory in Linden, Union County, New Jersey.

The following obituary appeared in the October 5, 1945 edition of the Elizabeth Daily Journal newspaper:

FIRE CHIEF WRIGHT DEAD AT ROSELLE

ROSELLE, Oct. 5. - Fire Chief George S. Wright, 49 years old, of 219 Locust street, died suddenly this morning of a heart attack at his home. He was one of the best known residents of the community and was particularly active in its official life. Mr Wright was born in Elizabeth but spent practically all of his life in this borough. He was educated and reared here and became established in business before he devoted all his efforts to fire fighting.

He was a veteran of World War I, in which he was twice wounded in action. He was inducted in Elizabeth April 2, 1918 and served with the Company A of the 311 Infantry. In the battle of St. Mihiel, France, he was wounded by shrapnel and gassed and subsequently received a bayonet wound in the thigh. He was honorably discharged from the service April 8, 1919 and, returning to Roselle, he became proprietor of the First Avenue Garage, which he subsequently conducted seventeen years.

Mr. Wright became a member of the Roselle Police Department January 16, 1920, rose to the rank of sergeant and on July 1, 1924 he also joined the Fire Department. In those days it was customary for police officers to also serve as fire fighters, as they were called upon to drive apparatus. He was elevated to second assistant chief of the Fire Department in January,1929, became the first assistant chief in January, 1930 and in January, 1933, was appointed by Mayor Francis V. Lowden to the chiefship. He is credited with serving the borough diligently through his terms of office. When the Van Court Inn was destroyed by fire he arose from a sick bed to direct his men.

Mr. Wright was a communicant of St. Luke's Episcopal Church here. He was a member of Wheatsheaf Lodge 272, F. & A. M. and of its Craftsmen's Club, a member of Unity Post 229, American Legion; of the Roselle Exempt Firemen's Association, of the Firemen's Mutual Benefit Association, Local 55; of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association and of the New Jersey State Paid Fire Chiefs Club. He was a charter member and a past president of the Roselle-Roselle Park Lions Club.

He leaves his wife, Rose Decker Wright; two sons, Ensign Richard A. Wright, in the Maritime Service, and George S. Wright, Jr., here; His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin S. Wright and a sister, Mrs. Carl Houghwort, on Staten Island. The body is at the Prall Funeral Home, 124 First avenue, east, at which services will be held Sunday night.
