                           Lemuel J. Westbrook

Lemuel J. Westbrook, one of this city's best known, most generally loved and respected citizens, died at his home, 348 East Main Street Tuesday morning at 2:10 after a long illiness.  Mr. Westbrook underwent a surgical operation some months ago and never fully recovered from it.  He spent most of his life in Newark (Ohio).

The deceased was age 62 years and leaves to mourn him the following children:  E.E., J.L., A.A., F.L., and N.B. Westbrook, all of this city.  Mrs Vertie M. Klecker and Miss Inez Westbrook, also of this city.  There are also the following brothers and sisters:  Mrs. D.A. Stewart of Hanover,  William Westbrook of Whipple, Ohio,  Samuel of Waverly, Ohio, Mrs. Rhoda Harmon, Woodsfield, Ohio, Job of Arkansas,  E.H. of Ira, Iowa,  John residing at St. Louisville, and Mrs. P.E. Boyd living in the stat of Wisconsn (actually Missouri).

The funeral services were held at the late home at 9 o'clock Thursday morning, the services being conducted by the Rev. T.W. Locke of the East Main Street M.E. Church.  Interment took place in the Barnes Cemetery near Wilkin's Run.

Mr. Westbrook came to Newark in 1862 from Belmont County where he was born and for the past several years has been engaged in the grocery business on east Main street near his home.  By his kindness and upright character he won a large number of friends, which fact assisted him not only socially but made him successful in business.

The funeral of Mrs. L. J. Westbrook, who died Thursday afternoon at 2:20 o'clock, at her home, No. 348 East Main Street, aged 49 years, of catarrh of the stomach, took place from the house  Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, Reverand H. Newton Miller officiating.  Burial at Cedar Hill.

Miss Alice Beckham was the daughter of the late Wm. Beckham of Fallsbury township.  In 1887 she was united in marriage to Mr. L.J. Westbrook, the East Main Street grocer, making Newark, Ohio their home.  Three children were born to them, Mary B., Guy J., and Inez G., aged 14, 12, and 10 years, respectively.  For the past six months Mrs. Westbrook  has been in poor health, suffering at first from the effects of vaccination, which finally developed into stomach trouble, death touching her heart Thursday.

Besides a husband and the children, she leaves six step sons and daughters; Eliza A., James L., Amzi A., Franklin L., and Wm. E. Westbrook, and Mrs. Verder Klicker, and seven sisters;  Mrs. James Larder, Mrs. Mary Ratten of West Carlisle, Mrs. James Crawford, Mrs. Emma Varner of Perryton,  Mrs. Eliza Johns of Leon and Mrs. Effie Marriott of this city and one brother, Wm. Beckham of Perryton.
