THE
HARRIS FAMILY "James Harris, the
progenitor
of the New Jersey branch of the Harris family, was
born in
the city of Bristol, Sommersetshire, England, close to the
border of Wales, about the commencement of 1700; immigrated
to America in 1725 (or about that time); settled in
Essex
County, Colony of New Jersey, where he married a
woman by
the name of Boleyn, perhaps a granddaughter of Capt.
James
BOLLEN, who came to the Province Of the history of
James Harris,
before he came to America, but very little is
known,
he dying just at the period when the war cloud of the
American
Revolution was beginning to be visible above the
political
horizon. He is said to have been a man of considerable
force
of character for one of his humble condition in
life.
He was a merchant tailor by occupation, an
Episcopalian
in religion, and a Loyalist or I shall endeavor, if possible, to have the other branches of his family represented by some of the descendants of each branch." And so begins Mrs Sarah J.
(Harris) Keifer's book on the Harris family. Now,
I shall make my endeavor to bring the book up-to-date, add to the
earlier generations, and to correct any errors which it
may contain. 1. "Lyon Memorial" "Henry Lyon of Newark", 1907 2. See

and died 20 September 1841 at Woodburn, near
Cincinnati,
Ohio. As New Jersey was the battle ground of the American

and the Lyon's were of democratic principles,
James
Lyon inevitably took up arms against King George. A

A pension was allowed "for three years' actual service as an artificer in the New Jersey State Troops. Two years after he left the army, James Lyon married, 21 April 1782, Elizabeth WILLIAMS of Elizabethtown, N.J. She was born 18 May 1759, a daughter of Jonathan WILLIAMS and Joanna WILLIAMS. Tradition says that
Joanna

autocratical
disposition. They lived for a time in New York
City,
in Maiden Lane, and some of the children were born
there.
In 1791 James Lyon emigrated with his family to Hamilton
County,
Ohio and settled on Walnut Hills, in what is now
a part
of Cincinnati. Here he bought 1,000 acres of land of

James HARRIS who married a Miss BOLEYN Mr. Harris served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He belonged to what was called the Jersey minute men. At the commencement of the war the cities of Philadelphia and New York were occupied by strong British forces, and Jersey being a narrow strip situated between the two cities, was made the common foraging and plunder grounds from both points, and in order to repel their invasions and intercept their supplies and annoy them in any way, the men of Jersey who were liable to military duty, and were loyal to the patriotic cause, were enrolled into bands all through the Colony. They were not
required to remain
under arms except as emergency required.
They were
required to hold themselves ready at all times to
turn
out at a moments notice, and they have ever since been
known
as the Jersey minute men. Whenever the enemy made a raid
into
the territory, these minute men would rush to arms and
be
after them like fox hounds, and they captured many
prisoners
and many valuable convoys of Mr. Harris belonged
to these
minute men, and as such was in many skirmishes, raids
and
forages. It was on the occasion of the British attempting
to
cross from Philadelphia to New York through Jersey, with a
large
force, that these minute men so annoyed them and
impeded their
march that General Washington was enabled to
overtake them
at Monmouth, almost in sight of the spires of New
York, and
to achieve so great a victory. He was also at the bloody
battle
of Mon-mouth, where his [Rev. War pension #W19679] [DAR Patriots Index] He was a hand mason

the village
of Amity, in 1817, and is buried in the old
