JOHN MARTIN OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Second Generation

4. John2 MARTIN (John1) was born in Dover, New Hampshire circa 1650. John died 1703 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 53 years of age. He was interred 1703 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

He married twice. He married Dorothy SMITH June 26, 1677 in Piscataway, New Jersey.(29) Dorothy was born circa 1657. Dorothy was the daughter of Richard SMITH. Dorothy died March 28, 1698 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 40 years of age.(30) She was interred March 1697/8 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married Ann BROWN January 19, 1698/9 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.(31)

In "Genealogical Notes of the Sutton Family of New Jersey", Edward F.H. Sutton states that Patience Martin is the daughter of John Martin, one of the four Piscataway Land grantees, and his second wife Dorothy. Piscataway Town Records indicate that the elder John Martin was survived by his wife Esther and, therefore, could not have had a second wife.

His son John, who married Dorothy Smith in 1677, is the father of Patience. Six children, not including Patience, are attributed to John and Dorothy Martin between 1678 and 1694. Although Patience does not appear in the birth listings of the Town of Piscataway, her estimated birth date of 1684 would fit, without conflict, into this family group.

The will of John Martin (dated 21 May 1703, proved 18 April 1704), yeoman, of Piscataway mentions his second wife, Ann, and children, Elizabeth Dunn, Esther Martin, Dorothy Martin, John Martin (under age) and Richard Martin.

The Piscataway Town Records show two daughters named Esther, both of whom died young, followed by daughters Elizabeth and Dorothy and then sons John and Richard. The daughter, Esther, mentioned in his will does not appear in the town birth records. The will appears to mention the children in birth order, leading to the conclusion that the daughter he calls "Esther" is probably the "Patience Martin" who married the following year.

Until evidence to the contrary is found, I will assume that the Patience Martin, who married Daniel Sutton on 31 October 1704, is a member of this family.

John MARTIN and Dorothy SMITH had the following children:

child 31 i. Esther3 MARTIN was born in Piscataway, New Jersey February 8, 1677/8.(32) Esther died April 9, 1678 in Piscataway, New Jersey at less than one year of age.(33) She was interred April 1678 in Piscataway, New Jersey.

child 32 ii. Esther MARTIN was born in Piscataway, New Jersey April 11, 1679.(34) Esther died November 8, 1682 in Piscataway, New Jersey at 3 years of age.(35) She was interred November 1682 in Piscataway, New Jersey.
